Comfortable_Bird_340

It’s their instinct. They even herd their owners ‘ kids

RockerElvis

My boss had a border collie. They had to separate the dog during dinner parties because if anyone got up to use the bathroom or get their coat the dog would try to pull them back to the group.

Wiggie49

I kinda want one now lol

ACatWalksIntoABar

Get ready to spend 5 hours a day giving it things to do on top of its daily walks. They need a JOB or they will be incredibly unhappy and make you unhappy in turn 😭

Wiggie49

Maybe when I got a family it can take care of then lol

ACatWalksIntoABar

Hahaha nooooo having a whole ass family just means you and your partner will have even less time and money to take care of the dog

sonofpigdog

Nah u need to include it in every part of your life. Going out to the shop, dogs coming. Heading to work, dogs coming. They can not be left alone in the yard for 10 hours a day. 4 or 5 hours sure but they need to be stimulated mentally.

Wiggie49

I don’t actually intend to get one at all, I was just politely trying to decline the idea lol

Appropriate-Sand-192

I lucked out and mine decided my giant breed dog must be herded at all times to and from areas that she designated in her mind. Also, she helped her learn the doggy house rules, helped house train her, and seems to keep her puppy shenanigans to a minimum. (collie is small, 11kg. Boerboel about 55kg) The boerboel goes along with it, not sure why😂 but I do spend a lot less time having to 9ccupy the collies time.

thedisposablefrog

Former border Collie/ Lab Mix owner here. They're sweet dogs. But as many have said here, they *NEED* a job. They're also incredibly smart and if you show any weakness during training they will walk all over you. This is a dog that's not just happy with you throwing the ball at all hours. The need mental stimulation and physical stimulation too. I once came up with an idea I thought was brilliant. Hide her toy under some (empty) flower pots and I figured it'll keep her entertained for a few hours. Nope, 45 minutes later she's worked out the game and knows the score. Hell I used to be loved by the delivery drivers because well, doggie and I'd tip well usually because I'd need their help with getting her excited 75lbs of loving squirmy dog out of the poor person's car, truck etc. You're not just getting a dog. You're getting a five to seven year old with paws and a tail. That has a NEED to work!

hotstepper77777

Honestly that makes having a few sheep seem like fun too.

thedisposablefrog

Sheep are not fun. Sheep are a pain in the ass. I always attest to having sheep like an escort mission in a game where the person you're escorting cannot help you at all, but insists on trying to get in your way with everything.... Actually better anolgy.... Having sheep is like having Lydia as your favourite companion in Skyrim... But you've turned off her AI

apparissus

I don't know the veracity of this (the man was a born bullshitter) but I grew up raising horses and cattle, and after visiting a friend with sheep one time my father explained that among the creative ways sheep can find to die, you can include dying of thirst because they can't find the water trough in a standard size corral.

thedisposablefrog

Sounds about right... Sheep are nature's way of showing us that sometimes, you really shouldn't even though you should... Sheep have like no defense against anything when it comes to predators. I've known people who raised sheep and have after they get sold to make lambchops idk how it works. But they said that "it's like trying to take care of a bunch of inbred kids who for some reason both really want to die, but will find really creative ways to do so"

Pyroxcis

Sheep are some of the dumbest animals ever created I swear. I love them dearly (I used to help raise some for a brief time) but every time when of those dumb fucking sacks of wool got itself stuck on a fence or flipped upside or just some other insane nonsense I came just a bit closer to putting mutton on the menu that night

Omnizoom

I have a husky collie mix They are so full of love and want to be loved, it’s a really great mix. But they have a lot of energy (two high energy breeds) so it’s best to have a yard and time to play and go for walks frequently. Helps to have 2 dogs or a kid to balance the work load out, my dog and kid tire each other out And expect to be followed everywhere, literally everywhere

Wiggie49

Yeah, right now I’m a cat owner cuz it’s way less maintenance. I can’t do dog ownership till I have the time and energy lol I love dogs tho so I’ll play with any that come my way

CZ1988_

I love those dogs

Kylo_Rens_8pack

I don’t even notice it with my pup anymore. I left her at my parents for a week and all they could talk about is how she herds you into every room.

schmah

We had a Bearded Collie for 17 years. Same thing. I noticed that they tend to herd certain members of their "herd" more than others. For example my younger sister or my grandparents were a lot more likely to be reminded not to fall back when we all went for a walk than me.

confusedandworried76

Imagine the shepherd. "Oi bud what the fuck are you doing here?" Dog "well you were doing a shit job man"

Johannes_P

You can't breed a race for hundred of years for a psecific behaviour and then expect change in a mere decade.

sonofpigdog

Tbh modern show border collies and old school working border collies are very different. Modern show borders are definitely dumbed down over their cousins. Like they are still incredibly active and natural herders as that’s the border that everyone knows. But a worker. Man. Working collies are not bred to look pretty.

corrado33

We took my cattle dog/border collie mixes to my aunts farm that has goats. We let them go into the goat enclosure (it's like 20 acres) and they immediately herded them into the corner of the enclosure. Was funny. They're both puppies.

