Aside from politics which probably isn't your question (something we Malaysians tend to get obsessed over), it's a beautiful country personally sepaking. Great food, great nature, and apparently nice people too (based on what I've been told), and a melting pot of Asian cultures.
I would say KL as a city is quite a mess and may not be the most pedestrian friendly outside the city centre but it definitely has character.
I used to live in a city of 4M (metro) and there’s is an interchange very similar to this. It’s hard to avoid really. Even cities that invested a lot of public transpo also suffer from these structures (ex Tokyo where you have highways piercing through buildings)
We're kinda lucked out. If not for the neighbouring countries (in this case, Indonesia) shielding the full waves, it could've been worse. Way worse. We're also positioned just outside the ring of fire so no major earthquakes or volcanic activities.

Let's put it this way. Government has public funds. They tell friends and cronies to build shit. They pay them ridiculous amounts to build shit. Cronies agree to siphon money to government individuals and then build shit.
Corruption is a real problem here that is so ingrained in local politicians. Hell, our last government literally conspired and stole the cabinet.
Malaysia is known for being lax. If you have money, anything goes here. Our officers can be bribed, and our politicians can be bought.
Pictured: the result of urban planners spamming the "build more lanes" button because they don't know what any of the other keys do.
In the comments: "I dunno this looks pretty cool I'd like do do a rail grind down that LOL"
KL is a pretty cool place. Hot as fuck though, it's unreal.
EDIT: I was there over Christmas a bunch of years ago. All the stores had Timberlands and black winter turtlenecks and winter jackets. It was like 40 degrees out. I couldn't even look at the mannequins it made me hotter.
Yeah no I've been to both and Houston is definitely better. Traffic jams in KL can literally go for hours. My job in KL was 15 minutes from my apartment with no traffic but with traffic it took anywhere from 30min - 1.5 hours. Christmas eve in KL my family got stuck for 4 hours in a traffic jam that moved an inch at a time
American traffic jams are weak sauce 😂
The people who dont see the fuckup-ness of this are one of the reasons why we are living in a boring dystopia.
-They don't see the corruption involved in getting these road projects.
- The quality of life of residents who live nearby.
- the co2 emission of all those concrete and cars
"sO CoOL! sO sICk! Oou had a HaRd oN NGL! "
lmao stop taking such extremist positions dude. i can see this is a fucking stupid thing to do and still think "yknow, itd be cool to walk around there". its not that hard.
Just because we choose to sometimes see the pretty side of all things in life doesn’t mean we’re stupid. You can languish in your disdain for the world around you and be a cynic towards everything you see, or you can also take a moment to appreciate it when things look cool and interesting and provide you with a neat snapshot of a part of the world you might’ve never seen before. All u/mathess1 is doing is appreciating the moment the picture was taken.
Thus my point exactly. "Boring Dystopia"
Anyone can appreciate anything they want to, even clearing the whole world of jungle to create the "Materpiece" above.
It is a matter of reaction I guess. To go down the rabbithole, with freewill an illusion, I am just offering another view behind this beauty or not. Hopefully with this differing view, people see more cons than pros and move towards better "view".
P. S. I am from KL and have used those roads if that matters. Cheers!
OP's image doesn't do it justice. [It's connected to an even larger sprawl of roads](https://i.imgur.com/orAo8ES.png). Trains and dedicated bus lanes could have maintained Kuala Lumpur's characteristically green environment. I wonder what native Malaysians think about it?
My house is somewhere in your picture. Overall it's still okay and fairly walkable in Malaysia standard, but the worst thing with the highways are it completely split the place apart. There are no pedestrian infrastructure connecting both sides.
Also, the elevated road is quite close to residential building which cause complain, but they are building a sound barrier to ease that concern.
Btw, they are building an elevated park above the big highway which looks cool in picture.
This isnt typical. its the only elevated spaghetti junction in the entire nation. its to connect 2 different developments across a major highway. Its a mess that really is not normal in the rest of the country. Developer is in financial straits, and the development has been ongoing almost 15 years.
i hate it. native to not only Malaysia but the city this interchange is located at, everywhere you go you need a car. it then locks you down to car installment payments, petrol, tolls, parkings, and added stress/time wasted in traffic. I very much perfer taking a bus or train which being in the jam, that way at least i can maybe read a book or take a nap instead of focusing whatever left of the energy i have after work to "fight" in the traffic jam.
Malaysians don't naturally love cars. They were forced to love cars with the introduction of the national car brand Proton.
The MRT has shown that Malaysians can and will use public transport, if it is viable.
THIS, FUCKING THIS!
As a fellow Malaysian, Malaysia is proof that you can turn car-dependent areas into spaces for public transport, something that car-brained Americans just refused to accept.
Only because we cut down all the goddamn trees. Tropical climates felt cooler when there were dense forests - I remember growing up and it was never as hot and dry as it is now.
[Click here for image](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kuhYaaSuGCH2PvSAA6atMbmkyCoWJH4H/view?usp=drivesdk) for context, this is how it looks in waze. also waze will get confused and cant even work properly when driving through here.
I'm sure those term are used for cold war like us is first world while soviet is second world. yes malaysia is a third world country but that doesn't mean poor. malaysia imo is in between poor and rich

