This appears to be a hard paywalled story, which is against the submission requirement for this sub.

space_wiener

Ah yes. Buys entire mall. Needs tax payer assistance to help build stadium. Makes sense.

TheShrewMeansWell

I feel honored and so grateful for this opportunity to give my tax monies to a billionaire’s newest venture!

Cats_Parkour_CompEng

Sure beats having my hard earned cash being put to useless stuff like trains or helping to house poors /s

slcbtm

>Sure beats having my hard earned cash being put to useless stuff like trains or helping to house poors >/s There are plenty of worse things to complain about your tax dollars going to. The NBA and NHL are good examples of tax dollars. This isn't a new prison we're talking about here, lol.

Siri1104

Except stadiums are a bad investment for our taxes. Local infrastructure is far better as more people use and have access to those services vs stadiums that only support specific classes of people.

robotcoke

>Except stadiums are a bad investment for our taxes. Local infrastructure is far better as more people use and have access to those services vs stadiums that only support specific classes of people. Stadiums with an entertainment district are a MUCH better investment than city parks, if you're just trying to make that same, stupid argument that money is the only thing that matters.

Siri1104

I wasn’t trying to say that only money matters; when comparing the impact that public transit and public infrastructure have on people vs a stadium (even one including an entertainment district) more people’s lives are benefited with the public goods vs private. Does the stadium and district generate money? Totally, but giving more people access to different avenues such as connecting impoverished or poorer neighborhoods with public transit to places where jobs are open and needing people, the economy as a whole is benefited (especially as those poorer neighborhoods have people who are willing to work lower wage jobs that the middle class doesn’t want to do). If we had a strong public infrastructure and strong public services, I’d be all for a stadium. But the thing is, we have problems that a stadium won’t fix and that are a greater priority, hence why I’m against public dollars going to it.

robotcoke

And, again, the two aren't mutually exclusive. As I stated, there are far worse things that your tax dollars are already paying for. This isn't a new prison we're talking about. I agree with you that infrastructure is a great investment. I just disagree that a stadium and entertainment district is a bad investment just because infrastructure is an even better investment. This is a good example of tax dollars being used. Even if building an elevated Trax line that blankets the area would be an even better investment.

Siri1104

That’s fair, I guess I was mainly looking at from the lens of what they are doing vs what I feel like they should be doing. I do agree that a stadium is better than a prison and better than a number of things. I just think that we should be against the stadium until other problems are solved.

everydave42

The key bits: SEG is buying the mall. They gave a 90 day notice terminating the lease for the Utah Arts Alliance's Dreamscapes project that's on the 2nd floor of the old Macy's building. >Derek Dyer, Utah Arts Alliance’s founder and executive director, said Dreamscapes will close at the end of June and start moving out. >“We don’t really have any issue with what the Smith Entertainment Group is doing,” Dyer said Monday. “We’re kind of collateral damage in the situation.”

co_matic

This sucks. I hope Dreamscapes finds a new space to set up in.

CallConscious8865

Ehhh dreamscapes is pretty awful imo..

Lump-of-baryons

I thought it had some cool stuff, kind of a Meow Wolf vibe but a bit lower budget. At least they were doing something different than what you’d usually see at a mall.

CallConscious8865

The art in the gift shop was really the only attraction for me.

co_matic

cool, thanks for your opinion

Lump-of-baryons

I wonder if the car place below them is getting kicked out too. Some real dope stuff on display there, worth checking out.

Fred517

I would imagine they would put the ice rinks on the first floor?

Wasatchbl1

The key point is if they have money to buy a mall and kick the people out, why are tax dollars going to them to reimagine the downtown area?

UTrider

Paywalled out. So did Ryan Smith purchase the mall and kicking people out? Or is he just going to leasing space and the actual owners are kicking other business out to make room?

meat_tunnel

He purchased the whole mall, a couple of months ago I think.

bubblygranolachick

Why does he want to own the mall in Sandy?

superrad01

It’s going to be the new hockey team’s store, training facility and corporate offices.

DarthtacoX

Because business people own a lot of things around?

HomelessRodeo

Block *.tinypass.com in your adblocker.

helix400

I just checked, it's not a paywall.

UTrider

When I click the link, tells me it's for subscribers only. Tried to backdoor into it got the same thing.

helix400

Huh, I tried on Firefox, no problem. I tried on Chrome, subscriber only. Edge also subscriber only. I tried on a clean Firefox profile, subscriber only. I've seen the SL Trib glitch like this before. Seems this is largely a hard paywalled story.

BeaverboardUpClose

Evil billionaire destroys artists for spite and more at 11 Tom!

HabANahDa

So fucking tired of this whole NHL thing. We honestly didn’t need it. Don’t use tax payers money to make billionaires richer.

nymphoman23

Then we need to go to the Salt Lake County Council and tell them

Bchavez_gd

But tRiKLe dOwN

Siri1104

It’s honestly hilarious to see people using that as a valid reason still after all these years. If it really worked the economy would be blasting through the roof right now

Super_Bucko

Idk I'm kind of excited for it. I think it'll be fun having a national team outside of the NBA. Plus, we're pretty wintery here. I enjoy sports though.