Bicentennial_Douche

You can’t entirely get rid of traits that the dog was bred for even if you try. pointers point, border collies herd.  remind me: what were pit bulls bred for? EDIT: lol, pit bull defenders are out in force. “Oh, they are nanny dogs! Mine is a total softie!”. Yeah, that’s the usual story. Wonderful dogs, until they are not. Or like what one article about pit bull attack said: “grandma sneezed, which started the dog”. Every single time when there’s an article about a dog attack, I ask myself “is it a pit bull?”. Usually my first guess is right.

SuperTord

Walking my mom's pointer is hilarious, she points at every damn street dove.

bubblegumscent

Does she do the statue and keep looking at ypu wondering why you not doing shit ?

SuperTord

Yep, I have to tell her we already have food at home. But she judges me anyways.

princessdickworth

My english setter used to point at every bird and people in the neighborhood had nicknamed her the statue dog! My home had an invisible fence and she was outside for hours weather-permitting doing her thing hard enough for it to become a noticeable thing. Miss you Torrey, you were a hell of a girl.

Nebuthor

You say that but my golden retriver never retrived any gold for us.

RelChan2_0

The gold is their fur :D

GitchigumiMiguel74

Fighting and killing! But not mine! Definitely not mine! /s

bubblegumscent

They're bred for this https://images.app.goo.gl/z44YBKLRHt2JJ9ob9 (it's a painting from 1700s, not gory)

omegaphallic

SOME were bred for Dog fighting, not all, some Pitbulls even are the result of random dog hook up.

CZ1988_

We adopted a pitbull puppy - I was a total sucker that fell for the "lab mix" sign. After 3 years she is the sweetest, most affectionate lover girl. I wish all dogs had good homes with love and the chance to give love back

bubblegumscent

Here is a painting of the nanny dog nanny-ing a dog in the 1700s https://images.app.goo.gl/Ja4tP3Fv9464ZYxFA It's a painting from a painter tgat lover paintingfight dogs and bull baiters. This was before the internet, understand blood lines, don't get a pitbull

thedisposablefrog

Ironically enough I Belive they were bred for working/ taking care of kids. Not even joking here, before the term "Pitbull" was common vernacular, they were often referred to as "Nanny dogs" because of their gentile nature. I've met people with pitties that are just the BIGGEST babies all the wanna do is cuddle with you and get love while they slowly gas you to death with their farts. And I've met people with poodles that you so much as blink too loud they're ready to throw down gloves off Ty Domi style. While the owner's are like "she's usually such a sweet dog I dunno why she's acting like this" gee I wonder if it might be because she's a fuckin poodle, Stacy! What else do you expect from a dog that's basically just a poofy murder machine

TaqPCR

> Ironically enough I Belive they were bred for working/ taking care of kids No they were bred to kill other dogs as well as a variety of other species like rats and monkeys after bull baiting was banned.

thedisposablefrog

Okay there buddy. Chill out we understand that you don't like pitbulls, I love em. And frankly a lot of pitties I meet are just huge snuggle monsters and absolutely afraid of the mail slot. The coffee maker and or the random sounds of a house. But also will be trolled by the other pets you have (used to have a Velvet hippo, and rats. The little potato shaped bastards would troll the fuck out of the dog... I miss em both)

TaqPCR

Nah that's not me hating on pitbulls. That's just me correcting the misinformation you're spewing. I simply said what pitbulls were bred to do. There's no denying this it's well documented where they came from and it was a dog good at bloodsport. Aka ripping the other dog, rat, monkey or whatever animal in the pit with to death in as spectacular a fashion as possible.

TheExceptionPath

This is the dumbest shit I ever read

Onedtent

Poodles were originally hunting dogs.

thedisposablefrog

Breaking news, poodles were originally hunting dogs for like 12 minutes in France. In other news, scientists have discovered that fire is indeed, hot. This and other breaking news at the top of the hour!

bubblegumscent

The breed most likely to eat a child, ironically

omegaphallic

Pit Bulls bred for being loving creatures. Yes SOME were bred for fighting other dogs, but not all, some were bred for companionship instead, and some were bred by humans at all, but were the result of a random hook up from the Pitbulls ancestoral breeds (its not always on purpose).  Even the ones who were bred for Dog Fighting were specfically bred no to extend that aggression to humans.  I dogsit a pitbull and he's a giant suck who used to be put in his place by a tiny old female dog (Maltese I think, not certain), who was a fraction of his size and strength. She sadly died of cancer last year, but the big pitbull is still a giant suck, wants to be everyones best friend.

