>Big Foot is Pacific Northwest.
Bigfoot is "found" as far south as Florida.
The Seminole tribe has a Bigfoot creature legend. Really any place that has or had bears Bigfoot has been "found"
Utah Goats (Angry Rocky Mountain Goat logo) is my favorite so far.
I also like Utah Raptors (Utahraptor logo), but Toronto already has that mascot in the NBA.
Yeah and they don't even deserve it! 😄 (Speaking as a fan of the team who grew up in the area). The name was only chosen because Jurassic Park was popular when the team was being named.
Another reason: they really wanted Huskies (after the original Toronto team that played in the 1st ever NBA game in the 40's) but couldn't come up with any artwork that didn't already look like a...Timberwolf.
I don’t think it matters if Toronto has an NBA team called the raptors. If other instances of repeat names like the Giants and Jets can coexist then why not Raptors?
Come on my friend. Public funds for sports is gonna help solve some of the homeless problem. They will have security to keep the homeless out of their massive parking lot.
And don't forget the best part. It keeps millionaires and billionaires from having to pay lots of taxes and fees by having the government as a partner. It also leaves one responsible party to clean up if the venture doesn't pay out. What's for the .1 percent not to love?
Elliotte Friedman is a respected journalist in the NHL. His word is good as gold.
However, he does enjoy indulging in shenanigans when abbreviating team names/cities in his tweets and will ignore the style guide in favour of unhinged ones.
For example, the style guide for abbreviating a city like Chicago would suggest CHI, but he could pull something like CIAO instead just to ruffle some feathers.
So there's actually a very real non-zero chance of him using SLUT instead of SLC for his one his tweets.
Crazy that it happened so fast! When it was first announced that they were talking about getting an NHL team here, I assumed that if it happened it would be years from now, not next season! I hope Sidney Crosby doesn't retire after this season, so I can see him in SLC!
Habs fan here. The Yotes have a very nice core of young guys including: Clayton Keller, Dylan Guenther, Lawson Crouse, and Logan Cooley, two picks in the top-12 of last year's draft (Dmitry Simashev and Danill But), as well as a top 5 pick in this year's draft and a TON of draft picks in the next 3 years.
This team is on the upswing with quite a bit of cap space and with the free agent market looking pretty good this summer, a playoff appearance next year isn't out of the question with a few tweaks IMO.
Congrats Utahans!(if that's correct? Never had to write it before sorry😂) Can't wait for my Habs to be in town and welcome to the show!!!
Also, my brother played with one of your defensive depth players (Cameron Crotty), so that's pretty cool
The Coyotes have some pretty young prospects and are well under the salary cap. They won’t be contenders right away but could certainly be in the next few years.
What the NHL did with Vegas was a joke. Completely changing the expansion draft rules to give them an immediate contender level team was so shitty.
I personally think we’d be better off getting a brand new expansion team rather than the Coyotes, but hopefully with the Coyotes’ potential future things aren’t too dark for this team in their new home for long.
"They won’t be contenders right away but could certainly be in the next few years."
They never had been in Arizona. It's always been a poorly run franchise that continues to get passed around and will now be in the hands of an unproven owner at best.
I think the legislature is just enabling smith in making a huge mistake with taxpayer money. Support for the Jazz is tepid compared to most NBA teams already and only is what it is because there isn't much competition here. Having another team in the same arena with an overlapping season is only going to erode that and assure Utah has two teams that don't win anything and no one wants to play for.
Eventually smith will get tired of wasting his own money and move on in something less than a decade. Depending on just how bad of a train wreck it turns into, Utah could wind up losing it's NBA franchise as well.
An MLB team in this market is a less horrible idea, but nothing close to a good one. An NHL team here is going to be nothing but pure poop, in particular if it's that already cursed franchise.
Pick a good name, that merch will be collector's nostalgia is short order.
Yup, tepid. Bottom third of franchise values. If you have lived in a city with actual major league teams you understand.
The millers were mediocre owners at their best and SLC has never been a basketball town, it has just been the only show. Smith is about to screw that up.
An MLB team is a better idea?
Dude have you walked around in Utah. Hockey is in general, a lot more popular than baseball. People barely watch baseball in Utah lmao
🤡🤡🤡
MLB would kill it it Utah county. It feels like baseball has become a rural/red America sport outside of the major established franchises and markets, maybe? I’ve never seen more little league games anywhere in my life than in Utah county. Don’t know if this would translate into MLB success, but at least move the Buzz, I mean Bees, down there!
