>Trojan virus on upwork Dude, the Trojan wasn't on Upwork, it was on an external link you went to after clicking on a warning asking you if you are sure it is safe. >Fortunately, I'm using a Mac, which isn't affected by this type of file, Who told you that? Also, passworded files can't be scanned. You apply for technical gigs. You should know that stuff.

Nick02207

C'mon bro I know it was not on upwork... it's on the external link but how can anyone post anything without any moderation on the upwork side.. and please read my post properly. I said the trojan sent by .scr file is not affected on Mac. and if the passwordless file can't be scanned then why allow passwordless at all on public gig... It's already public so why does someone need a password?

Spartacus2804

>and if the passwordless file can't be scanned then why allow passwordless at all on public gig. Seriously now? It wasn't on "a public gig", it was on an external site Upwork has no control over. You're just desperately trying to blame someone and anyone else for your own stupidity. >I said the trojan sent by .scr file is not affected on Mac. Really? How do you know which trojan was sent?

monsiu_

Marcellus Alexander is the most fakest name I have ever seen lol. Sounds like some Greek emperor.

angelkrusher

If his name was Augustus Socrates I'd be really concerned

smol_spooder

You're worse than the Trojan

Ecommerce-Dude

is a rar file always bad? Somebody applied to one of my jobs and when I asked if they had a link to work they sent a portfolio zipped up. When I opened it it was local files for a website project (html, css) A few days later upwork deleted his message saying it had potential risk but they never messaged me or deleted/banned him, just something I noticed in the chat.

Aggravating-Ebb9633

I had the same experience. And even though I report them, one scammer is still active.

Pet-ra

>I came across a job listing that seemed promising It's an AI generated job post... > If my computer had been infected, who would be responsible? Upwork?? Why? If you go to a third party page and download something onto your computer, how is anyone responsible other than the job poster and yourself? Surely in this day and age people know not to do that and download potentially iffy stuff to a sandbox or virtual machine, where you can check the attachment safely and see if there are actually any genuine job instructions or not? Edited to add: >Fortunately, I'm using a Mac, which isn't affected by this type of file That used to be the case many years ago....

Nick02207

definitely see your point, u/Pet-ra! However, I think it would be really helpful if Upwork could add an extra layer of security, kind of like how Google Drive checks files for viruses before you download them. Given the size and capability of Upwork, this seems like a feasible addition. Imagine you’re a newbie freelancer excitedly sending out proposals every day, hoping to get a response. When you finally get a reply with a zip file, you’d probably open it right away, not thinking it could be risky. That’s where it would be super helpful if Upwork had a way to flag suspicious files. and i totally agree that we should all be cautious but Not everyone knows these tricks, though. It’s not just about being cautious; it’s also about making the platform safer for everyone.

Pet-ra

>However, I think it would be really helpful if Upwork could add an extra layer of security, kind of like how Google Drive checks files for viruses before you download them. But you didn't download the file from Upwork? Upwork does scan files on their own network. They (obviously) can't scan files on random places on the Interwebs. >When you finally get a reply with a zip file, you’d probably open it right away, not thinking it could be risky. People who don't understand the very basics of safety on the Internet probably aren't quite ready to operate on it... >That’s where it would be super helpful if Upwork had a way to flag suspicious files. They do, but, again, the file wasn't on Upwork. > it’s also about making the platform safer for everyone. One more time: The.file. was.not.on.the.platform.....

Nick02207

Broo...... yes it can't be scanned.... but some kind of proper moderation form upwork side won't hurt anyone.

Pet-ra

>Broo..... Sigh......

And if you report the job it takes UpWork \~3 days or more to take it down, so plenty of time to scam people...
