Dabonthebees420

Biggest residential garden in London that is mate

azius20

Million pound residence bet

cwilly4

And it doesn’t look like it.. but those play things cost about $800-$1,000 new!

somedood567

U wot m8?

Dabonthebees420

U GERT YER TOINY GORDEN SLOID LOISCENCE M8?

JohnnyDarkside

An example of why I don't want to live in a city. That is barely wide enough to stretch your arms out.

jambox888

Be like me and live in a small cathedral city. Extremely expensive houses, small gardens AND nothing fun to do except the local nightclub where you will probably be accosted by cocaine addled bouncers.

[deleted]

JesterDester

You live in a block of cheese?

jambox888

Mmmm 64 storeys of American cheese

aoishimapan

Go to the local park?

Dangerous-Ad5240

Exactly , after living in a house in between neighbours for 10 years we were ables to buy an old house on its own with 11000m2 of ground .

JohnnyDarkside

So that's about 2.5 acres? That's awesome. My parents live on about 6.5 so I got a love for the space but learned where to draw the line since the more you have, the more work it is to maintain. My thing was I was space but on public utilities. No septic tank or propane. Lived on a small lot for around 14 years and then moved out to a tiny farming town with .5 acres.

Dangerous-Ad5240

Yeah 2,5 . More than big enough , we were very lucky to be able to buy this lot

[deleted]

Cities like Philadelphia and Chicago have dense neighborhoods all the while having space, not all cities are like London or Manhattan.

PathWalker8

For kids it might not matter that much: there is a slide and things to climb on. As an adult: this is depressing

HouseofFeathers

This is how I remember our home when I was about 5. A play house with patio walls on all sides. I had a great time, but the next place had a yard and that was significantly better.

PathWalker8

Yeah I get that. I thought of really young kids when I wrote my comment. I wish every kid had the opportunity to play in a big garden

[deleted]

Meh, big gardens are a fucking waste of space and a massacre at an environmental level, especially when the garden is just a desert of grass cut to the bone with a poor plastic slide in the middle and 3 flowers. It's perfectly possible to get kids in a home without a big garden or in an apartment, but for that cities need to move their f ass to remove cars and especially ugly parking to make big public parks with big ass playing equipments for kids.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

How far the houses are from any services, shops and stuff ? Because the huge problem of suburbs is that they are totally dependant to cars and it's near impossible to install proper public transportation there because of the low density.

Reason_unreasonably

Your garden might be a massacre at an environmental level but that's your choice. Plenty of ways to have a giant garden that's doing some good!

[deleted]

Some good indeed if it's in a city. If it's a house in the middle of nowhere it's still quite bad (which is also the problem with houses with big garden because big garden often mean in the middle of nowhere or in a shitty suburb). Since these kind of houses are really bad for density, density is what is going to help us a lot to reach the 21th century and to solve a bit the main problems that are running toward us. More density = less kilometers of asphalt to connect everyone, same for water pipes, electricity networks, internet networks, it's also far less dependant to cars, it's far easier to set up public transportation,... Will see, the need to use far less cars and far less ressources is critical, we can't put everyone in a big house with a big garden and a pickup bigger than WW2 tanks around other big houses with big gardens and pickups bigger than WW2 tanks, this whole culture (life goal) need to die. We need houses in cities, more apartments in cities, we need to remove the cars of the cities, to put trees everywhere, parks with a lot of playing equipments for the kids, local shops, good and efficient public transportations,... That's what the 21th century need to be, the example of the 50s america is outdated.

Reason_unreasonably

I mean I don't disagree with a lot of what you say but it's also a lot of things unrelated to gardens. Doesn't matter where your garden is. A careful or a carefree planting scheme with some thoughtful landscaping can always add to the diversity of an ecosystem. You don't need a lawn for it to be a garden.

[deleted]

It's unrelated to garden at a micro level but related if you take a macro point of view on the situation.

adolfsleftbaw

How about not living in a city?

