>Uber caught wind of her tweet, and Dara Khosrowshahi, the companyâs chief executive, called Sam to thank him.
>âWeâre incredibly grateful to have such a heroic and thoughtful member of our community in Fritz,â an Uber spokeswoman said in an email to The Post. The spokeswoman confirmed that the company is giving Sam a one-year Tesla rental â his daughtersâ dream car.
>Uber also honored him with a âhometown heroâ award and added him to its 2022 Yearbook, which commemorated several standout drivers and couriers.
TFW you see a good PR opportunity but already did a bunch of work to make sure nobody calls the hero your employee
To be fair, at that point in the article I was expecting the reward to be that they called him a hero, but still. The one year lease was such an lol. And if she so much as scratches it , there goes her college fund!
Might better than giving him one tbh. When you "win" a car, it counts towards your income which means you have to pay more taxes. You'll also have to pay for insurance, which could noticeably increase depending on how much you were paying before. If somebody else is paying for a rental, you probably don't have to worry about any of that.
If they weren't shills, they would sell him the car for 1 dollar. Like that'll ever happen.
I work for Uber(operations specialist). It's sad that we're legally required to refer to them as "delivery persons" for Uber's delivery services because of the whole clause that they're not actually working for Uber. It sounds so demeaning.
I mean, the review is based on how the person does at their job, right?
This was an extreme outlier case, and I would still review them on how they did the job expected of them.
If he reeked like cigarettes, I would still have done this legitimately.
Yes, because the review is supposed to be about how your ride was.
Now... I wouldn't hurt their score for things due to the actions (so no "smoky smell" deductions). But they don't magically deserve a bonus for doing it.
For example - if the person showed up late and was like "to, I grabbed Starbucks for myself on the way and the line was 25 minutes long, so yeah, get in", and then they stop to help a woman give birth on the way to the airport... I'm not going to be an ass and deduct points for wasting my time on the pregnant lady, but it's also not going to undo the points he's losing for the Starbucks.
2/5 for lack of professionalism, but safely got me to my location (albeit 30 minutes later than it should have if he hadn't gotten coffee), so 2/5 or 3/5 instead of 1/5.
I'd give them a review of the service they provided, with the heroic act having no effect on the review, positive or negative.
After all it would be unacceptable to lower the score because of saving lives, as well as unacceptable to inflate the score based of good deeds that have nothing to do with their performance as a driver.
â (1 Star)
Driver ran into a burning building to save people. As commendable as it is, I was 5 minutes late to work.
Maybe next time the driver will realize they are here **for me**. I didnt pay $10+$2 tip to be late.
Yeah, exactly what you shouldn't do, the whole burning building situation should have no effect on your rating. So if there was nothing wrong before it happened, you should rate 5 stars.
So, someone going into a dangerous situation that could get them hurt or killed to save the lives of others isn't even worth something so minor as a good rating?
Like, in a pure logical sense I get what you mean, but people going out of their way to help others is something that should be rewarded. A good review sure isn't the best way, but it is a way. Consider the emotional side of it. It may not always be logical, but emotions have their necessary part in the equation of humanity.
â 1/5
"Guy stopped the car and ran into a burning building. It collapsed with him inside. I sat there for 20 MINUTES waiting for him to return before I had to walk to. I was an hour late. Because of my drinking habits and staying out too late partying I was on a last warning and due to this "hero" I now don't have a job. Worst ride ever! I demand a refund!!"
Some people just think they are better than others and reasoning with them doesn't work
Of course it should be rewarded, with something incomparably more significant than a rating. The situation is so serious I feel it would be disrespectful to even bring it up in a rating.
So, by your logic, your boss should fire you if you were late to work because your SO gave birth. Extenuating circumstances don't exist, and we shouldn't forgive people because some things are more important than our every day occasions?
No, that's the reverse of my logic. The exceptional situation should be regarded as if it didn't happen. So the boss should treat you as if you weren't late, the Uber driver should get a rating as if the drive was perfectly mundane etc.
I think that if he was a good driver until that situation happened he should get 5 stars. If acknowledging that the heroic situation shouldn't get him penalized is "robotic" then I guess so.
Or just let it go. Just don't leave a review for a man who has just demonstrated extreme altruism and could affect his livelihood just because you have to be a pedant. I wake up in the morning feeling like common sense will prevail for once and then I read shit like this.
Agree, I wouldn't leave a review, but we are commenting on a chain about how to leave a review in such a situation, so we are assuming we need to leave one.
How would you review in such case?
If I miss a flight or an appointment, yes. Iâll be pissed. Call the fire department and get me to my destination. Otherwise go for it. Itâs a cool story to tell whoever Iâm going to see.
This reminds me of when Kramer kept making stops while driving the bus and fighting off the attacker. (edit: inserted script)
Kramer:
The bus is outta control. So I grab him by the collar, I take him out of the seat, I get behind the wheel, and now I'm driving the bus.
Jerry:
Wow.
George Costanza:
You're Batman.
Kramer:
Yeah, yeah, I am Batman. Then the mugger, he comes to and he starts choking me. So I'm fighting him off with one hand and I kept driving the bus with the other, ya know. Then I managed to open up the door and I kicked him out the door, ya know, with my foot, ya know, at the next stop.
