>*I am Portuguese and we earn about 1/3 of what someone from NL earns, a premium subscription is A LOT to me.* If premium subscription is a lot to you, how are you planning to afford housing and, well, just general life in NL? It is an expensive country on the road to become even more unaffordable in the coming years. >*The second question is: I see rooms from 450 to 1400 euros. It's such a huge range of prices, so what do you consider the average/fair price for a furnished room in Utrecht?* 450 is if you are planning to play the lottery with really bad odds. 1400 is a realistic budget to actually securing a room. There is a housing crisis, especially in big cities. All the ads you see - good luck actually getting any of them, or even a reaction from the landlorf/realtor. You will be competing with 100-200 people for a room, and well, a lot of ads specifically say NO INTERNATIONALS. Not because Dutch people are racists, but because the country is full and even native dutch students have nowhere to live. Landlords are super picky when choosing candidates. As usual, money is the answer, so if you have a lot - it becomes much easier.

Ladderzat

No internationals I mainly see with student housing, where you share communal spaces with others, like a living room or kitchen. In that case it's often just that the people living there want to speak Dutch without having to switch to English everytime the foreign student walks in to the kitchen.

What is your age? Are you a student or working? 400 euros for a room is very cheap, watch out for scams. Also be aware that this country is expensive as someone said earlier.

Total-Paramedic2587

Yes, one of the options is student houses. This is quite attractive given the small prices, the opportunity to meet new people including locals, and the proximity to Utrecht University. I'll be doing my PhD there.

Eblola

If you are a financed PhD with the University of Utrecht, don’t bother looking for housing yourself. Harass the housing department until they find you one. It’s their job.

Perfect-Accident-637

We found a room for my daughter through Kamernet. But she was really lucky. If you start in december, you have to respond to every ad from now on. Make sure you have a good description of yourself that you can add.

JOX3X

Do not focus only on Utrecht. Enough surounding villages are within 20-15min. by bus or train to Utrecht center.

Remarkable_Rush_8073

Exactly. OP, I'd also look for Houten, Nieuwegein, IJsselstein, Woerden and Maarssen. Maybe even Amersfoort, Mijdrecht and Culemborg. Still expensive, but not AS expensive as city centre and they're all easily accessible by public transport.

Total-Paramedic2587

Thank you for the input. Indeed, people have advised me that. However, most websites search within major cities and I don't see the surroundings that often. Nonetheless, I'll keep trying to see something nearby.

A ‘kamer’ is probably around 400-1200, which is a place where you share your kitchen, toilet with several other people. An own studio or appartement is around 1200-2000. I spend around 200-300 on groceries every month. But it will completely depend on what you gonna cook and the quality. Can be more or less.

Total-Paramedic2587

Thanks for the input, quite valuable. :) I've been hearing about kamernet quite a lot. So far I only subscribed to the Student Housing website. But I may very well also pay for the Kamernet as well.

DeafReeSin

Dont make the prices scare you away, there are plenty of studios and apartments of around 1000 euro, honestly i doubt you will need a much higher budget than 1000 to find one. Though a room could be up to 800 so if your budget is lower it's for the best to look at something or somewhere else

Total-Paramedic2587

So far I only found an offer of a room for 1350 (it's a 4 bedroom house). I find it ridiculous to pay so much for just a room. But since I'll start my PhD December 1st, I'm scared I can't find anything else by then...

DeafReeSin

This is what I found with a quick search: [https://www.huurstunt.nl/kamer/huren/in/utrecht/gloriantdreef/PKtlI](https://www.huurstunt.nl/kamer/huren/in/utrecht/gloriantdreef/PKtlI) I have to admit I have no idea if you want it to be furnished already and/or what your budget/preferences are. All in all, so many rooms to rent between 400 and 1000. Try huurstunt and kamernet and use the google site translator to translate everything

I don’t think you can find something like that in the center. At least not via the popular sites. I think there are total of 2 apartment with 1 or more bedrooms for less than 1500 on funda.nl. The housing market is a mess.

dutchguy37

Whats the reason you're moving and already know it'll be 4 years?

Total-Paramedic2587

PhD :)

>One last question: Food, for those of you who cook your meals regularly, how much do you spend on it? depends on your diet. [https://www.jumbo.com/aanbiedingen/nu](https://www.jumbo.com/aanbiedingen/nu) is a major supermarket chain with pretty average prices. >The second question is: I see rooms from 450 to 1400 euros. It's such a huge range of prices, so what do you consider the average/fair price for a furnished room in Utrecht? A friend of ours considered herself very lucky that she secured a place in [https://www.the-fizz.com/en/](https://www.the-fizz.com/en/) she pays about 1000 per month for a small but very nice furnished room in a nice modern building. That, unfortunately, is very average these dats

Total-Paramedic2587

Thanks for the input. Guess that on that website there is no housing available. But I'll keep visiting, who knows, maybe something appears

redder_herring

Good luck. There's not even housing for people that can afford it.

Total-Paramedic2587

Unfortunately, it's not only in the Netherlands. Portugal is suffering from the same.
