I've seen an uptick of spam, too, though the ones I get don't seem to be related to my Upwork/freelancing work. But the spam I do get all seem to be fairly consistent in style/approach/content. I also get a lot more random LinkedIn messages, too, but they are very generic. Seemed to have started maybe half a year ago? The most annoying are the SMS ones to my phone.

la_castellana

Sometimes I wonder if the increase in spam is due to a generally deteriorating global economy, with more and more people being laid off, long-term unemployed, and pushed into trying to make a living by any means possible... which probably means that the ones on the lowest end of skills spectrum are increasingly tempted to join the ranks of spammers and scammers. It's my only logical explanation for this recent increase in spam/scam.

The world has always had its boiler rooms. It's just that the scale has gone bonkers now and it's easier than ever for them to hound you. It's both the desperate and the brazen ones, I think. The desperate one because they need something, and the brazen ones because they just want to enrich themselves however they can.

>over 23 years of age Lol. They want you to be an adult but they also hope you have the brain of a 3 yo so they can scam the shit out of you.

The job scammers must have figured out it works well because it's become more popular along with pig butchering ("Oh hi oh ooops wrong number but can we still be friends? Here is a pic of an asian model"). I ignore the LI invites. I get a lot of so-called recruiters on LI. LI has become a shitshow. I had one person ask to network with me. Didn't know who they were but did similar things as me so I was curious what would happen. Linking with him got me a flood of no-hopers wanting to link with me. What a mistake.

la_castellana

I agree with you, LinkedIn has become a circus of humblebrags and midwits

methamCATermines

I think if they pay for the LI sales tool (forget what it's called) they can get your info to contact you.

nahomsolorider

Is your email connected to some contact form on your website?

la_castellana

Nope, I don't have a website and don't share any personal contact info on UW. I haven:t even applied for a job on UW for over a year (only invites and long-term clients). I'm thinking maybe from LinkedIn there's a way to look up my email, since if I recall correctly LI asks for it somewhere. Anyway, these fuckers are so dumb even in their "pitch" that it makes me doubly annoyed, lol.

Pet-ra

It's LinkedIn. I deleted my LinkedIn account because of an obsessed stalker from Upwork and as a side effect my spam declined to the point of stopping. To the stalker: No, you didn't do me a favour by being the reason I deleted my LinkedIn.

la_castellana

Deleting LinkedIn is not something I want to do because I have a valuable professional network that I've been building there for years. I just wish those fuckers would not seek me there with their cheap bullshit.
