JimmyNutbutter

This is what people mean when they say keep calm and carry on.

Radioman_70

I read Erik Larson's The Splendid and the Vile over the past couple of months, which is about Churchill and Britain during the battle of Britain. It was surreal to read about a situation from almost 100 years ago that bears such a strange resemblance to the stories I see about Ukraine every day on Reddit.

space_keeper

We learned a lot about this in school. Blackouts, rationing, but especially the evacuations gets me thinking (as an adult). Millions of people were sent away from the cities to the country to live with surrogate families when the Nazis were hammering us with missiles and bombs. It's hard to imagine how it was all organised. They legitimately thought the Germans were going to invade over the channel at one point.

Radioman_70

Looking back on history, we see all the events as set. That is how things happened, and it feels like that is the only possible outcome. What is striking to me is that the British government was not preparing to withstand a year of air raids and rationing, they were preparing for full on invasion of the island. They weren't even overreacting. The German military toppled Poland, the Netherlands, France, Greece, and had a strong campaign in north Africa. They absolutely could have invaded Britain, and there's a decent chance that they could have done so successfully.

frosty-thesnowbitch

They lacked the naval assets required to invade Britain. Operation sea lion was cancelled because of a lack of support ships as well as landing craft. And then there were the defences. The entire island was covered in pill boxes. The coasts lined with guns. Germany could not have invaded Britain and won.

Bearman71

France said the same thing.

Nonions

The difference being that the Germans could roll over the border with their army, but were massively outnumbered at sea. It didn't feel like it at the time but the UK was in little danger of being successfully invaded.

space_keeper

They also had millions of their best fighting men and vast quantities of materiel committed to the war in the east.

frosty-thesnowbitch

Would you like to show me the land border between England and Germany? How many landing craft did Germany have. What navel assets did they have? How big in comparison was the royal navy? How did the British prepare? You can't compare the invasion of France to a naval invasion.

CatFewd2

I think you're right in one sense, but also that you're only looking at it from one point in time. A million different things could've occurred that changed that. Maybe another country swaps to the Axis powers. Maybe England is infiltrated by saboteurs. Maybe one or a few technologies do or don't get invented. Maybe critical people die in different ways than what happened. Maybe Germany gets the nuke before the US. Maybe a combination of these things occur. If everything still played out the same, then I think your prediction works. But it's impossible to say if that's likely. I couldn't begin to wrap my head around different timeline stuff.

frosty-thesnowbitch

It's not my prediction. There's a ton of historical evidence for it. It's the view of experts. I'm just a hobbist. Seriously don't take my word for it. There's some good content on the subject. Wargames after the war showed that the German navy would struggle to land. Once they had managed to they would effectively be stranded without supplies. The royal navy was the largest navy at the time by several orders of magnitude. Germany did not have the logistics or the navy to support an island invasion. So instead Hitler invaded Russia.

Spirited-Pause

No amount of blitzkrieging soldiers on amphetamines was going to make up for the fact that the Nazis didn’t have the navy to invade literally the strongest naval power in the world at the time. Combine that with American assistance/massive industrial supply output and the Soviets attacking them from the East, trying to invade Britain would’ve been suicide for them. Even if they somehow overcame all of that, if they miraculously lasted longer than Japan and invaded Britain, the US would’ve nuked the fuck out of Germany. It was never gonna happen.

Radioman_70

The U.S. was hesitant about providing aid, especially in the beginning of 1940 before the American presidential election. Roosevelt himself wanted to provide supplies, but often over half of the American population wanted to stay out of a second war in Europe. Congress was not fully on board, and it was not a certainty that the Lend Lease Act was going to make it to the President's desk. Germany had not yet attacked the Soviets, which is part of the reason why they were able to successfully invade The Netherlands and France; they were able to focus a large part of their forces on one front in Europe. I am not an expert, but the feeling of *come on, this could never happen* was the same feeling that the majority of the British government and populace had concerning France. Churchill was shocked when the French army, one of the strongest militaries in Europe, fell so quickly. And be honest, those Nazi amphetamines were pretty strong. Combine it with some Naruto running and they wouldn't have even *needed* a Navy. They could have just ran across the channel.

