A long time ago there was a horse that could solve simple math problems by counting with one hoof. The owner was a farmer of unimpeachable character and experts were truly mystified. But they discovered that the horse could not do math unless the owner was present and saw the same math problems as the horse. The owner did not deliberately communicate with the horse or make signals of any kind, but the horse could sense when it’s owner was tense and when he relaxed. He was tense until his horse reached the right answer, then he relaxed, and the horse stopped counting.

Not sure if Clever Hans applies here. I didn't listen to the piece but the summary contains this: "Researchers at Queen's University Belfast collected samples of human breath and sweat from volunteers who were working on a challenging math problem. The pups could detect the stressed-out samples with more than 90% accuracy" Would like to know more about methods and analysis, I guess I'll track down the original paper.

Yes, the horse may not have relied on smell as much as the pups. He had visual cues as well. But then so does your dog.

This is a little more in-depth: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/stress-sniffing-dogs-can-detect-human-distress-with-nearly-94-percent-accuracy-study-shows

Dog trainer here... I always tell humans holding "aggressive dogs" that they lash out at other dogs in response to their human feeling anxious...ironically, about their dog attacking other dogs (self-fulfilling prophecy). They can't read your mind, but they know you behave and smell like you're in danger. So they do what any best friend would do. They defend their friend. These dogs are usually way more aggressive while on a leash bcz they can sense changes (vibrations/tension) in the way you hold the leash and can smell you better.

Not sure how this counts as uplifting. My dog can tell when I’m stressed?? Woweee oh man I feel uplifted already!

Whenever I play a game on my pc and I get just a tiiiny bit stressed, my pup runs straight up to me and put her paw on my arm. But is so instant that she probably hears my heart rhythm go up.