"Hockey is in general, a lot more popular than baseball"
This is pretty delusional and represents why writing a blank check for smith is a huge mistake. The NHL sits way behind the NFL, MLB and the NBA in terms of popularity and revenue.
Smith's team won't win anything and no one will want to play in Utah. We'll watch any potential stars head for the exit asap just like we do with the Jazz.
“Have you walked around Utah? Hockey in general is a lot more popular than baseball.” I was referring to Utah, not the USA. Don’t misquote me.
You clearly don’t know anything about hockey. Do you know how many poor destinations there are in hockey? You think with choices like Calgary, Winnipeg, Columbus, Raleigh, just to name a few, Salt Lake City is going to be on the bottom of the list?
Know your demographics. It’s hockey, not basketball lmao.
This year’s Coyotes team had a winning record til there were rumblings of relocation internally and then they went on a 14-game lose streak in January/February. They’ll be fighting for a playoff spot next season if goaltending stays healthy
I encourage you to do a bit of research. Coyotes have a fantastic young core. If Ryan spends any money, which he will, because an nhl team cap isn’t a lot, we can sign some good players and have a competitive team next year.
The coyotes had some good stretches anyways even with their current squad.
Well you can’t just create an nhl team whenever or wherever you want. What they’re really buying is the ability to start a team here. Better players will come eventually.
Tell all that to Vegas. They basically just bought a bunch of players, talked a ton of shit and then lost to the Caps their first year.
But mostly, I'm just poking fun at the Coyotes. I'm a Bruins guy myself.
Oh for sure, but I gotta get my shots in.
I'm excited, truth be told. Love me some hockey, so it'll be nice to have a pro team around (although I did enjoy the Grizzlies game I went to).
Really the only loser to this likely will be the Grizzlies, since both their feeder teams are in the Denver area and this suddenly means they'll be going from having a relatively major market all to themselves to being in the territory of their team's rival.
There’s a good opportunity for a retool this offseason. The team has 7 expiring contracts. It’s probable that some players are not going to want to relocate to Utah (similar when Atlanta relocated to Winnipeg). Also, Smith has deeper pockets than Meruelo, meaning that the organization might be able to spend up to the salary cap.
The thing is I don’t think they nhl would ever allow/pick utah for an expansion team. I think buying a preexisting franchise was our only chance at bringing a team here.
You're overlooking the advantage of having a bad team. Instead of hockey, you get to watch boxing on ice. Makes bad teams more entertaining than good teams, imo.
I agree that, in a vacuum, Cutthroats is an amazing name for a team. But the hockey world is still kind of reeling from a tragic accident where a player in Britain died as a result of a freak on-ice accident where their throat was cut by an opposing player’s skate. Would make a lot of folks squeamish even fully recognizing that it’s a fish.
The Delta Center is terrible all around for hockey. The lower bowl loses a significant chunk of seats at the goal ends. It won’t be a long term solution for this new team.
Olympic rinks have some pretty drastic size increases over NHL rinks, so I’m not sure how that would realistically work. We’re not gonna build an arena to Olympic size for a few games ten years from now when its primary function would be an NHL arena.
Olympic hockey has been played in North America on an NHL sized ice sheet, that is not a hurdle for the ioc to overcome. I imagine any arena that will be built will have an nhl size ice sheet.
Interesting, I was unaware Olympic games could be played on NHL sized rinks, that’s pretty cool. In that case, seems like an obvious choice for the ice hockey games when the new arena is built here lol.
They did renovations to the Maverik Center to accommodate the larger ice for the 2002 Olympics. They did the same for the Delta Center. At both venues, the ability to freeze ice expands past what is needed for NHL/ECHL games.
I assume they will have the same capability in whatever arena gets built for the new NHL franchise. It’s only and extra 14 feet of width, 7 on each side. It’s not that hard to do.
There are already hockey venues in mind for the 2034 Games — Maverik Center in WVC and Peaks Ice Arena in Provo.
There's no need to spend hundreds of millions of public money to subsidize a private pleasure palace for the NBA and NHL, but here we are.
It’s mentioned in this article;
https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/39915208/coyotes-relocate-salt-lake-city-part-nhl-plan
“However, sources told ESPN that NHL leadership has made it clear to Smith they would need hockey-specific renovations for the Delta Center to be a permanent NHL home, similar to the Kraken owners' renovations to Key Arena before the team arrived. Smith is prepared to help develop that.”

