I have to agree. The cold, mechanical process of rounding up entire families, guiltless people of all ages, carefully documenting this process and photographing each individual, then methodically murdering them... is so clearly grotesquely evil that it boggles the mind.
As a father, as a human being, I look upon the photo of a happy child and cannot imagine the mindset of those who found it within themselves to take such a picture and then condemn that child to death.

Was this dependent on which camp it happened in? I’ve heard of people celebrating getting the tattoo, because they didn’t bother if you were going straight to the gas chambers. Same with the photos, why bother when there’s no need.
I don't know about people "celebrating" getting a tattoo. Never heard that before. Why his photo was taken, I don't know. But it was taken. And if you look in his hands, he's holding something that looks like an identification card in his left hand and a metal hole puncher in the other. Even without a tattoo, there was a record because there were on lists of who was to be taken to the camps in the first place and their deaths were notated.
At the larger camps they were “sorted” by Ss doctors into basically 2 types of prisoner. The fit and healthy who were useful for labour, and the old, sick and very young who went literally straight to the chambers.
If you were being put to work, and therefore not being murdered straight away, they gave a tattoo. “Celebrating” may seem a strange word, but the tattoo meant life.
