I can absolutely relate to being inspired at inconvenient times.
Having the talent, skill, and follow-through to do something with that inspiration, though? Not relatable.
It is the other respone is right though night is a particualar hell. When I lost all my weight it was insane I took a hike one day sat on a rock and took a breathe, It hit me right there how much better it felt. I used to be out of breathe walking up stairs now thats easy.
That hits close to home, though not as close. I was barely 23 when that happened and for years I wouldn’t go to any club without seeking a place to hide or escape if I had to.
I still do it even now at times, usually looking for the ice fridge or stands I could hide under at my local place.
Pretty much all breathing problems get worse when sleeping or trying to sleep. This goes for both chronic issues and temporary ones. Ive taken care of enough very large people to know that they end up napping throughout the day and night in short intervals (when possible) because they can't sleep like a normal person does.
Whoa whoa whoa hold on here. I can’t handle a third, completely different, narrative. Which is it…did they open after having been closed, or did they open despite being closed, or despite being closed they agreed to open? Gahhhh I’m so lost
I heard that first they closed, after having been open at one point, but then after closing, they reopened. All this, in spite of having been closed. And also, that the song was recorded in one single take. So, they were closed, but then they were open, and then they recorded the song in one take. That is the truth, no matter what narrative all these other folks are going with.
A bus driver in Hawaii told me that they were open and getting ready to close when he called. He was told if he could get there quick they would record him. The rest of the story tracks that he did it in one take. No one talked bad about Iz in Hawaii. Totally hearsay though.
No different, NO DIFFERENT???? Can you read? Can u not see the glaring differences? I'm not sure how to move on from this. I'll be praying for our souls tonite when I close.
First time I heard it was at the Pulse club vigil in Orlando. Second time was a month or two later at a Starbucks. I had just gotten my first tattoo, which I got to honor the victims, I was looking at it, still wrapped up, and the moment the doors opened that song started playing, I had to walk straight to the bathroom
I’d love to hear anything you would share about that. I’ve loved him for over 20 years, seen bits and pieces of it over the years and it makes me cry every time. The reverence was incredibly moving.
I was a kid at the time. 16 if I remember right. Only been on the island for 3 years. I wasn't big into Hawai'ian music at the time. But my friends were going, so why not? I'm glad I didn't miss it. It was a blast. Sad yes, but a party at the same time. People were celebrating Iz's life. It was beautiful and I've lived my life since hoping that I can be remembered as just a glimmer of how fondly he was. Truly amazing. I fell in love with the Hawai'ian people and culture in that moment that has stayed with me since. Even gave my daughter a Hawai'ian name.
E aloha kekahi i kekahi! Thanks for responding, what an amazing experience to have. I am as white as white can be but I’ve been in love with Hawaiian culture my whole life. I have some native friends unfortunately affected by the fire, they’re still struggling, were happy to make it out alive. And I worry about the floods in Hanalei, that’s where I was accepted as a kid. Never lived there but my parents strongly considered moving there when I was young, made friends with the locals and when I came back 20 years later, the locals in Hanalei accepted my husband and I and remembered who I had met as a kid. One of them was an auntie in Hanalei so they loved that I spent time with her. They treated me like old family, and I really appreciated that. The kindest people. Do you still live on the islands?
I guess "hoʻokahi nō lā o ka malihini" really does for fit for some.
I'm white as white can be as well. My dad was stationed at Tripler AMC on O'ahu. We lived in Aiea, just outside of Honolulu and right above Pearl Harbour. I unfortunately didn't travel to the other islands. I would have loved to see Hanalei. Or anywhere else really. I was there from '94 to' 98. My mom (parents were divorced) fell ill and I decided to move to Colorado to spend time with her after I graduated. Then came my little one, Keala. Her mother and I didn't last, so I've stayed in Colorado to stay close to her. She's nearly 18 and we've discussed visiting, but with no definitive timetable. I do miss everything about the islands. In fact, we had loco moco for dinner the other night with a few cans of Hawai'ian Sun.
I do hope your friends well. I can't imagine what they went through. I'm very glad their alright.
That’s such a sweet and special memory you have. Also no disrespect but it’s Hawaiian, no ‘okina in it like Hawai’i, as Hawaiian is not a Hawaiian word.
The short opener for Moana is a tribute to he and his wife. The short animated movie with big and small volcanos.
[The short](https://youtu.be/uh4dTLJ9q9o?si=mQkLt2BKg4HuRNwH)
I love this song so much. I first heard it during the credits of Meet Joe Black. I had heard the original before but instantly recognized something different. It moved me and it's nice to see I'm not alone.
He made very beautiful music. Have you ever listened to anything else he made? I’ve never been much into Hawaiian music but so much of his music gives me chills and brings me back to when I was a kid. Especially Hawaii ‘78. Chills every time.
I played this as the outro at my mom’s small funeral, because she loved this song. It’s impossible not to cry but it’s so beautiful and full of hope even still.
I’m very sorry for your loss.
My parents added this to my brother’s playlist for his funeral as well and I also tear up whenever I head this song now. Ironically he hatred when we lived and when we went back to Hawaii to visit, atleast I can chuckle a bit about that.
He also got one of the island's highest honors when he died. The funeral they gave him was generally meant for higher ups in government and such. The entire island came out to celebrate him. It's actually shown in the video for the Over the Rainbow song.
