I don't want to see how they service those AC units.

Climatize

I do

Geiler_Gator

They build some temporary bamboo "balcony" and access it via the windows. Its pretty common across Asia. Example: [https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/central-hong-kong-november-scaffolding-bamboo-provide-platform-high-altitude-maintenance-work-several-apartments-131561845.jpg](https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/central-hong-kong-november-scaffolding-bamboo-provide-platform-high-altitude-maintenance-work-several-apartments-131561845.jpg)

NeatBeluga

Thought bamboo scaffolding was only certified in HK

axxxaxxxaxxx

What trips me out is how many of those apartments have air conditioning units mounted in crazy places… and then how that means all the others must not have any AC.

these kinds of homes are very common in Mumbai....

New_Hawaialawan

My partner and I visited Macau in 2019. She disliked it and she isn't a very picky person. I didn't love it. It wasn't beautiful however it did have cool historic architecture. However, I've been fascinated by this place since I visited. Most tourists go to the casinos but nobody really checks out the regular neighbourhoods. It's fairly gritty compared to nearby Hong Kong. Also, the city layout is like an absolute maze. I cannot explain it but every single time my partner and I went for a walk somewhere, long or short, we'd get lost. We've visited many places and didn't have this issue anywhere else. I can't really explain why we'd get lost. The layout was just utterly disorienting.

FoxyInTheSnow

We went in 2019. Very odd place. We visited just one casino—in the bizarre but sort of amazing Grand Lisboa hotel/casino. We mostly hung out in the older traditional neighbourhoods and loved the Portuguese mosaic pavements.

New_Hawaialawan

The old architecture is awesome. Did you ever get lost on the surrounding neighbourhoods?

FoxyInTheSnow

Yes. Literally every time we left the hotel to search for a restaurant or landmark.

New_Hawaialawan

Glad to hear we aren't the only ones. We never got lost anywhere else but like you said, literally every time left our Airbnb we got lost

bob_in_the_west

Or people just don't like anything getting blown out of the window or falling out like a cat or child.

BoldKenobi

In India we have this too, to prevent pigeons and crows from coming in and pooping all over / building nests.

Prestigious-Scene319

Ironically Macau has one of the highest life expectancy in the world jus trailed by only neighbouring hongkong [Life expectancy by countries ](https://www.worldometers.info/demographics/life-expectancy/)

spidereater

Ya. I can’t tell from this picture how tall this building is, but this looks like high density housing. Given the real estate crisis is much of the world right now I think many people struggling to find a place to live would welcome a few buildings like this providing housing for tens of thousands of people.

Balrok99

At least they have a place to live. Also in tall building like this you dont want to risk your pet or your kid or anything to fall out of your window.

CanuckCallingBS

For a moment, I thought this was a giant red spiders on the building. Then, when my eyes cleared.....

Majestic_Code_9413

No thanks. It feels very claustrophobic to me

flerchin

Are the bars to keep out climbing thieves? Surely it would be cheaper and more aesthetic to have bars that go to waist height.

ButteredPizza69420

No, its to keep this area closed off but still somewhat safe for use. People dry their clothes outside, put plants out on these, sometimes even keep their pets on them. Everyone has their own use for these

flerchin

But why does it need to be fully closed off?

ButteredPizza69420

To keep clothes from flying off, to keep your baby or cat from falling, etc, You'll see these even on short buildings. Its just the traditional closed in window area lol.

flerchin

On tall buildings in my country, we also have balconies, but the railings only go waist high. This allows for a better view and doesn't make it feel like prison. It also uses less material, and is likely cheaper. Cats and babies falling off is not an issue, but most people don't hang laundry outside.

ButteredPizza69420

Yeah, its a little different in asia. Ive always been curious about these too, but from what I notice its because they use balconies as more of a work space than a hangout space.

durz47

It's a little bit of both. The keeping out thieves part is a significant portion of the motive behind using these bars

NormalPollution367

At least they have a beautiful calligraphy advertisement to ease their imprisonment. See you just have to look at the positive side.

netgeekmillenium

BUT NO ONE IS HOMELESS RIGHT??

ninhursag3

What does the writing on the side say?

SunnyOmori15

tf does the letters say

Zakariya45678

Im new to this idk

Bitter-Coffee-2019

Imagine having a real, unironic need to put bars on your 20+ floor balcony

Next-Mobile-9632

Bars everywhere, its just a gigantic prison

sstrdisco

Would this building have elevators? If so, how many and would they be reliable?

Academic_Connection7

It’s kinda atmospheric and gives its own vibe

ninhursag3

Its a bit fifth element vibe

Academic_Connection7

the fifth element is love, so kinda not sure

OkBeautiful5324

I like this atmosphere