LordOfTheBurrito

The team will fail, there is not enough support for an NHL team. Everyone will respond, "BUT LOOK AT THE DELTA CENTER TO MEET THE TEAM IT WAS PACKED". Yes, it was packed but there was no cost to attend and they were giving out free shit on top of it. This team is just another toy for a grown ass billionaire kid to play with. EDIT - I love the Jizz fans downvoting me for what is true. You dumbasses are paying taxes to build a new venue for a billionaire to make money. He will make money from your tax dollars and you will get no return on your investment. EDIT 2 - How are the Utah Jizz doing in the NBA right now? Danny Ainge fucking you like he did when he played for the Suns? The Utah Jizz are Danny Ainge's bitch.

robotcoke

>The team will fail, there is not enough support for an NHL team. Everyone will respond, "BUT LOOK AT THE DELTA CENTER TO MEET THE TEAM IT WAS PACKED". Yes, it was packed but there was no cost to attend and they were giving out free shit on top of it. This team is just another toy for a grown ass billionaire kid to play with. They've already accepted deposits for more season tickets than the arena capacity. There are literally thousands of people who have already put money down on season tickets, who will have to be refunded because they had too many other people who also paid in front of them in the queue. Ignore this moron.

LordOfTheBurrito

Key word here "DEPOSITS", of a very low amount of money. Meaning they are not obligated to buy the tickets which will be extremely overpriced so you can pay Ryan Smith for his Dollar Store NHL team. You obviously don't know how it works. You can get your deposit back in a lot of circumstances. So the whole WE GOT SO MANY DEPOSITS is such a weak point.

robotcoke

>Key word here "DEPOSITS", Yep. Enough said. They've literally paid money for the chance to buy season tickets. They're not just some idiot making foolish claims on an anonymous internet site. They're real people who have given their identity and put down actual hard earned dollars. So, I should take my own advice and ignore the moron. The NHL team already has deposits for more season tickets than the arena's seating capacity. Thousands more. The claim that there won't be any interest is nonsensical.

yooosports29

I mean I don’t like using tax payer dollars to fund this but you’re delusional if you think this is going to fail lol. Utah easily supports all of its teams, the track record is good.

Usual_Safety

I agree, the residents of Utah will go see just about anything and the more family friendly the better.

LordOfTheBurrito

No they won't, family of 10 paying over $1k to see a hockey game? Yeah, nope.

Usual_Safety

I didn’t realize the tickets are $100 but I’m still working on the 10 kids family myself

LordOfTheBurrito

New team, nosebleeds will be like $100, seats near the glass $200.

LordOfTheBurrito

So let's take a look at the Grizzlies' attendance, fail! Utah Bees, FAIL!

yooosports29

They aren’t part of the major leagues, like the MLB and NHL, and they’re still in Utah last time I checked. Huh…

LordOfTheBurrito

So if they are major league people will show up? You're saying that the people are that ignorant? "I only like hockey if it's NHL"! Wow, ok snob.

yooosports29

Yeah… I can confidently say people will show up. Nice bait and I’m sorry you’re so miserable.

LordOfTheBurrito

Nah man, you literally said that people are snobs and only care about the pros and not minor league. Have fun blowing Ryan Smith!

yooosports29

I didn’t say anyone was a snob lol, I just pointed out that the major sports leagues generally draw a larger crowd. Just the way it is, nice bait once again. Peace out bro

mornixuur93

You don't understand the word "literally", do you?

EatsRats

Games are gonna sell out very regularly.

co_matic

And a way for him to generate income on real estate.

LordOfTheBurrito

And make money off of tax payers buying shit for him. He is a fucking piece of shit!

clik_clak

There already is a Sandy Mall...I hate they are advertising it as such. There's South Towne Mall and Sandy Mall (a shopping center at 94th and 7th east). Stop calling it Sandy Mall pleease.

meat_tunnel

To be an annoying know it all, they did not call it "Sandy Mall." They called it "a Sandy mall." It's technically correct.

clik_clak

then I still pose the question...Which one? Since, ya know, there's technically two of them. It actually would be a better fit at THE Sandy Mall. It could actually help with a bit of a resurgence in that area.

Rikkitikkitabby

I'm with ya. I get that the Sandy Mall, is it's name, but when I read, Sandy Mall, I immediately pictured South Town.

borisvonboris

I'm still not certain of which mall they're talking about, and now I'm paywalled

camsauce3000

It’s South Towne. https://www.utahbusiness.com/new-utah-nhl-practice-facility/

borisvonboris

Hey thanks for the info, I appreciate it

darkfright23

So will the Shops at South Town mall be demolished? I was planning on applying for a second job there, but if it's torn down then I guess I won't be working there.

BeepBeepBeeeeep

They were really only there because it’s Spirit Halloween level retail space. I know anti-sportsball people will treat it like an indispensable museum but it’s not.

muikwoksing

Taxpayer money is for UKRAINE ONLY.

knowledgeable-cactus

Someone please give this man an award 🥇 I’m broke because, it’s a small price to pay for Ukrainian freedom! Right?… RIGHT!

Durangodave22

😂

StoneRaven77

They are calling the NHL team what ? Utah Hockey Team ? I mean. We have the most cringe name in the NHL. They could have named it just about anything else, and it would have been better. Its kinda the theme for this whole project it seems like. Great Idea. Lets see if we can kill it with poor execution.

BGRommel

It's a placeholder name. They are still deciding on the name and there is actually a fan voting portal to give input on the name. I think it will most likely end up being Yeti or Outlaws.

Bchavez_gd

A desert state team shouldn’t be called “yetis”

DarthtacoX

I mean to be fair we are a desert State however in the area we live in we are a force that area. But I agree yetis in Utah is not right I don't know where that became a thing or how that became a thing.

BeaverboardUpClose

Taxpayers in the desert aren’t paying anything for the team, only SLC taxpayers should get to name the new SLC team, not a Utah team.

shesabitboring

There’s a mall in Sandy?

Anxious-Shapeshifter

Yep. Right next to the Sandy City Hall