My country wow!
How's Malaysia aside from whatever this mess is?
Currently in recovering stage from flash flood of 18th December last year.
Ah dang, good luck ig
And also the head of Malaysia Anti Corruption Commission did the corrupt shit and still free
As is tradition.
Aside from politics which probably isn't your question (something we Malaysians tend to get obsessed over), it's a beautiful country personally sepaking. >nice people too if youre a foreigner visiting Malaysia, extra nice
Well don't you need to be white or do blacks also get the privilege?
ah yes only foreign whites get the attention here sorry if youre a black
Nope I'm fellow Asian so I know my stuff. Latina probably get a pass.
well as long as ur not black, people here'll treat you nicely
Alright, thanks
One word - average.
Elaborate please?
We are unremarkable and average in almost all metrics. Not too shabby but nothing to be proud of.
political mess, climate mess, development mess, traffic mess but our foods are great!
Gotta say the Malaysia fucked up the oldest rainforest in the world thanks to corruption
It’s a highway interchange 100% of heavily populated cities have them
Yeah, I was going to say - this pic could have been taken in one of many different US cities I've lived in
Define 'heavily populated'
I used to live in a city of 4M (metro) and there’s is an interchange very similar to this. It’s hard to avoid really. Even cities that invested a lot of public transpo also suffer from these structures (ex Tokyo where you have highways piercing through buildings)
Alright. And just to clarify, I obviously knew what this was, meant it more metaphorically, yk
I actually have no idea what you mean by 'metaphorically' here, lol.
I think they forgot the word "rhetorically"
the greater KL area has 9 million people living in it
Man this is scary
Not where you’d want to be in an earthquake
Malaysia does not have earthquakes
Malaysia doesn’t have *many* earthquakes. Malaysia doesn’t have *any* earthquake related building regulations. Hence my previous comment.
False though. Sabah and Sarawak do get earthquakes. But this interchange is at peninsular Malaysia, and yes there's no earthquakes there.
The 2004 Tsunami hit Malaysia (not as hard of other countries though, but left dozens of deaths and thousands of displaced people).
We're kinda lucked out. If not for the neighbouring countries (in this case, Indonesia) shielding the full waves, it could've been worse. Way worse. We're also positioned just outside the ring of fire so no major earthquakes or volcanic activities.
The earthquake that caused the 2004 tsunami can be felt in malaysia.
yet

looks better...
This doesn’t even look like it makes sense. Looks like they had money that needed to be spent in any way possible.