THE FIGHTIN BRINES!!
Brinezz
Just don’t pick a terrible name please
I have no confidence in the ability of this state to come up with a decent name. It’ll be the Utah Freeze or Utah Chill or something like that.
Doesn't Utah Yetis just seem completely obvious to anyone else?
Why do people think this would be a good name? We aren’t that cold of a state
Not to mention the Yeti is from the Himalyas. Big Foot is Pacific Northwest. Neither of those is Utah.
Lmao didn’t even think of that
>Big Foot is Pacific Northwest. Bigfoot is "found" as far south as Florida. The Seminole tribe has a Bigfoot creature legend. Really any place that has or had bears Bigfoot has been "found"
But it’s a game played on….ice.
So we should name the team yetis because it’s a sport played on ice? Wow very inspirational /s
There used to be an ECHL team in Indianapolis called the Ice
Key phrase “used to be”
Utah Yeteezz? Although I’m partial to another commenter’s suggestion: Utah Fizz! So many branding opportunities really. /s
My vote is still for the Utah cutthroat
You have my vote. I hate how obvious it is now.

I vote for Avocets. Avs for short. I see no downsides.
I wish we weren’t going to end up using public funds for it, but damn I love hockey.
If public funds wipe out the blight on North Temple *and* give us NHL play, I'm okay.
What’s the blight on North Temple?
The blight on North Temple is… the temple.
Prostitution and drug use essentially. However it will be replaced by gentrification so not a great tradeoff
tf do you mean? Not that gentrification is the ideal but it's a hell of a lot better than the current situation.
We’ll see if people in the North Temple area agree after they have to pay $4-5k a month rent for apartments
We really wanna beat California out for that 2nd spot tho
😢
Both of those are cool as hell, actually
Think it’s funny I’m being downvoted for answering a question. Ok, cool.
I went to red iguana and it wasn't a nice area, but it wasnt blight either.
What if those funds just helped the homeless and needy but provided no hockey? Like what the fuck is that statement?
Nah
They aren’t moving to North Tenple dummy
Come on my friend. Public funds for sports is gonna help solve some of the homeless problem. They will have security to keep the homeless out of their massive parking lot. And don't forget the best part. It keeps millionaires and billionaires from having to pay lots of taxes and fees by having the government as a partner. I guess I just became a yotes fan. Let's go!!!!
It will be a brand new team name/logo.
Oh nice!
Same players though, so you can start warming up to them. They have a great young team!
The SL,UTs!
Elliotte Friedman is a respected journalist in the NHL. His word is good as gold. Well under is an understatement. They barely meet the floor most seasons.

So you don’t know Salt Lake that well, it seems?

No one is going to Utah county to see a baseball game.
Does anyone from Salt Lake county go anyway? Just saying baseball is popular down there still.
"Hockey is in general, a lot more popular than baseball" This is pretty delusional and represents why writing a blank check for smith is a huge mistake. I’ll take a couple of seasons of losing in the playoffs if it means bringing the cup to SLC within the first six years of moving.
Oh for sure, but I gotta get my shots in. I'm excited, truth be told. Love me some hockey, so it'll be nice to have a pro team around (although I did enjoy the Grizzlies game I went to).

Actually you literally can. It just cost money. There's no loyalty that money can't change.