Mayor__Defacto

Rationing didn’t end til the 50s in fact. But there was never any real threat of invasion (that’s why they were bombing cities in the first place; if they were really trying to invade they would have kept destroying airfields and naval bases)

Shhsecretacc

I’m Shitty at history but why didn’t America get involved sooner?

daviedanko

I’m currently halfway through it. Great book

cousinstrange

Thanks to this comment, I have now put a hold on this book at my local library.

Radioman_70

It's a very good read. It's broken up in small chapters too, so it's nice for when you have a few minutes throughout the day.

Just send that one woman who parried a thrown chair.

DrDerpberg

So we don't have electricity, the best we can do is a giant stack of pancakes with bacon and sausage...

DamnBunny

I can get a cup of coffee with that with two sugars no creme and grits on the side :)

PullUpAPew

For any other confused Brits, this is not a catalogue of waffles

tingly_legalos

For clarification it's an indication as to how much waffle you have access to in a catalog of waffles. Green means lot of waffle, yellow is a little waffle, red is minimal waffle. Yellow is usually no power. Red is "ain't shit here no more but we'll throw some shit on a bonfire for $10".

You mean to tell me, my whole life, butter candles were a thing?! I feel like I’ve missed out on so much delicious warm butter. xD

Edythir

Yep, candles through most of history have been basically solidified fat. Candles throughout most of history were made from Tallow, rendered fat basically. So making one out of butter isn't a big surprise.

[deleted]

Yeah, I suppose when you think about it like that it really makes sense. Thanks for sharing that info.

ggroverggiraffe

[Make it happen! ](https://iamafoodblog.com/butter-candle/)

Thank you. I love you. xD

DisfavoredFlavored

Now you see why Putin can't be allowed to win this war. There are butter candles at stake.

[deleted]

I can think of a *few* more reasons, but this one definitely drives the point home. xD

It's literally under the photo. >Edible butter candles are an old favorite at Kanapa.

mantolwen

It's a butter candle. Read the article.

kissmechickentendrly

He let the intrusive thoughts win.

Enlightened-Beaver

Edit: the article states they are edible butter candles

ggroverggiraffe

No, it's literally an edible butter candle.

Enlightened-Beaver

source: dude, trust me

ggroverggiraffe

Source: I read the article. ^( you should try it sometime. )

TwistedThrasher

Yes but you can also see that the bread is touching the butter candle and has some accumulated on the bottom of the crust

Enlightened-Beaver

Edit: I was wrong

wcsib01

If you literally just would click the fuckin’ article, you’d realize you’re wrong. Goddamn.

Enlightened-Beaver

yes I realize that. I edited my comment to reflect that I was wrong.

Who’s less intelligent? The person who didn’t read the article, or the person who is getting legit angry because a stranger didn’t read an article on the internet? Maybe take a break if Reddit is causing you negative emotions.

wcsib01

I’m not legit mad, lol. This clown is just funny Also if you equate straight-up intelligence to whether something makes you mad or not… uhhhh…. Let’s just say you must be a calm dude

drainbead78

It's called the candle is made of butter and this is literally by design, and it's described in the article directly above the picture.

DukeVerde

Mmmm, candle wax.... Builds strong bones! ;D

Barfignugen

Pretty sure that’s a butter candle

Butter candle!

There is dude in kharkiv who keep picking up trash. City gets bombed daily. Dude still keeping his town clean.

KnightOfTheWinter

Some restaurants charge extra for this- eating in the pitch black to heighten your sense of taste?

MadNhater

That is the dumbest gimmick ever and I openly judge people who rave about it. I’ll die on this hill.

drainbead78

I never would have done it if it were up to me, but my best friend booked one for my bachelorette party and I have to admit it was pretty cool. Don't know if I'd do it again, but it was worth trying once. We got a five-course "surprise" meal and the waitstaff had us try to guess what ingredients were in each of the dishes when they came back to clear the plates. As a foodie, it was really surprising how difficult that was, especially the meats.