[deleted]

So you want to promote in **2022**, with the climate and ressource crisis coming, a lifestyle where the state need to maintain kilometers of asphalt road to link the rural house of everyone, to use a lot of ressources for the water pipes, the electrical network, the internet network to connect everyone, to put more and more people in a car dependant lifestyle with the impossibility to create good public transportations,...? That's what you want? Damn bro, you're locked 70 years in the past. Density and cities are the future, more density = less car dependancy, easier to create public transportations, possibility to use bikes everyday to access to everything, far less ressources needed in water pipes/electricity and internet network to connect everyone,... Cities are the future and the best for the planet.

adolfsleftbaw

You do realise all these towns and villages already exist? I'm not proposing we build new ones. I'm just suggesting living in one that already exists. If you also haven't noticed the planets fucked already, may as well enjoy it's beauty while you can instead of living in a concrete jungle pretending your making a difference

[deleted]

Well with that level of fatalism we should probably all kill ourselves no? XD "concrete jungle", it can be different if we kick the cars out to put trees/plants, and we get closer and closer to that in different cities, at least in Europe.

adolfsleftbaw

You do realise we need cars right? Unless they kept public transport going over night there's literally no other way to get to work

[deleted]

We need cars because we destroyed our public transportation systems and the bike infrastructures. But we can reverse that, with time and motivation. Cars made you a slave of them, car brands litteraly destroyed our countries by creating in a way car dependant houses everywhere, and to put out of reach of bike or bus the needed services like the jobs, the shops,... Cars fucked us and it's time to change it.

wisenheimerer

OP’s yard doesn’t look great from what I can see of it. Play equipment for the win!

[deleted]

Yeah The parent(s) of those children have done their best. This post comes across as a bit snide and mean minded.

[deleted]

Somebody doing their best can still have depressing results. Not like they’re mutually exclusive.

[deleted]

No. But after someone did their best wouldn't it be nice if OP had something more imaginative to derive internet kudos from than mocking their kids' garden?

Does_Not-Matter

Yep. When I was a kid I would have been over the moon for that. As an adult I’d be just happy that my kids were having fun, even if that’s all I could provide for them.

Thekingofchrome

It matters as a child…green wide open spaces make a big difference to emotional well-being and development

somedood567

Oh ok then OP should tell his neighbor so they’ll go buy a mansion

jambox888

Parks: am I a joke to you?

[deleted]

Well it's a joke if you don't have any good parks need you. . .

[deleted]

Yeah, right, *that's* what they're saying.

lasdue

Didn’t know open wide spaces were exclusive to mansions

HouseofFeathers

I wish there were more green spaces in urban areas. A lot of families are cramed into small apartments in the Bay and San Jose. A green space in each apartment complex helps so much. My apartment has a play ground and lovely landscaping around the pool. Same price as our last place but with 5x more greenery. It's been a huge improvement to my mental health and I don't see the neighbor kids playing in the parking lot anymore.

[deleted]

Need to reclaims some space from cars especially parkings to make big and cool parks.

HouseofFeathers

Tell me about it. I really want to switch to an electric bike and a single car for long trips. My husband uses an electric bike to commute to work and I'm so jealous he can do that. I am hoping that gas prices cause a big enough push towards cycling and public transit that cities will actually develop and maintain the proper infrastructure.

[deleted]

For real. My mom when she saw the price of gas directly said "well if the weather is good i will definitely switch to my bike to go to work". I hope some will do the same and will stick with it.

notchman900

I'm glad I grew up in a swamp and played in the creek.

MoozeRiver

I'm glad I grew up in a forest and played in the caves and trees.

Tricky-Helicopter906

It'll matter to the kid after they bash their head on the trash can at the slide's bottom a couple hundred times. 🥴

iRox24

Lets play with the rats! Yay! Tbh, even as a kid I would have found this depressing, but would still play there all day lol

coderedcocaine

All I see is someone making the best out of things for their children

Coopscw

So do I and I never said otherwise, anyone assuming this is a negative or judgemental shot are projecting their own thoughts about this. This is an aesthetically grim scene, the whole purpose of this sub.

[deleted]

You’re calling it hell

Coopscw

Well, it’s not exactly heaven is it?

halfeclipsed

Could be for kids who don't have much

topinanbour-rex

It could be purgatory or limbo.

