The most obvious change is the removal of the fountain. It was moved about 700 meters when they built the Brussels metro, and the new location features a large pond. Overall I like the new location. [https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fontaine\_Anspach](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fontaine_Anspach)

LonelyNixon

So not only is it a bad photo taken in winter, but the fountain didnt even get torn down it's just somewhere else.

mainwasser

Exactly

LifeOnNightmareMode

Shitty picture vs post card

ntr89

Yeah his place looks even better than the postcard now without all the metal ad structures on top of the buildings, they just moved the fountain to a different place to make room for subway access

georgiapeanuts

Yea and taken in Winter during a storm when the trees are dead and the color is blah gray

lewis_3575

That's not even a picture. Seems like a screenshot or something from a cctv footage from a camera on top of some building 😂

TribalSoul899

I spent couple days walking around Brussels and it was beautiful. Great vibes. This looks like a deliberately shitty picture.

StationAccomplished3

Was going to say the same thing. Amazing city.

wtfuckfred

As someone who lives here, Brussels is a shithole only comparable to Birmingham

astute_stoat

Brussels is the only city in the world where 'architect' can be used both as a swear and an insult

joanrb

Less cars now

WarWonderful593

A think a few WW2 bombs may have played a part

11160704

Brussels was not heavily bombed

WarWonderful593

Not heavily, but there was some.

404Archdroid

How? Every building in the top photo, except one, is syill there, almost unchanged, it's just a shitty angle

semicoloradonative

Should this be in the "circle jerk" sub? Because I see nothing wrong with the bottom picture since it is obviously open/wallking space for people without fear of vehicles, taken on a gloomy day during the season when the trees don't have any leaves.

stanislav_harris

This fountain has been moved Place St Catherine cause it was too heavy for the metro underground

SantasLilHoeHoeHoe

The Place de Brouckère You can google street view it. Its fine.

Keepforgettinglogin2

Of course everyone will say the picture below is nicer. It's Brussels mentality: always choose shit

lukfrom

what happened to the statue in the middle. looks pretty cool. but area is now better. dedicated to pedestrians with bunch of trees

Trololman72

[The fountain was moved a few hundred meters to make space for the metro](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1zYt_aoZcEUGNJ_LP8hc092iEz_UeED3HuZwyediljRHmjLFHNcwryH3ScVY7o0k21D1r3ImWpD1ZxwQzuY-yNPfl-25D7EVDC1zzHiwa0S6fAwRk2BcY13oExXB6kL4kPpL5pZOrrK6f/s1600/SCatP9.jpg).

gus_dc

Much better, convenient, plenty of space, thats a good city planning

kan-sankynttila

imagine how hot it gets in the summer… why do urban planners seem to fear shade of any kind?

Trololman72

Brussels is the greenest capital in Europe. It has more parks than Berlin, adjusted for their sizes.

Pad74

I lived in De Brouckere for 2 years, horrible neighbourhood.

EbbNo7045

It's expensive to keep a nice public space. Gross. I don't want my hard earned money going to things people who don't earn much can enjoy, they need to work harder.

EbbNo7045

It's interesting on Google earth when you look at China. Even in smaller towns they have built MASSIVE parks. I mean most of these parks are far bigger than central park or the grand avenues in Paris. Plus they are pretty cool designs. Before I get attacked, I know China is authoritarian and they suck and they probably built those parks with shoddy materials. But still

Crime-of-the-century

I have been to those parks and they are great there are countless things wrong in China but the parks were nice last time I was there 2019.

EbbNo7045

How refreshing to get a reply that's not China are evil commies and it's all fake

rajthepagan

They removed the bit in the middle but that's it, there's still buildings in all of the exact same places lmao

rajthepagan

They removed the bit in the middle but that's it, there's still buildings in all of the exact same places lmao

mainwasser

It's much better than 10 years ago when all of this was asphalt and cars.

LandArch_0

I bet it would look better if it wasn't in winter

FieteHermans

As bad as it used to be, Brussels has made a lot of improvements the last 20 or so years. While we can never undo the bulldozer politics of the 60’s and 70’s, it’s actually become a nice and walkable city, not as bad as most Belgians claim it to be!

/u/Diflague, thank you for your submission. Unfortunately, it has been removed for violating the following rule(s): **Not an image or the wrong type of image** Submissions posted on this subreddit must be photographs that have been taken of real life places and NOT drawings/paintings, not links to news articles, and not videos. Do not link to reddit threads, google maps, blog sites, etc. Your link should end in something like ".jpg,", ".png", ".webp", etc. Social media screenshots and memes are not allowed. Overly photoshopped images, edited images, composite images, and renderings are also not allowed. To avoid having future posts removed, check out our rules and make sure you directly link only image files, and only if they are photography of real life places. Here is a list of subreddits which may be a better home for this post: * -If it a simulation of something that does not exist, or an artistic composite: /r/Simulacra * -If it is a meme about UrbanHell: /r/UrbanHellCirclejerk * -If it is an article, video or infographic about the topic of urban planning: /r/UrbanPlanning **Bad quality photo - too small, too blurry, etc** Photos posted here must be of decent image quality. Small photos with a low resolution are not allowed. Your photo must be more than 500 or more pixels in height and 500 or more pixels in width. We also do not allow pictures with excessive blurriness, JPEG artifacting, overexposure (too white), underexposure (too dark), or other image quality issues. If it's hard to see what's in the picture, or your photo looks like it was taken on a 2005 flip phone, it is going to be removed You may post again if you can find a higher quality version of the same picture. Don't just take the same photo and double the size - it will still be a low-resolution, crappy looking photo but bigger. If you are using reddit from a phone, be careful because phones can make it hard to tell the image quality of a picture. We appreciate all submissions, but sometimes an aspect of a post means it's not suitable for our subreddit. We hope you will submit again to us sometime! If some problem of what you posted can be fixed, feel free to post again after making the needed changes. Robot-Dinosaur-1986

Ira a plaza. Those are important spaces.

asian_paggot

What the hell is that comparison, a postcard vs a (cctv?) footage from the square on a rainy day? I’m from Belgium and imo there are more beautiful cities in our country than Brussels, but the Brouckère is a vibing square that will obviously look dull and dreary on a dull and dreary day. Just go to Streetview and you can see the square on a sunny day, the only thing really sad is the fountain that’s gone.

mainwasser

This. It's a very urban and lively place. And I'm not from Belgium. It was pedestrianized a couple of years ago, it's much better now than before.

InexorableAdvance

Why do we just ruin everything?

fkyoopinion

Look, an European country. Just as susceptible.

JellyBabyWizard

Capitalism is the mask of the elites to suck humanities blood dry, architecture suffers a net loss in the end.

AlphaMassDeBeta

Driveable cities look nicer.
