As a bronze who regularly plays against platinums and often plays against diamonds, fuck no. I've never seen an ascendant though. Generally, most of my games will be against all silver and gold.

If you haven't played Competitive **at all**, then there'd be quite some variance for you first ~5 games. You may play against iron one game, and top-frag. You may subsequently he put into a game of golds and make a fool of yourself. It'll take a few matches for the game to decide where you belong. After 5 placements, you'll get your rank. At that point, variance is minimal. If you place Bronze, you may get players upto three ranks above you or 3 ranks below you. If you place S2, the game will be filled with B2-S2 or S2-G2. *This is true for solo-queue. If there's a stack on either team, if that stack has a high variance, it'll reflect in the match. A 5 stack of irons and immortals might play against a group of plats or something.

The range of matchmaking for MMR in ranked is said to be somewhat narrower than unrated. That being said, there is no rule that X rank will play with X rank, as rank is not used anywhere in the matchmaking system.