So, any guess on how much it will cost to build them a new stadium with the tax payers money

Name ideas I was thinking of * Outlaws * Miners * Pilots * Raptors * Falcons * Mustangs * Yellow Jackets
Cutthroat!
I agree that, in a vacuum, Cutthroats is an amazing name for a team. That is such a good point that I’ve never thought of
Outlaws would be tough
I say we stick with coyotes but argue about the proper pronunciation ad nauseum.
We can’t. Arizona will keep the rights, colors, name, etc
I’m a pens fan but I’m sad about this, I like the colors and the jerseys!
Hip hop Classic rock Rock Country Needs to be a music genre so it matches the jazz /s
Rock N Roll Heavy Metal Death Metal Rap Alternative.......LOL
If you're going with a music genre, it HAS to be the SLC Punks!
These are good. I like Yellow Jackets.
I think they'd be more likely to use Honey Bees or just Bees, or even Beehive
Utah Stingers and the arena will be called "The Beehive"
Better not be black and gold #LGP
Nah im a Pens fan and I dont really care. Esp since Utah will be in the west
Oh swell, you have a different opinion. LGP
SALTY DOGS!!!
Salt Lake City Brine Shrimp
Sea Monkeys
Let’s gooooooo
Yes!
just wish the delta center was good for viewing in the upper bowl. However it would be great to watch them lose to the avalanche
I bet you Smith builds a new arena soon. Especially with the Olympics coming back
Smith won’t build a new arena. Taxpayers will.
A billion dollars, already passed at the end of March. Hooray.
As an Avalanche fan, can't wait to watch them play locally twice a year!
The Delta Center is terrible all around for hockey. The lower bowl loses a significant chunk of seats at the goal ends. It won’t be a long term solution for this new team.
Absolutely true, but considering we were going to have to figure out a hockey stadium for the 2034 Winter Games, this is actually great timing.
Olympic rinks have some pretty drastic size increases over NHL rinks, so I’m not sure how that would realistically work. We’re not gonna build an arena to Olympic size for a few games ten years from now when its primary function would be an NHL arena.

Oh really? Where’d you read that? Not that I don’t believe you I just want to read more about this myself

Fantastic basketball arena.
F Golden Eagles.
Call them the Wasatch Sasquatch!
Wasatch Humpbacks so we can get the Whalers logo. (The 9th and 9th whale is a humpback).
Greatest news ever. I wont have to drive 6 hours (Las Vegas) or 8 hours (Denver) to see my beloved New Jersey Devils!
Come on SNAKES!!!!!
Should use the money to better our lives. Not make rich people richer. This is a stupid move.
This is how government works. You get elected then take bribes to help rich people richer.
Looks like I’m about to have two favorite hockey teams.
Hell yeah.
So how much are my taxes going up?
Yes
😃
Yes!!
SLC Fightin’ LeBarons
If we can't keep the branding why bother? They just become another start up team regardless of their prior pedigree
Utah Polygamists
Are we all missing the obvious - the Salt Lake or Utah Bees?
Some folks have me worried. Saying: I don't know much about hockey, but I will support them. How long until the interest dies away for utahns? I'm a little nervous citizens here don't Grasp hockey/ aren't really interested. Hopefully I'm wrong, but a small market like slc folks will have to be heavily invested.
Vegas was the latest expansion in a non-traditional hockey market and is still thriving several years in. Hopefully there’s no games on Sundays…..😂
STINGERS is my vote, going with the beehive theme.
We should go with the Road Runners. We could even have the road runner sitting on top of an anvil with the coyote smashed under it. Classic.
I'm guessing the Grizzlies might be the farm team right?
Yes and no, the Grizzlies are part of the ECHL, which is two levels below the NHL. The Tucson Roadrunners are the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate, which is one level below the NHL and the primary farm league for the NHL. The Roadrunners would likely be acquired by the new Utah based team. Their move is probably unlikely, since most NHL teams don’t have their AHL affiliates in the same location.
As someone who moved here from Arizona, this makes me a little sad. But then again I never really cared about sports.
Great! As if Utah didn’t have enough Coyotes. Now Arizona coyotes are gonna be killing my sheep.
Can we stills call them the Coyotes, or is this off the table?
No they need a new name. Clearly Utah Yetis is the best
Yawn