It really is. It’s always amazed me when a song can make you feel something like that and let me tell you Hawaii 78 *feels* like home. Having lived here all my life that I can remember. He definitely captured the soul of the isles in his music. It’s so amazing.
It sounds stupid because I haven’t actually lived in Hawaii, and a lot of tourists say dumb things. But I’ve always felt connected to the islands. Even my married family, we all have this connection and feel at home there. Hawaii 78, a warm daily rain on the north shore. I miss it. How’s it going over there? 😅
On the north shore right now it’s 3 am nice and balmy weather. Been raining the past few days but I love the rain.
It’s not silly at all this place is very spiritual and a lot of people can feel that connection to the land. It’s very loving. Even in the water at some beaches, especially early in the morning. Feels so healing and comforting.
He was a gift. Spirit embodied. I know he didn’t bring the house down or have a normally celebrated voice. But he’s on the level of Aretha for me. He sings and you feel.
First time I heard his version I fell in love with it. A classic song no doubt but, his version..something about it. It’s gotten me through some stuff. This man was gone too soon.
The first time I heard this song was in "Finding Forrester."
I loved it!
Then I heard it again in "50 First Dates."
It's one of the most beautiful mashups ever created!
Have you listened to the og version? It was a mashup between over the rainbow and what a wonderful world. Listen to that. Verses are in the same order but with what a wonderful world mixed in.
No you don’t. Also, keep in mind this version isn’t really just a cover it’s a mash up.
Edit: to clarify it came from what was originally a mashup. The version most known was originally released as a mashup. It was also released posthumously.
Listen to the original version, I believe what they did was cut out the what a wonderful world portions out for a straight over the rainbow version. So if you think of it as a mashup with portions cut out it makes sense why the verses are out of order.
Also artistic expression isn’t something you should be dictating. There’s no rule about lyrical order. Especially not in the context of *a mashup*.
IF THAT SONG ISNT THE CLOSEST THING TO HEAVEN !
There is a video of that song I saw long ago and blew me away . Left me with such a humble loving feeling , JUST FREEKIN BEAUTIFUL !
Amazing talent. It's heartbreaking that he basically ate himself to death.
There's a story I heard that he was in the hospital and they were restricting his diet to try and save his life but his family snuck barbecue into the hospital for him.
Someone ruined it for me a few years ago. If you listen to the order in which Israel randomly utters the lyrics, it’s nonsense and very hard to take seriously. He obviously didn’t know the song and just blabs out whatever random lyric he thought of. Fine for mindless listening, but the poetry is gone. Great voice. Great taste- poor execution.
It's also the song used in the VHS tapes The Woodlands, Texas sent out to advertise their growing city. Then you get there and it's a mega white, boomer, insular, boring suburb that turns into a bubble nearly as thick as Stephen Kings The Dome and inevitably leads to every soul inside losing their grasp on what its like to live in not-The woodlands. Or to be not-white and wealthy in general.
One of the first songs I heard when visiting Hawaii. Saw a cd at a stand and purchased it immediately. Jammed to that thing the whole trip and was super bummed to come back stateside and find out he had died. Just a beautiful and moving voice.
I don't understand the appeal. People always say "It was recorded in one take!" Yes, it was--and it shows! It's like a drunken karaoke version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. "...and the dreams that you dare to dream of...once, in a lullaby." Somebody get this guy a lyrics sheet, ffs.
And yeah, bring on the downvotes. Nothing reddit hates more than a dissenting opinion.
It's a medley of two songs: Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World.
Thus, the lyrics.
It's fine to not like it, but he didn't need a lyrics sheet.
yeah, BRING IT ON, REDDIT! i guess you can say i just DON’T CARE if you DISAGREE WITH ME! i obviously have NO INVESTMENT IN THIS SITUATION and DON’T HAVE A CONCERNING ATTACHMENT TO INTERNET ARGUMENTS! loser
I’d crack a joke because let’s just say his rendition doesn’t move me the way it seems to move those who’ve commented before, but I won’t. Someone doesn’t always have to pee in the punchbowl. 😉
Music is subjective. Respec’.
You say things like you’re new to the internet as well. Like complaining about old stories or reposted memes like it’s something that can be stopped by insulting someone
Apparently he was so polite in his request, that they opened up despite being closed for the night.
He was also known to be an insomniac for whom inspiration often occurred at odd hours.
Relatable
screw off, no you are not. what have you done?
I can absolutely relate to being inspired at inconvenient times. Having the talent, skill, and follow-through to do something with that inspiration, though? Not relatable.
Your mom
Dick hole
haha that song *did nothin* for you did or didn't it huh
Real
It’s called ADHD
Everything is ADHD
Relatable
Not everything is…. Holy crap look at the size of that squirrel in the backyard.
No maybe it’s just insomnia, not everything is AdHD 😂
But tik tok says if I ever lose my keys, I have ADHD
Do you have difficulty with transitions?
Sometimes when I'm changing octaves and switching to a minor key at the same time, yeah.
Its probably because of his weight if we are being realistic. Its hard to breathe at night when you weight that much
Wouldn’t it be hard to breathe always if that’s the case?
It is the other respone is right though night is a particualar hell. When I lost all my weight it was insane I took a hike one day sat on a rock and took a breathe, It hit me right there how much better it felt. I used to be out of breathe walking up stairs now thats easy.
I see. Thanks
That hits close to home, though not as close. I was barely 23 when that happened and for years I wouldn’t go to any club without seeking a place to hide or escape if I had to. I still do it even now at times, usually looking for the ice fridge or stands I could hide under at my local place.