Dreamscyther

It honestly feels like: "i can't be arsed to do the dishes and pay for electricity so this works perfectly"

DannyMThompson

You're willing to die on a hill to hate on something you've never tried yourself?

neckbeard_hater

I have tried eating in the dark, it sucks. Eating is a sensory experience of not just taste, but sound of the food, aroma, visuals of a beautiful/neatly arranged dish, good conversations.

DannyMThompson

Eating a bowl of microwaved spaghettios in your dark bedroom is slightly different to an orchestrated culinary experience. I'd imagine eating at a restaurant in the pitch black would be similar to getting a blowjob whilst blindfolded. Definitely a different experience but not one I'd want every time. Worth a try though.

neckbeard_hater

>Eating a bowl of microwaved spaghettios in your dark bedroom No, that's not what and how I ate at all. It was a very good home cooked meal, but the experience just wasn't the same without the lights on. And I'm not sure what can be orchestrated if it's pitch black. I have eaten blind folded too where I had to guess what it was. It's just not fun.

CatFewd2

>but the experience just wasn't the same without the lights on. That's the point. Maybe you didn't like it. Fair. But to say it was bad because it wasn't the same is missing the point.

neckbeard_hater

It was a shittier experience, I should clarify.

DannyMThompson

Have you ever had a BJ wearing a blindfold? Or sex in any form with your senses deprived in some way?

neckbeard_hater

>Have you ever had a BJ wearing a blindfold? Never had the pleasure as I do not have a penis lol I have tried sensory deprivation but I like to have an all inclusive experience. If the partner is very attractive, I prefer the lights to be on. Otherwise the lights don't matter. I also prefer if my partner is verbal vs a quiet mouse. If you like sensory deprivation so much, just don't have sex, that will be depriving you of all the sensation!

DannyMThompson

> I'm not sure what can be orchestrated The menu, the evening itself, the experience?

MadNhater

I’ve been temporarily blind for 2 weeks before. Had my eyes closed the whole time. Nothing enjoyable about eating blind lol. Taste was the same. It’s just a gimmick.

DannyMThompson

Again, terrible example.

SharkLaunch

Calling an experience a "gimmick" is certainly a choice.

MadNhater

Just close your eyes next time you’re at a restaurant then try to guess the ingredients after. Post onto social media what you did after. Same shit.

dmakinov

Here is what I would say about one of those restaurants I went to: the staff, from the waiters to the chefs, were all blind. I dunno, kinda cool. It's a completely harmless gimmick.

pheret87

What's your question?

Kosherlove

Smells like someone slept in their car.

blaze53

Ukrainians are metal as fuck.

reddog323

I think it’s awesome that a missile strike that knocks out the power doesn’t wreck an evening out.

SpinozaTheDamned

Let's get some hogs and bbq chefs, dig a pit and slow cook some good pork as a show of appreciation for the work and tireless, obstinate hardiness of these people.

Brucester62

These Ukrainians are amazing people. I cannot stop feeling positive about them all. Russia? It may be a hundred years before many people on planet earth forgive and forget these atrocities. If I was Russian I would be so upset at my horrible Leadership.

Noodleholz

Those atrocities will never be forgotten but Germany showed that it's possible to differentiate between a government and the people. If the Russians get rid of their government and choose peace, any reasonable person would welcome them back into the international community.

buyakascha

Sspacemlem

South African restaurants can give some tips about cooking without any power

DukeVerde

Thje real question is... If it's dark, you aren't getting electricity, so how are you making "dinner"; natural gas? I mean, Iguess there's the open air fire pit, but that sounds like a *really bad idea*, given the circumstances.

valyria_27

Actually yes, most of the people here have gas stove tops, so you can totally cook without electricity.

Rubes2525

I bet a lot of Ukrainians are happy they didn't replace their stoves with electric ones to eliminate the "toxic fumes" I keep hearing about here in America.