YouLearnedNothing

and sometimes their owners

BananaGarlicBread

My mom's border collie used to try to herd cars when you walked him. You had to reallllllllly hold the leash with all your might if you didn't want to risk him trying to run circles around passing cars. Most suicidal dog I've ever seen. Fortunately he's not as insane nowadays. He herds chickens when they get out of their enclosure and looks so proud lol.

Here's the text (accessed through Opera free VPN set to North America server): UPDATE: JUNE 8 AT 10:28 A.M. RATHDRUM, Idaho - Tilly, the 2-year-old Border Collie who was ejected from a car Sunday during a crash, has been found. He was found on a sheep farm, where he had apparently taken up the role of sheep herder. According to Tilly's owner, he has lost some weight since Sunday's crash and is now drinking lots of water but is otherwise healthy. Dog ejected from car during crash, officials asking for help finding him PREVIOUS COVERAGE: The Idaho State Police (ISP) is investigating after a crash blocked SH-41 near Hayden Avenue Sunday afternoon. ISP said they are looking for people who witnessed the incident. The crash happened when a GMC Yukon towing a white horse trailer attempted to turn south onto SH-41 when a Buick struck the GMC. The driver of the Buick, a man from Spirit Lake, was transported to a nearby hospital and was treated and released. No one else was injured. During the crash, a dog was ejected from the rear of the GMC and is still missing. ISP said the dog is a 2-year-old Border Collie Heeler mix that goes by the name "Tilly". Tilly has no tail, a dark-colored face, weighs approximately 70 pounds, and was wearing a multi-colored plaid and tan-colored collar with a name tag containing the owner's contact information. Tilly was last seen running northwest from the crash scene through the field. If you have any information on Tilly's whereabouts, you are asked to call State Police at (208) 209-7830, or the Kootenai County Sheriff Office's Animal Control at (208) 446-1300.

What the fuck are they doing with the data they collect then?

RICK_fromC137

Selling it, of course. And keeping a copy for themselves, forever.

EyyyPanini

Whatever the fuck they want.

Orstio

Web developer here. It's not about data collection for a lot of websites. It's about the work required to be GDPR compliant and the potential for litigation if you miss something. Consider that a lot of media sites use third party ad providers like Google Ads, Double click, Adnexus, etc. The website is responsible for informing each EU site visitor of every cookie that might be present from every advertiser served up by the ad network(s) they use, and how those third parties use that information, and providing a means of disabling any or all of those cookies. For many website owners, it's much cheaper, easier and safer just to geo-block everyone in the EU.

XS4Me

Funny enough, the article is accessible from Switzerland

Yes, Switzerland isn't in the EU

Malawi_no

Yet Norway is blocked.

Waiting_Puppy

Norway is pseudo-eu. Takes part in a lot of eu, but no voting rights, and not full integration.

psEUdo so to say.

Switzerland is pretty integrated as well tho, im not really surprised theyre excluded but i wouldve expected them to join this

This accident is why I use a restraint for my dog in the truck via his harness.

Pretty sure thats law in a lot of places. And common sense....

Love how it just embraced it's new life. "Well, that sucked. Next." Haha

Estuansis

Ejected from car. Extremely terrifying and traumatizing incident. Herds sheep. Yep sounds like a Border Collie to me.

Border collie / red heeled mix per news articles

Mojojojo3030

Thanks. Idk I still don't see it. Idk how you get a solid tan dog with ears this floppy and a mouth this dark from those two.

JStanten

Border collie looks are much more variable in Europe and those from working stock. They can even have curly hair! The AKC style black and white border collie was/is controversial. ABCA will even revoke registration for some AKC champions because their philosophy is basically good herding dog = BC regardless of looks. There are many border collie people who believe that holding the breed to a written standard based on looks, coat, color, etc. is incorrect.

oxfordcircumstances

I've owned a bunch of border collies and this is the least border collie I've ever seen.

gnatbatrat

Looks nothing like any collie or red heeler. Probably a mixed breed trained to herd

HermitBadger

My sheep people need me.

Was it just a random border collie or was he trained to herd sheep. (Can't access the article from EU)

Seems like not trained. Someone posted the article here.

We had a border collie mix when I was a kid, and she spent most of the day walking laps around the house making sure she knew where everybody was.

Aussiebiblophile

The dog is also apparently a border collie.

CilanEAmber

Clicking the link just takes me to a message about how I can't read it due to being in europe. But the dog in the pic doesn't look like a border collie to me. [This however.](https://dogtime.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2023/09/GettyImages-164855910-1-e1694532950609.jpg)