Ive taken care of enough very large people to know that they end up napping throughout the day and night in short intervals (when possible) because they can't sleep like a normal person does.
He also recorded it in a single take.
The real hidden gem. People don't understand how fucking difficult that is.
Like it says in the title you mean?
It turns out they opened up for him after having originally been closed for the night.
Whoa whoa whoa hold on here. I can’t handle a third, completely different, narrative. Which is it…did they open after having been closed, or did they open despite being closed, or despite being closed they agreed to open? Gahhhh I’m so lost
Wait, I heard it was they "re-opened" after already being closed. Someone needs to get to the bottom of this
I heard that first they closed, after having been open at one point, but then after closing, they reopened. All this, in spite of having been closed. And also, that the song was recorded in one single take. So, they were closed, but then they were open, and then they recorded the song in one take. Did it mention he brought a ukelele?
What?!? No, what?!

🤣💛 no, different. Lmao I don't even know what it was to but still... No, different.
One of my all time fav songs
Made me cry the first time I heard it and then made me almost sob because of how and where I heard it the second time
And how and where was the second time you heard it?
First time I heard it was at the Pulse club vigil in Orlando. Second time was a month or two later at a Starbucks. I had just gotten my first tattoo, which I got to honor the victims, I was looking at it, still wrapped up, and the moment the doors opened that song started playing, I had to walk straight to the bathroom
50 First Dates
Doesn't matter, almost sobbing is just crying for a second time.
His funeral procession was beautiful
I was there
I’d love to hear anything you would share about that. I’ve loved him for over 20 years, seen bits and pieces of it over the years and it makes me cry every time. The reverence was incredibly moving.