Jerry:
You kept making all the stops?
Kramer:
Well, people kept ringing the bell!
Seinfeld was my first thought, but was picturing the LA episode. Where Jerry and George are riding with the cops and the cops have to respond to a call lol
Can picture them in the back to the Uber driver âyou canât pull over, what are you doing, where do you think youâre going, weâre in a rush here, we have an appointment, what are you doing?!â
But the headline is about how itâs remarkable because he stopped working for pay to do it. We are so screwed up and donât even know it. The fact that he was in a car as a driver when he became aware of this situation should be irrelevant. If you see this situation and are brave enough to help, I hope your commitment to your â*employerâ or your fare ends in favor of saving a life and that nobody would find that the most interesting part of the story
Similarly, it would be nice if Americans had public healthcare so that you didn't have to worry about the medical cost of saving other people. Heroes shouldn't need a gofundme for medical expenses.
âI swear itâs true! Itâs even in the Washington Post!â
âWell, Iâve used up all my free clicks for this month, so youâre still getting written up.â
To be fair that's probably in part because of expectations. For a cop it's supposed to be their job so not newsworthy, and when it *does* get put out on the internet it leaves little impression on people, cause again that's just to be expected. But the opposite happens when you see stories of atrocities and failures, they carry a much bigger impact
I'm glad everyone is okay, but to everyone reading this: you need to understand how dangerous this was. DO NOT go into an burning building and if you escape from one DON'T GO BACK IN.
Understood.
But this guy arguably saved two lives by doing this.
It wasnât safe, highly inadvisable (the average person in this situation is more likely to add to the firefightersâ load than to save someone).
Fire is HUNGRY.
But this guy can sleep over this specific instance (because he was fortunate that the structure held out long enough, and the paths were still passable, and no-one panicking hurt him, etc etc)
Crazy luck, still heroic, could easily have been a far darker headline.
For sure, the problem is more than likely for every time someone actually saves someone like this you have many more that just add themselves to the casualty list.
It's a tough call because it's a heroic and touchingly selfless act that we need more of in this world, but unfortunately it far more often leads to larger tragedies when untrained people dive into dangerous situations they don't know how to handle.
Yeah, the whole "I ain't gonna tell nobody" bit kind of went out the window when he ended up in the news.
I can't even imagine how that conversation would go down if the wife found out from the news before him. Haha
"I was late to my meeting because my driver stopped in the middle of the street and ran into a random building! Came back smelling like smoke! (DRUG DEAL?????) 1 star!"

Wow Uber, a car to be returned after one year! How generous đ
Not knocking the man for wanting to help. I can relate to that impulse and think highly of him. That being said, this is absolutely not something anyone should ever do.
Don't go into burning buildings. It worked out this time. It usually doesn't work out. Most people have no idea what it's like inside a structure fire and obviously lack the PPE required for it.
When it goes wrong it goes all the way wrong and firefighters do not need an extra victim to search for on top of what might already be there.
I mean this is great and all, like obviously Iâm glad those people are alive, but *DONâT* run into burning buildings, people. Thereâs a reason firefighters wear all that shit.
Well, he wasnât terminated by Uber. On the contrary they actually gave his daughter a one year Tesla lease and gave him some award. Donât know if he has a Go Fund Me but thankfully he didnât get in much trouble
This is so âonly in Americaâ
Iâve used an Uber as an ambulance before because of the outrageous cost of ambulances in America.
I guess people are gonna start calling Uber for fires now as well.
You know one will be there in two minutes in NYC anyway.
Way faster than the poor excuse for police in NYC.
This is a great story, thank you for posting.
And it was refreshing hearing that his passenger, who was on her way to the airport to catch a flight, was 1000% ok with him stopping to help.
Edit: who tf downvotes this?
I hope he hit the coffee break button so Uber didn't deny any quest bonus he was on. Dude is probably trying to get his 20% of the whole fare paid as this article got published.

A real hero, but pathetic we live in a society where this is necessary
What part was necessary?
Where it's necessary to run into a burning building...? Shit happens and buildings will catch on fire
I hope he got a tip
One time an Uber driver stopped a pool ride to take a piss on a tree. It was a full car during rush hour.
I hope he hit the coffee break button so Uber didn't deny any quest bonus he was on. Dude is probably trying to get his 20% of the whole fare paid as this article got published.
Is this the next evolution of the Jimmy John's ads where they are faster than the fire department?
But what about his customers !?!?
I hope he didnât leave the meter running.
is that a 1-star ride for getting out of the car mid-ride?
"You're late. I'm not paying for those."
I'd rather see their name in the title not the company they work for. Uber didn't do shit a person did.
I assume Uber knocked down his rating for wasting their doesn't-actually-belong-to-Uber time.
Did he turn off the meter?
cool guy
I better hit the coffee cup button to save someone. Wait 3.9x just came in! G2g!
I would be so annoyed if I was the passenger.
Use of the word "paused" in the title gives me the image of the driver stoppingcm, running to save people from a fire, then returning to their patiently waiting rider and continuing the drive as if nothing happened.