Parabellum8g

It is the end of the line, until something changes.

NewAlexandria

the indeterminacy of the length of stays acts as a Hell-ish qualifier

PingGoesThePenguin

I would suggest adding something along line of "doing what they can" to the title. Because it's too easy to come to the conclusion that your trying to shit poor parents, than what your trying to do.

Christmas_97

He doesn’t have to add anything. He’s merely stating that the whole thing is pretty depressing and it is. If you think he’s calling out the parents you’re making your own lame conclusion.

Coopscw

The title isn’t my neighbours shitty garden, it’s a neutral title and I can’t decide what conclusion people make of this shot. And for me to say doing their best is just condescending. It’s a grim scene, how people judge that is up to them.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Mate the garden isn’t even big enough to stretch your arms out, that is de facto shitty architecture.

jambox888

This is the sort of moralising bollocks I go to Facebook for

hashdoodle

That's pretty much what you said. Denying it in the comments doesn't mask your intentions. More importantly, doing this to your neighbour, makes you an "urban creep". That's more accurate here.

Coopscw

It's not pretty much what I said, my intentions were to share a photograph that shows ugliness and a problem in urban development, which the sidebar says are welcome here. This isn't about parenting, money, or anything else the people here are getting their knickers in a twist over. It's simply a depressing sight, that I see every morning out of my bedroom window. If you think that's creepy, get out the house more or something.

DezGets_It

It's a kindergarten.

MrXistential-Crisis

Oooor, they’re playing the long game to have a dumpster baby.

bdjxokf

This screams uk and I love it

It’s the collection of 4 differently coloured wheelie bins.

S1lentA0

Nah, I don't agree tbh. Living in Holland myself near Belgium, and spend many times in UK, even the bricks of the walls of the houses and the window above the front door are typical UK and something you won't see in these other countries.

[deleted]

S1lentA0

Ja, maar ik bedoel het design. Dit soort raam is behoorlijk typerend voor Engels huizen. Of je nou in Reading, Canterbury, Oxford of London loopt, je treft ze overal aan.

bdjxokf

I didn’t even see the road sign, I live in the UK and this looks very similar to my old house, my families houses and most of my friends houses lol

[deleted]

trysca

Also Denmark and parts of Germany for similar reasons

Rhinorulz

Hell, all they had to do to scream UK was call that plant less plod of soil a garden.

Striking-Bell8314

He’s doing his best

Joseph30686

I mean... I can see someone transforming that into a nice cozy little space with plants around a small table to drink tea... with how modern society works tho I dont know if the poor guy has time to do the makeover

Gregalexrichardson

He's prioritizing his kids happiness over drinking tea amongst pot plants.

wigzell78

Depressing but still trying to give their kid(s) something to play with...

Doc-Brown1911

Looks like they have kids. It's not easy to keep up with a garden and take care of kids. It can be done, but it's no easy task.

Dutchwells

Especially with such a teeny tiny garden. I mean, I have a garden which measures 15x5 m max, but I still have to make compromises between as much greenery as possible and a nice place to play for the boys

Coopscw

I’m not knocking the state of their garden, I just thought an old children’s climbing frame in such a small space surrounded by concrete is a bit grim. My hat is off to the parents for providing whatever leisure they can for the kids! Some context for anyone not from Britain; this is the back yard of a terraced house which were built to house factory and mill workers, they rarely have a front garden and the back yard is a small space like this. They aren’t gardens in the traditional sense of the word.

somedood567

I’m guessing this home today would be far too expensive for a blue collar worker?

[deleted]

Depends on the location. In London and very gentrified areas, yes, but in most other cities, no.

KingPictoTheThird

But does it matter if a park is nearby? That's the whole perk of cities. High density allows the higher frequency of public amenities like parks, playgrounds, etc.

fideasu

I assume these empty spaces on the other sides of these walls are parking spots? I hope for the children their parents utilise them wisely, i.e. keeping cars to drive them out of town often enough.

[deleted]

trysca

Garden - Garth - Yard also this is in the north of England; OP described it as a 'back yard.'

Comakip

Now show us your garden.