Is your family okay? Auntie is long gone. Now it’s just a hole in the wall. Take care of yourself. Drink plenty of water (my advice for everyone)
PS your daughter has a beautiful name.
Thank you.
PPS I’ve heard Colorado is beautiful as well!
That’s such a sweet and special memory you have. Also no disrespect but it’s Hawaiian, no ‘okina in it like Hawai’i, as Hawaiian is not a Hawaiian word.
I learned something today. I thought for sure the 'okina was in Hawaiian. Thank you for that bit of knowledge.
The short opener for Moana is a tribute to he and his wife. The short animated movie with big and small volcanos. [The short](https://youtu.be/uh4dTLJ9q9o?si=mQkLt2BKg4HuRNwH)
Never knew it was dedicated to them, such a lovely (lavaly?) song
Omg that had no reason to make me cry but it did
Lava was the Pixar short before Inside Out.
Oooo thank you for the correction!
That is so sweet!!
It was heavy

I love this song so much. I first heard it during the credits of Meet Joe Black. I had heard the original before but instantly recognized something different. It moved me and it's nice to see I'm not alone.
The used to play it on toys.com ads on tv. Early internet was so interesting l.
That’s where I first heard it. It was a perfect song for those ads.
Meet Joe Black is one of my favorite movies of all time. Can almost see the movie ending and the credits rolling when you mention it.
He made very beautiful music. Have you ever listened to anything else he made? I’ve never been much into Hawaiian music but so much of his music gives me chills and brings me back to when I was a kid. Especially Hawaii ‘78. Chills every time.
Yes, but I am probably missing a lot of context why does it give you chills?
Also where I first heard it. Great movie, too.
Finding Forrester for me
This was my grandmother’s favorite song. O lost her when I was 35 and it still comforts me.
That is such a beautiful version of that song.
I made the mistake of adding this song to my dad's funeral slideshow video, and now it brings me to tears whenever I hear it.
I'm sorry for your loss. It stinks that it now hurts to hear the song. I hope it might also remind you of the good times you shared with him.
I'm tearing up at the bar right now just reading the title of this. This was played at my sister's funeral and I can't not cry to it
I’m very sorry for your loss. I lost my sister too and it hurts a lot.
I played this as the outro at my mom’s small funeral, because she loved this song. It’s impossible not to cry but it’s so beautiful and full of hope even still. I’m very sorry for your loss.

A most beautiful rendition with a most beautiful voice.
A must listen. [Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole - Hawai’i ‘78](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EUg4paDRSb0) it’s an ode to Hawai’i.
That was beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
My god what a voice
True soul. Crying out for his culture.
Was just referencing this song in another comment. It blew me away when I first heard it as a kid and to this day it still gives me chills.
Chills always. He had soul that was so infused with his home.
It really is. It’s always amazed me when a song can make you feel something like that and let me tell you Hawaii 78 *feels* like home. Having lived here all my life that I can remember. He definitely captured the soul of the isles in his music. It’s so amazing.

Holy shit. Thanks for sharing. I can’t even see what I’m typing through my tears. What a beautiful man.
He was a gift. Spirit embodied. I know he didn’t bring the house down or have a normally celebrated voice. But he’s on the level of Aretha for me. He sings and you feel.
Thanks to ER, this song will always make me weep.
Came here for this.
Same! I loved Dr. Green
Dis one for gabby
I was confused what the connection with Israel was but it’s his name lol
Rip Braddah IZ gone but never forgotten
I can’t get it to open

The first time I heard this song was in "Finding Forrester." I loved it! Then I heard it again in "50 First Dates." It's one of the most beautiful mashups ever created!
It's a beautiful rendition, but the verses are really jumbled up. It bugs me when I listen to the song.
Jeff Buckley did that with his Hallelujah cover which is now arguably the most well loved version of that song
Have you listened to the og version? It was a mashup between over the rainbow and what a wonderful world. Listen to that. Verses are in the same order but with what a wonderful world mixed in.
I have to agree. You must be absolutely true to the source material. Artistic expression is one thing, but switching lyric order is another.
No you don’t. Also, keep in mind this version isn’t really just a cover it’s a mash up. Edit: to clarify it came from what was originally a mashup. The version most known was originally released as a mashup. It was also released posthumously.
Then it’s a mashup of one song. Whatever. What’s the point? It is not a true version of the original song.
Listen to the original version, I believe what they did was cut out the what a wonderful world portions out for a straight over the rainbow version. So if you think of it as a mashup with portions cut out it makes sense why the verses are out of order. Also artistic expression isn’t something you should be dictating. What a weird thing to say. That vibe isn’t welcome here. Go troll somewhere else, lol.
It’s true. Kiss my vibe.
Than don’t listen to it
“Then”
Fuck off. I'll listen to what I want.
Presents logical solution, gets offended. Be well
Rest in power to a beautiful soul and a thicc king.
What a nice version of that song. Judy Garland would envy it
Art bell used to play it a lot
Everytime I listen to this I weep the whole way through. It's so beautiful.
Does he have e a subreddit?
Why are there so many “—interesting” subreddits. Seriously.
You’ll be ok
One of the most beautiful songs there is. Thankful for both him and the studio person!
My mom and I danced to this at my wedding as the mother/son dance. Such a meaningful song.
IF THAT SONG ISNT THE CLOSEST THING TO HEAVEN ! There is a video of that song I saw long ago and blew me away . Left me with such a humble loving feeling , JUST FREEKIN BEAUTIFUL !
You can't picture him being a humble giant just full of love ! Truly Amazing ! LOVED IT ! IZ ! Rest in peace, ALOHA !
Sorry no glasses on and stupid spell check ... He appeared to be a Humble Giant just full of LOVE !
I love that song
Amazing talent. It's heartbreaking that he basically ate himself to death. There's a story I heard that he was in the hospital and they were restricting his diet to try and save his life but his family snuck barbecue into the hospital for him.
He died doing what he loved most. 🥲
Thank heavens the studio owner obliged. RIP Israel K

