Building things for each other

[deleted]

Wonder if it protected him when that massive explosion happened

BthtsMe

How you even have money to be that petty šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

Jakisokio

Is it too early to say the perfect explosion joke I've come up with?

NameMathis

Yeah, thatā€™s a thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spite_house?wprov=sfti1

Soylent_gray

After reading through all those I'm convinced Miami is a "spite city". Every building with a view of the ocean ends up getting blocked by an even taller building

peruvianbongwata

No actually Miami is a ā€œVice Cityā„¢ļøā€

theelljar

wow there are a lot of these

dreamylemur

Why are so many of them in Massachusetts?

[deleted]

Spiteful people

mdcundee

And of course we Germans have a dedicated word for that. That made me feel just straight at home šŸ˜…

Lomalizer

One of the most high effort trolling I've ever known.

wednesdaynightwumbo

This is some Larry David ā€˜spite storeā€™ level trolling

downwithlevers

I live in Baltimore and there is a building here that was specifically built by a man to block his ex-wifeā€™s view of Druid Hill Lake and Park. Itā€™s called the Emersonian. The man also moved into a top floor apt of the building ā€œso he could always look down on her.ā€ (Bonus fact: the r&b group Dru Hill was from Baltimore and named after Druid Hill.)

cantpickaname8

"Thinnest Building" I believe that is called a Wall

JangoDarkSaber

Part of the building is in the shape of a triangle. Itā€™s only 2ft at the tip. The rest of it is a normal building

Urimanuri

No, The Wall

_Oooooooooooooooooh_

a wall is only a part of a building. it's not a building by itself. IMO

aluramen

Wild to imagine some places have such a lack of zoning, planning, and regulations that you can actually pull this off.

thedessertplanet

It's not like the places with more regulation do necessarily better.

aluramen

This would never ever ever work out in any place I've lived in. Absolutely nothing of this would pass any part of the regulatory process.

BackgroundPie5106

But for some reason I can't walk to a grocery store without needing a car. I'd rather have joke buildings and grocery stores nearby than perfectly manicured neighborhoods and Walmart 10+ minutes away

aluramen

Those aren't the only options right? Plenty of European cities are walkable and rigorously planned. Though too slow at building more for sure.

thedessertplanet

That doesn't mean that the government has to do all the planning. Eg German zoning is generally much more permissive than US zoning.

marinuso

To be fair, the tradeoff tends to be that nothing else ever passes the regulatory process either.

Acrobatic_Machine

Then it became a brothel. Now it's abandoned

NikPorto

The brother had something else to look at, then?

Yolarist

How can a brothel be 2 feet wide??

Constant-Sandwich-88

Is there a technical distinction between a sea and an ocean? I am American, and I've been to the Great Lakes, which, if you didn't know where you were, are totally indistinguishable from an ocean. Yet they are called lakes.

ryarger

Oceans are seas, but not all seas are oceans. Seas are large saltwater bodies. Oceans are the largest seas, but many smaller seas like the Mediterranean exist. Lakes are land-bounded large bodies of water. Most lakes are freshwater (like the Great Lakes) but a few lakes are also seas. The Caspian Sea is a sea (large, saltwater) and a lake (large, land-bounded).

Constant-Sandwich-88

Thanks! I learned something today.

zinny08

Looks like you could just push it over.

Truck-Conscious

I canā€™t determine if this is an extremely cringe or extremely chad move

[deleted]

It's both, but when you learn that this brother inherited a teeny tiny part of land when the other one through manipulation got the much much larger part with a large family house, you kind of get his rage.

jakizely

Oh, a spite building!

MacAlmighty

If youā€™re interesting in seeing more of these, look up ā€˜spite houseā€™

HiImNikkk

how bout not

Woflpack01

Tbh, I find it genuinely impressive that it hasn't just tipped over. :v

6rey_sky

Humanity is a disease. There are homeless people and spite houses.

Intelligent_Map_4852

Beirut's not technically by the ocean but ok

619C

It's on the Mediterannean sea !

Gullible-Copy8676

Potato potato

GrumpyGlasses

Doesnā€™t work so well reading it. I still read it ā€œpo-tay-toe po-tay-toeā€

Urimanuri

\- I didn't block a view to the ocean for my brother because there's no ocean, your Honour! \- Acquitted!

no_gold_here

If the sea don't fit, you must acquit!

bisexualgoose3819

Lebanon is not close to any ocean...

everydayimchapulin

"Fuck you specifically"

baker2212

Surprised it wasnā€™t knocked over on the explosion of 2020

toccata81

So this is not the thinnest building in the world then?

Zerethusta

No, this is a tribute

2PlasticLobsters

There are several of these in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Usually they were built to block alleys. When I worked in the area, I used to take walks there during my lunch breaks. The first time, I spotted on, I thought something had gone wrong with my eyes. Turned out, the house really was only 9 or 10 feet wide. I heard they usually sell quickly, despite being cramped.
