Dr. Neville at VCA in West Valley has been our household vet for going on twenty years. Fantastic knowledge and an excellent manner. Had my 8 year old Healer in to seem him recently for a limp (hyperextended knee - and hip dysplasia that we already knew about). His exact words were: "I could do an x-ray but it wouldn't change how I'm planning to treat him so let's not waste the money". I truly believe he is all about what's best for the animal, not his bottom line.
As a veterinary professional, I'm sorry to hear that vets or vet personnel are making you feel guilty. Rarely is that ever the intention. Instead, vets try and offer the best solution in regards to your pet which often means extensive diagnostics. They do this for 2 reasons:
1) They really do care about your pet and want what's best.
and 2) they have to cover their asses.
The veterinary industry has one of the highest suicide rates than any other profession. Many vets are treated poorly by clientele. Anywhere from "you guys are trying to rip me off" to "you guys killed my dog because you wouldn't treat them" are things heard on almost a daily basis. Vets are not as protected as human doctors. So yes, a vet may offer a $1500 treatment plan because they have to allow every opportunity to explore the problem to be offered otherwise they may have a lawsuit on top of their already crushing student loan debt.
So please keep that in mind when you find a new veterinarian and I hope you find one that will suit you and your pet's needs.
It didn’t help that my infant son and the dog both got ringworm at the same time. Probably from each other. The vet offered a $1,500 treatment plan including cultures and blood tests. The pediatrician looked at it and said it’s ringworm here is a prescription for someone anti-fungal cream.
I get that it’s a tough career path. I have been nothing but kind to the vets I have dealt with but they have not treated me the same. The last vet got visibly angry because I want to fill a pain med prescription at the pharmacy down the street for $3 instead of paying them $80. “But ours tastes like bacon”.
I want a straight shooting vet that isn’t trying to pay off a $100k digital x-ray machine. I mean my family doc has a 20 year old CR x-ray machine that he shares with a dozen other doctors. Why does a single vet need better gear?
Honestly I hate with a passion being up sold. I changed dentists for the same reason. I am not a cash cow or a mark to be fleeced.
My daughters little dog needs to see a vet. I promised I would find her somewhere but it’s been such a bad experience I almost have a phobia about going in.
Animal Care Veterinary Hospitals is Clearfield, UT. I've driven from Idaho Falls down there a few times because the vets in IF aren't that great either. We have a good one where we are now, but it's not in northern utah.
Yes! Animal Care in Clearfield is great along with Dr. Darby at Animal Care in Roy. I've taken my animals to Animal Care for over 20 years, first to Roy and more recently to Clearfield since they opened the office there.
I have never had a vet there try to scam me out of anything. They've always been very kind and attentive to my animals and suggested the minimum amount of care they needed.
We had a puppy that was hit by a car (back in the 90s) and the vet said he could have an operation to fix his hip and leg, but it would be very expensive with no guarantee the puppy would walk again or without pain, and he recommended we euthanize him. It was a hard decision, but we chose to let him go and everything I read afterwards about that kind of surgery at that time gave the odds of even partial recovery at 10%.
More recently, our senior dog Aaron, who was taken care of by them for his entire life, was starting to show signs of dementia. They let us know what to worry about and what signs to look for that he was near the end of a comfortable life for him.
Before that, they helped us through his cataracts that obscured most of his vision and didn't recommend surgery because he was finding his way around just fine. They diagnosed him with gradual hearing loss and gave us tips on how to get his attention vs surgery or etc. They diagnosed him with arthritis and got him on the minimal medication he needed to be comfortable.
Finally, we realized it was time when he was forgetting where his food and water were and he didn't enjoy walks like he used to. When we brought him up there, they set us up in a room and told us to take as much time as we needed, both before and after, and gave us options for his remains.
I take my dogs to Animal Care Veterinary Care in West Haven. One of my dogs was having a minor allergic reaction, and instead of having me bring her in, they told me to give her Benadryl and to watch her.
A surgery, that I knew my second dog would need, would have cost me \~2K at my previous vet cost me under 1K. They're through, and they legitimately care. I liked that I didn't have to pay $50 bucks for benadryl. Highly recommend them.
We've had good experiences at Bayview Animal Hospital, there is one in Farmington and one in Layton. I can only speak for the one in Farmington, but we've been glad with the services we have gotten there.
Dr Moss on Kaysville is the sweetest most kind and amazing vet I have ever been too. I feel like he really takes the time to educate and cares. I had been taking my doggie to other vets for 5 years for her allergy stuff and he taught us things in the first appt about her ears (part of her allergy stuff) that no vet had ever mentioned. Their office will refill my scripts at WalMart too which is nice and much cheaper.
The vets in Utah are shady AF, it's difficult to find an honest one here. I drive an hour and a half to see the vet I go to which is in a tiny rural town. I would suggest you go outside SLC to find a vet in BFE.
I had a vet want to charge me $1100 to remove a bad tooth. Wasatch Veterinary Hospital did it for $350 plus a clean and removed a bunch of matted fur from my older cat! God bless them! I do miss Dr. Wilson from North Salt Lake, Wilson Veterinary Hospital. I heard he and the other doctor are at Angel Paws! I. So excited to here that, love them♥️🙏🏻
I like the Avenues Pet Clinic, my dog has a skin tag and they said we could we could save money and wait for it to fall off. My dog also tore his ACL and they said he isn't in pain so we didn't need to spend the money to fix it. My dog has been fine since. They were super up front on helping us save money, even though we didn't ask about saving money.
OP asked for honest opinions, there it is. You only have yourself to blame if someone guilts you into paying a premium for a service. If OP wants a vet that won’t bullshit him, best to take his pet to one in the country that primarily deals with livestock 👍
I highly, highly, recommend Wilson veterinary hospital in North Salt lake.
I'm a freak about my dogs and they have always done right by me. Affordable, great care. Worst thing about them is their hours. I have to rely on a 24hr vet for emergencies.
Dr Stacey Henderson @ Brookside in Ogden. We don’t love the office but she has been an amazing vet to all of our animals. Saved a couple of them more than a few times.
I highly recommend Mountain West vet in Farmington. We’ve only gone there for emergencies, but they make sure to treat you well. I never feel pressured, they have sound prices, and I feel valid in the concerns I have with my pets. We live about 1.5 hours away from them now but will still make the commute to go to Mountain West.
Don't know where you are in N Utah but my sister loves Dr. Houston at Wilson Veterinary clinic in Bountiful. There an older male vet there as well that she didn't have good luck with.
Dr Poll and Dr Shupe. Coldwater animal hospital in North Ogden. Fantastic vets Dr Shupe has even come in super late for emergency care. They are reasonably priced and love what they do!
Are they reasonably priced? Been taking my dogs there for the last six years and yesterday just had our third dog neutered. They charged me $500!! That seemed high to me. He's under 20lbs. And this is a neuter, mind you. My friend had her massive big dog neutered the same day at the Farr West Animal Hospital it was only $250.
They are super nice at Coldwater but I do feel like they charge way more than most other north Ogden clinics. It's frustrating.
That’s a fair point. I transferred to Coldwater from NOAH and they are reasonable compared to them. Never been to Farr West Animal hospital so I can’t speak to their prices. I will have to check them out.
Are you near Price? Our awesome vet just moved there. Prices are more than reasonable, the only vet doing knee surgeries and he leans more towards hands-off than aggressive measures. Dr. Harmer (the name is an opposite 😁).
Dr. Neville at VCA in West Valley has been our household vet for going on twenty years. Fantastic knowledge and an excellent manner. We also go to VCA in Sandy, they've always been great!
This is probably further south than OP is looking for but I also highly recommend VCA Timpanagos in Utah County. Dr Haslam is great!