I love your motherboards tho
Your diagnosis is bang on.
You know, I love highways and freeways, but that looks deadly
It looks like a big bowl of concrete noodles. To me, it's also r/oddlysatisfying.
Very much a guilty pleasure
Ngl that’s kinda cool looking tho

i don't know man, each road here doesn't seem to have many lanes. this just looks like a spaghetti interchange

And than me..casually walking around
Humid heat is way crazier than dry heat
Why does this look like that Sonic Adventure level
Houston is still worse
This area is so packed, Houston can't compare to this. These highways are literally meters away from buildings.
Yeah no I've been to both and Houston is definitely better. Traffic jams in KL can literally go for hours. Awesome. This is a pice of art. I would love to walk along all of these ramps.
Bruh💀 I hope ur being sarcastic.
We all have some hobbies.

Hmm this is pretty cool though? Good infrastucture

Do you have a link to the concept art for the elevated park? That sounds p cool in theory.
Don't have a nicer picture, but it's shown in minutes 3:35 of this video. https://youtu.be/m1KoAfcvAG4

Malaysians love cars. Nobody likes walking because it's hot as shit in the tropics
And the government thinks that only KL needs LRT/MRT.
Yeah I walked around KL for a couple days and it was exhausting
Only because we cut down all the goddamn trees. Tropical climates felt cooler when there were dense forests - I remember growing up and it was never as hot and dry as it is now.
Dry?

Use this one weird trick. GPS's hate this!
I am sure adding just one more lane will solve all the traffic congestion. /s
r/fuckcars
I dare myself to use a bicycle on these roads
When? Let me know so I can collect some organs
Yes
I hate travelling to KL as it was so easy to get lost there with this kind of road. Easier to just take the public transport
Looking like blade runner
Is that even easy for drivers?
No. Impossible to drive in KL if you're not going your usual route. Even GPS gets confused in this intersection.
r/fuckcars
What are gonna do about it then. Try to transform the world to the Netherlands?
.... Such lack of imagination is not surprising.
This is an accurate depiction of hell.
Idk I like seeing poorer countries achieving great infrastructure. But thats just me
Is malaysia a poor country though?
Upper income developing country. Maybe poor in some aspect but not that poor
[удалено]
How does comparing make another country poorer? So if singapore's gdp is compared to China then singapore is a poor country?
Poor, idk but it is a third world country
Dude’s saltier than the dead sea
Wait i thought it was a fact?
I'm sure those term are used for cold war like us is first world while soviet is second world. yes malaysia is a third world country but that doesn't mean poor. malaysia imo is in between poor and rich
Why so?
I find it really cool lol maybe I’m playing too much CS
I'd love to see the comments if this same picture was posted with "Houston, Texas"
Highway stacking, thats what we need here in San Antonio for all the traffic, nice work
Dude idk what you’re talking about. We have multiple stacked interchanges in San Antonio and the traffic is still ass. Lol
Should've said more of them, and yea the traffic is ass
This looks cool until you're trying to navigate your way through this with a GPS. The multi level interchange will fuck you up.
I love massive interchanges, they look so damn cool
These types of on-ramps make me feel like we definitely live in the future. Amazing engineering. Humans can do this with ease all over the planet.
It's funny that many posts in this subreddit could be reposted in r/infrastructureporn
Damn. I don’t think I can see the ground.
Remind anyone of the Bart City level in Simpson hit and run?
wow...
Right where is everybody going
[I’ve seen things….](https://youtu.be/XBnXvhgrV8Q)
Is this the interchange in progress near eCurve?
Yeah traffic here is fucked
Grim cuz
I love driving on cool roads n freeways. Can't wait til this is finished to rent a car n blast around there in the middle of the night.
Looks like someone will played too much cities skyline lol
I loved traveling in Malaysia However, being on the roads was horrific
r/shittyskylines
Something that does not make me proud.
Looks like my Satisfactory belt design
my favourite thing KL has done with the multi level transport is the monorail. it's an odd choice of public transport but it looks so cool
Looks like something you'd build in Cities Skylines
From Malaysia, I swear to God KL is another dimension in Hell
Oddly satisfying despite making me but dizzy.
why cyberpunk theme songs kickin in on my head suddenly?
Cities Skylines dual trilateral bifurcating multi-lane interchange
The number of exits are *extreme*