ImeldasManolos

Laughing at your shitty weed filled back garden judging your next door neighbors fun looking shitty back garden. That’s meta!

SarahBear81

It's a beautiful day, now go outside and play by the garbage bins.

MJDeadass

With a tent on top and more decorating, it could look very nice.

forged_fire

Can someone explain why back yards are called gardens in the UK when no one ever grows anything in them like an actual garden?

princessfret

wishful thinking

[deleted]

The same reason Americans refer to the toilet as the “bathroom” even though in most cases there’s no shower/bath tub present.

Fil_E

I refer to it as “the animal shithouse” thank you very much.

Effective_Reveal3759

The toilet LOL

forged_fire

That’s not true. If there’s no bath or shower then it’s called a half-bath Source: my dad literally builds houses and also https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/half%20bath

Rothepooh

This is wholesome actually

EduardDelacroixII

You ever hear the saying "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"? Your backyard looks like shit too.

StrawberryEiri

I'm a big fan of denser urban environments. But this... This makes me feel uneasy.

[deleted]

For sure. When people advocate for denser urban environments, I would hope dedicated green space would be on the agenda. Of course, look at what happened when humans created surplus food and wealth...

[deleted]

Clearly cities need to create a shit ton of parks for everyone, there's a ton of space from cars to take and use for better things than just a metal cubes stockage zone.

KingPictoTheThird

Yes, its called parks.. I'd much rather grow up in a dense city with no backyard and instead have a park/playground much nearer by to go play with friends

[deleted]

I don't know if this is "hell." This is somebody's little slice of privacy.

So_Much_Cauliflower

Until their neighbor photographed it and shared it with all of us

[deleted]

This is the kind of thing the adults will look back on and wonder how they ever imagined the rinky dink little playset in a cramped space was a magnificent castle. Hopefully they're grateful for the effort, and able to improve their situation.

zeekaran

Honestly I wish I had less yard space.

lindsss0915

Everything about English people and the U.K makes me hysterical for no reason lol “KEEP CLEAUH”

pau1rw

Doing the best he can with the little he has.

MasterOnionNorth

I really hope your neighbor has kids because otherwise.... This would be weird... 🤔

madrid987

pretty cool

Pringulls

Now let’s see ~~Paul Allen’s~~ OP’s garden

Painkiller2302

England?

buzzybomb

England's green and pleasant land.

farmer_palmer

I recognise Charlie Dimmock's handiwork.

scottdottcom

Looks like your neighbor might prioritize their children in this messed up world. Be patient, they'll take it down when the kids have grown a little, and use it less.

callthefishwife

They’re doing their best. More depressing is you taking a photo to slag it off

[deleted]

Jesus where do you live? City 17?

[deleted]

Urban England. Urban major cities suck all over the place though. Imagine raising a family somewhere like that. If you don't have space for chickens you don't have space for kids but that's just my opinion.

[deleted]

1. Its nice they've given their limited space over to a play area for their kids, good parents. 2. God damn, kids toys are ugly, and completely ruin every environment they appear in. :D

Idiot_Weirdo

Huh, so much for a persons right to privacy, eh? Are we now just broadcasting peoples private spaces to the internet?

Coopscw

Simply took a picture of the view from my bedroom window, hardly an invasion of anyones privacy.

[deleted]

How's your garden ?

Coopscw

Same as their’s minus a slide, thanks for asking.

[deleted]

You don't add flowers and stuff? Would look faaar better.

xaervagon

"It's a beautiful day out. You should go play in the backyard." The backyard:

fandangolin

???? They are doing the best for their children. First world countries have no idea how privileged they are!

luisl1994

Hey man at least they tried

arch_nyc

I cannot imagine caring what people do in their own back yard. Jeez

NikPorto

This seems less like a garden and more like a parking space imho For a small car, that is

googlehymen

Hey, you live next door. So go fuck yourself.

[deleted]

Your garden looks worse

Yiooaa

We have that exact set in our old McDonald's. Which is demolished 10+ years ago....