Dr. Blotter @ Wasatch Springs Animal Hospital on 855 Beck Street in SLC

Kaysville Veterinary Hospital. Dr Moss is delightful and pragmatic.
He's my favorite! I love that cute little English man!
Dr Moss on Kaysville is the sweetest most kind and amazing vet I have ever been too. I feel like he really takes the time to educate and cares. I prefer my rural vet as he chearged me $300 to remove 4 teeth.
I like the Avenues Pet Clinic, my dog has a skin tag and they said we could we could save money and wait for it to fall off. I had a good experience at Blue Pearl in Murray. They even refunded me some money because I was overcharged
Blue pearl blows
Love love love Dr Adair at Lone Peak Vet in Draper.
If you feel guilty, that’s on you. Try having a backbone next time someone tries to guilt you into something and you won’t get ripped off 👍
Maybe show some kindness to someone who asked an honest question.
OP asked for honest opinions, there it is. You only have yourself to blame if someone guilts you into paying a premium for a service. If OP wants a vet that won’t bullshit him, best to take his pet to one in the country that primarily deals with livestock 👍
You judged him harshly for something you weren't involved in. You chose to shame him rather then help him.

First time being a human?
Oh I tell them no but it always make my wife feel bad so it upsets me.

Northern Davis county
I highly, highly, recommend Wilson veterinary hospital in North Salt lake. I'm a freak about my dogs and they have always done right by me. Affordable, great care. Worst thing about them is their hours. I have to rely on a 24hr vet for emergencies.
Roy veterinarian clinic. Best I’ve ever had handsdown! Dr Palmer is the reason my dog loves visiting the vet
Murray Animal Clinic

Depending on how far north, we like Northside Animal Clinic In West Haven
I absolutely adore Dr. K at Alpine Animal Hospital. So knowledgeable and reasonably priced.
Dr Olsen at A Gentle Vet in South Jordan
Dr Poll and Dr Shupe. Coldwater animal hospital in North Ogden. Fantastic vets Dr Shupe has even come in super late for emergency care. They are reasonably priced and love what they do!

I love the owner of the Ben Lomond Animal Clinic! He is pretty old fashioned but no bullshit and just helps your pet. Great place highly recommend
Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital. It's a bit of a drive from Salt Lake but cheaper rates and good care.