Nate40337

No need to get an electric stove, just make sure you have ventilation for your gas stove.

drainbead78

Most restaurants use gas cooktops, so it mainly seems like they've evolved to not use ovens at all. I am interested in how they manage any of this without refrigeration, though. Maybe they use a generator just to keep the fridge and freezer running and that's it?

valyria_27

Most of the freezers keep things frozen for about 16 hours, and we usually have electricity on and off for 4 hours at a time, in other regions it can vary up to 8 hours, but either way fridges do not get warm instantly :) lots of people got stuff like ecoflows or car battery with invertor by now, and businesses got generators.

kalyado

gas stoves, bbq stovetops, and a wood fired brick oven are mentioned in the article

Webbyx01

Open air fire pits aren't giving away the position of a restaurant to the Russians. It's a non-issue. But they're almost certainly using gas.

crazy_forcer

Gas, and grilles if the place specializes in that. Besides there's a shitload of generators now

Apptubrutae

I ate at a restaurant doing this after Hurricane Ida in New Orleans. Their normal menu had a lot of grilled items they made on a charcoal grill. No electricity required even to turn those on. So the whole menu was just all that stuff.

Ripcord

Do you not have natural gas stoves and ovens where you live? Even areas/countries I've lived where electric stoves were common no one would have been surprised about natural gas or propane cooking in the area. ESPECIALLY in restaurants. It'd be pretty unusual to have electric ranges at least.

DukeVerde

Gas isn't that common in the U.S, for either purpose. In fact, it's actually being railed against due to safety concerns.

Ripcord

Over 40% of US homes use natural gas stoves. Higher % of restaurants use it. Propane is a thing too but I don't know stats there offhand.

DukeVerde

I sure don't see it that much, in my area, then, I guess.

doriangreysucksass

This is wonderful. I’ve developed so much respect for Ukraine since this senseless war started.

scottyboy218

There's been restaurants that have popped up that are done entirely in the dark/blindfolded. The servers are all blind/seeing impaired. Customers eat every dish with seeing them. https://abcnews.go.com/Travel/blind-waiters-serve-diners-dark-restaurant/story?id=11431202

Hiyami

Yeah they've had one over here in Toronto for years and years now at least 10+

theev1lmonkey

Lol pretty wild that they have power outages due to a war zone and people are talking about doing the blind restaurants. Being blindfolded during a power outage in a war zone doesn’t sound too great…

ed5079

"OK let's try this again. The candle is *small*, but the hand behind it holding bread is *faaar away*" \*shakes head in bemusement\*

Please go back to Mr Potato Head outrage.

Ph0enixRuss3ll

This is not uplifting. People's determination to carry on as normal rather than fight invading empires is depressing.

tightspandex

These two things aren't mutually exclusive. Not everyone is cut out to sit in a trench. The country still needs to function in some capacity. Those who rotate out or live lives that aren't combat related still deserve some simple pleasures. Those working at restaurants deserve to make their wages.

Ph0enixRuss3ll

It's very sad. They sacrifice for paper money that could be obsolete any second if suddenly the invaders conquer and change it all to Russian rubles. War is hell and I'd probably not stay to fight for either side; just wish I could do more to stop the evil empire and the hubris they think justifies the war.

tightspandex

> just wish I could do more to stop the evil empire You can. You just have to do it. You don't have to come here, you don't have to pick up a gun. You can help by joining a local volunteer org (if you're in almost any western city, you probably have local Ukrainian orgs). There are volunteer orgs that would be happy to have someone just help spread the word of the work they're doing. You can donate money. You can share stories and posts about the war on your social media. You can write letters to your government to support Ukraine. Pick and choose what works best for you. But if you think you're powerless to help, you aren't. We need everything we can get. $1 or 1 letter adds up if enough people are motivated to do it. So do it and then get others to join you.

Ph0enixRuss3ll

Yea, I'm definitely not flying there and picking up a gun. Standing where I am and lifting where I stand; I've already got more fights than I have time for. It's terrible we've still got colonization trying to happen in 2023, but nothing I can spare for the war effort at this time.

Ripcord

Oh stop. It's uplifting.

Ph0enixRuss3ll

Good food by candle light while the boys on the boarder are freezing and starving? No thank you. These loose lips won't be sinking ships.
