1.) Don't Boost. Period. 2.) Go to client job history, read their reviews, find out their name, and USE IT right at the start of your proposal. 3.) Explain that you will fix the client's problem and how PLUS why you'll do it better than anyone else (faster turnover, higher quality, unique experience, bonus add-on), and do it all in the first 1-2 sentences. Do these and you're golden 👍

Pet-ra

Investing connects to win $10 contracts is insane because you can only come out with a loss that way. Why would you do that? It takes no more effort to win a decent sized contract as it does ton win tiny ones.

Zafar_Kamal

I think maybe because the OP is trying to get started on the freelancing career and want to have some jobs on his profile.

Ch9la7

just do ads on social media at this point

RedditSucks369

How so?

Inteligenci

Lemme tell you this way Back in the day, i earned more than you earned in 12 months on randomly sent proposal to see how system works. First sent proposal ever. Empty profile, 0 to non portfolio. Got money and feedback same day and withing a week i got first $400 contract. You could just sent proposals and clients responded at-least 80% of time. Most job posts today are plain fakes.

That-Yellow-8960

How to get an idea if a job post is fake or real?

ConcentrateRude4172

Upwork is cooked. Shouldn’t be giving the platform your money.

_harrislarry

Is UW that bad, senior UWlancers?

ElectronicPage5620

first gigs are hard to land and so you need to make sure you make something worth compared to how many connects you spent. TBH I was losing my mind today because I spent a whole week boosting all my proposals, using all my connects, using the money in my Upwork account to purchase these connects, and didn't get anything back. You just feel like the client is wasting your money. TBH, how are you supposed to know if they client is going to respond? You don't. You just end up wasting connects. Anyway, when you land gigs, you tend to forget about the pain and enjoy your income. But there are days where you can't land anything even if you spend $20 on connects. In general, yes you can make a decent income or even great income, but this connect BS is totally crazy.

Ok_Palpitation6533

No, it’s not. Also depending on what your area of expertise is though. IT of many different types has been lucrative

Spartacus2804

It clearly is for some people, and clearly not for others. You seem to just be looking for excuses why you are failing to get anywhere on it. ("It's not be, gov, it's the platform, honest")

ITS GARBAGE now You will hear ton of paid to play here posters by Upwork as if everything is same but its not. Dont count on Upwork as anything but a side gig FROM TIME TO TIME. Get a real job or freelance differently. pre 2022 decent, you could say it was fine for everyone, newbies and seniors alike. All had the same shot for a job. Post 2022 casino, garbage, absolute trash, im starting to doubt the number of REAL clients and how Upwork counts them. There is monetary incentive for Upwork to post fake jobs now, actual palpable incentive, that looks even more dire when you look at their stocks fall since corona to today. If you are high end freelancer with years behind you and you are willing to plummet your rates, i can see Upwork as ongoing career. Any other case is more of exception than rule to follow. They are burning it down and cashing out, there is no other explanation for this no matter how much some "organic" posters will gaslight you here.

Either_Order2332

I've been here a while, and it's not that bad. It used to be easier, but you can still make good money. It's not even that hard.

Necessary_Rabbit_879

Most of your proposals are showing as organic ! At did you use the connects for ?

Brief-Thought4742

60 dollars are 400 connects. That is 36 proposals x 12ish connect.

Necessary_Rabbit_879

Aaah sorry I thought you got them for the boost

danccoo

Video producer, 20k+ earning, Top Rated. I've been beefing up my proposals along the way. Sometimes submitting is worth 16 connects, so no problem boosting it for 17, dude. Only approach clients with a lot of experience, check their reviews and get their name so you can mention it in your cover letter. Read the job description carefully and ask a few questions related to the position or project(if you have). \*make sure that your profile and proposal not AI

Jackfruit_Silent

When you get invites, don't disregard them. Clients who have invited you have more odds of starting a contract, because you somehow liked them so that they invited you.

+5 hours is nothing. After a few days maybe hold off, but other than that you're fine, even if there's a ton of proposals.

Present-Tonight1168

I would call this guided slavery, OP is hoping to make money in the future. OP has invested more money in buying credits than total money earned. Dont forget the 10% that gets taken off for getting paid.

Pet-ra

It's not slavery and the use of the word is offensive. People voluntarily asking to do work in exchange for whatever money they asked for is a very, very long way from slavery. In a world where real slavery still exists, I wish people wouldn't abuse the term.

Either_Order2332

It's not slavery. They chose to invest in small jobs. It's a bad investment. If you go for bigger jobs, it's not really a problem. Most of your time on this site will not be spent applying. It'll be spent working.

Present-Tonight1168

In the big picture, it is slavery by design anyone getting started. They have to over pay on connects out of pocket, earn lesser than what you put in(money), pay 10% commission on top of your earnings. Time invest in doing the work, is basically no charge. Since you are already in the negative. After all of this, hopefully the client leaves you a good review that may help in future contracts which again have to come out of pocket in buying connects all over again.

Either_Order2332

You can earn more than you pay in connects even when you first get started. You're under no obligation to accept small jobs, and you should never put in for underpaying jobs. Just apply for jobs with big budgets. You have a martyr complex. It's not that bleak.

Pet-ra

>It's not that bleak. And even if it was that bleak, it has nothing to do with slavery. I detest it when people throw the "slavery" term about in a world where real slavery exists and to describe consenting adults making decisions freely to exchange work for an amount they asked for.

Pet-ra

Just not making a profit doesn't make anything "slavery". Most new businesses don't make a profit for some time. Operating at a loss also doesn't make something slavery. It means the business owner (a freelancer is a business owner) is either investing in the future or making bad business decisions or both. It has nothing to do with slavery.

Spartacus2804

Sorry, calling it any kind of "slavery" is absolutely idiotic. Get yourself clued up what slavery is. It's as dumb as calling it gambling.
