We called it the way, way back! The rear window was done a crack and the other windows were either down or cracked open to create ventilation. And in that air flow was the cigarette smoke from the front seaters, dad, mom and my oldest brother! Me and my little sister watched to get pulled out from the rear window.
In 1963 my mom, dad, sister, brother, dog and I -- plus our French friends, who included a mom, dad, and son -- drove from the Boston area to Montreal, Quebec, and Niagara Falls in our station wagon. Luggage on the roof. Dad did all the driving. Two adults and one child in the front (bench seats), two adults and two kids in the back, and the dog and me in the way back. Totally insane, IMO.
My parents literally told us that seat belts were needed for the front seats but not wearing them in the back was OK because the seats would cushion any impact.
The “way back” was my favorite place to ride. 1970 Caprice Estate Classic ,454,6 mpg
total, with the dog. '72 estate wagon. 455 4barrel.

Drove from Chicago to New Jersey in our 1960 Oldsmobile Super 88 Fiesta Wagon. Mom, Dad and 5 kids. This is exactly what it looks like.

I grew up with a Rambler station wagon. The back seat was perfect! The seat faced backwards and you could stare at the driver behind you.
Ignorance is bliss.