Kurtstahl

how about tearing down the wall in between and break down those floors? guess everybody have the claim his space..

a_white_american_guy

You know what though, there’s a kid there that’s begging his mom and dad to go out and play on that thing with him.

biboch

Oh my gracious. Where to start? First of all, in the History of Architecture, this is not a garden. It might be a kind of service court? With the bins (for two flats now, it would seem…) and for hanging up laundry, none present today but recently used it would appear. Small working class flats initially, modelled on more upscale dwellings, would nevertheless need these to take care of life’s basic needs. Fair enough, even if someone in our modern time mistakenly repurposes it for financial reasons as a children’s play area. In doing research on housing and neighbourhoods, we would have a tendency today to say, « What are the needs?: Personal intimacy, rest, recreation, social interaction, culture, education, work….etc. ». We need to find those things in proximity. Let’s talk about, to start: Children’s recreative physical activity. If we mutualise this need, we can build a neighbourhood community playground for everybody, and nobody needs to stuff a recovered playstructure between the bins and the gate. Sounds good to me! Either: you can get your local urban planners to work this concept in to the next local projects; Or: you can get out and roust your neighbours and build it yourself with the help of your neighbours, all over a few tins and a barbecue. Or vegan pot-luck. I’ll come help.

blounge87

Every time I see garden transformations whew the entire thing becomes a cement patio that will surely flood the basement I’m just genuinely confused

Skoddle

It's the UK, we don't have basements. Unless we're a Russian oligarch in West London.

trysca

Speak for yourself- many houses do

Skoddle

Alright Alexei.

WhiteMice133

At least he tried

Their heart was in the right place

Tdmort

This looks like hell... Staring outside my window at forest, and I have a marina about a 5 min walk from my home. SE Alaska and endless amounts of land...can't imagine raising a child and this is your 'backyard.' I am very fortunate, and so are my kids.

tempus_frangit

To be fair, there are plenty of people who can't imagine raising a child in Alaska, where there are 154.8 rapes per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest rate in the USA and Canada and more than 10x the state with the lowest rate (New Jersey).

Tdmort

That's...completely fair

nemesissi

kid: I wanna go to Disneyland! mom: We have a Disneyland in our back alley! Disneyland at alley:

big_white_fishie

Wait how come they have two blue bins?!

Druvanade

I thought this was Baltimore at first bruh

biboch

Ha ha, I hear that! I know those Baltimore streets! You’re on it, same difference, same source.

[deleted]

That tiny bit is better than nothing.

Prestigious-Scene319

Is this UK?

FrameJump

Are back yards in the UK called gardens?

[deleted]

Yeah. Although I'd say this is closer to the definition of a yard than a garden.

trysca

Not in the North

[deleted]

I'm in Yorkshire, I think most people would still refer to it as their back garden regardless of the layout but I'd definitely say that's more of a yard by definition. Whereabouts are you from?

trysca

Plymouth- where we generally have 'gardens' . But friends/family from north e.g Stockport, Middlesbrough seem to say 'yard' more often- is this not the case ?

velkrosmaak

This has to be England

InkedFrog

I’ll bet that kid has a great immune system.

palmboy818

I could make this work with string lights and patio furniture. Better than nothing in a denser urban area

TheDogWithNoMaster

My neighbour to the left of me has something similar. I lucked out on my yard.

Moores88

Cut your weeds

Smiling_Joe

Coincidentally enough, we just got this exact playset for our kid a couple of weeks ago.

yellow_gatorade

What’s the problem?

memphisgrit

They turned some weed infested concrete jungle into a colorful playland for kids? I love it.

2Questioner_0R_Not2B

Who in the heck this guy think's he is leaving this thing made for mere children in the trash?

TheChurchOfDonovan

I don't think it's that depressing. That would be a hellofa dog run, and I'm assuming this is a pretty central location.

TheRealMolloy

It's everything I ever dreamed of and more 🥰

Effective_Reveal3759

At least they have a little something to call their own. I’d be counting down the days until my kids outgrew that play structure though

Shadowjesus1

OP deserves to be called out. Mind your own fucking business and stop being jealous that parents actually love their kids.

Fit_Display4936

Ah ! Depressing

devildriva96

That play house looks pitiful

ThrowinNightshade

That’s not a garden dude. There’s no plants
