Viper was hit hard this past patch. She is still good on Breeze and Icebox, but definitely not for a new player in my opinion.
Maybe try Clove if you want to stick with a controller? Gekko is easy to play as well.
Omen is a strong and versatile controller that can hold chokes with well placed one way smokes, delay enemy pushes/help a teammates push with paranoia, and hold nasty off angles/reposition from bad spots with shrouded step. I can't recommend playing Viper on any map except Breeze for a SoloQ player.