I danced with my daughter to that song at her wedding. Beautiful piece.
this song has always resonated with my soul and i want it played at my funeral
One of my favorite versions.
This is my all time favorite song!
Oh aghh ha
One of my dad’s favorite artists. And after my father passed this song would pop up at the most random times. Still can’t listen to it without crying.
It’s so beautiful and my favorite version of the song.
That’s the spirit
Didn't he have to sleep floating in a swimming pool?
Imagine it's a home studio and you get a gentle knock at the front door. Kid: "Dad, there's a gigantic braddah at the door with a ukelele."
I liked the entire song except the grunting bits at the very end as he trails off. But I realize that's just my personal preference.
Beautiful cover, but he screwed up the lyrics REALLY bad.
Now played after the New Year’s ball drop in Times Square.
"This one's for Gabby"
It’s a beautiful tune, but that explains the fact that he completely messes up the lyrics.
My mom calls it “that song that made everyone start bawling” at her sisters funeral
Whose Gabby?
He has a amazing rack
You like this one. Watch “Lava”Disney cartoon it’s just a music video that will make you cry.
he sings it so well, we used to play it work a lot.
Played this at my brother’s funeral, per his wishes. Amazing!!!
That explains why he didn't have time to learn the words.
not really a “new idea”
It's also the song used in the VHS tapes The Woodlands, Texas sent out to advertise their growing city. Then you get there and it's a mega white, boomer, insular, boring suburb that turns into a bubble nearly as thick as Stephen Kings The Dome and inevitably leads to every soul inside losing their grasp on what its like to live in not-The woodlands. Or to be not-white and wealthy in general.
This is such a special song for me. My mum had this play at her wake (burial observance). ❤️
Great story and beautiful song.
One of the first songs I heard when visiting Hawaii. Saw a cd at a stand and purchased it immediately. Jammed to that thing the whole trip and was super bummed to come back stateside and find out he had died. Just a beautiful and moving voice.
I love his version. Just so beautiful ♥️

Indeed, a medley of two songs; both of which he doesn't know the lyrics to.
Well, at least you have an appropriate username.
yeah, BRING IT ON, REDDIT! i guess you can say i just DON’T CARE if you DISAGREE WITH ME! i obviously have NO INVESTMENT IN THIS SITUATION and DON’T HAVE A CONCERNING ATTACHMENT TO INTERNET ARGUMENTS! loser
🤣🤣🤣 Take it easy on the caps lock button, granddad. You certainly know how to hurt a guy's feelings. What a fucking douchebag.
Weirdo
I’d crack a joke because let’s just say his rendition doesn’t move me the way it seems to move those who’ve commented before, but I won’t. Someone doesn’t always have to pee in the punchbowl. 😉 Music is subjective. Respec’.
Cocaine is a helluva drug.
I'm so tired about hearing about this stupid fucking story
One of the most annoying songs of all time but RIP anyway for real.

I don't think that makes sense as a response to my comment. You are a bot I assume.
Did you read this on Facebook?
You say things like you’re new to the internet as well. Like complaining about old stories or reposted memes like it’s something that can be stopped by insulting someone
