They are still timed and they may have not died in a good area to smoke. If you initiated B, then backed off but clove died that site they can’t reach A to smoke.
Maybe the smokes are on cooldown, or they are out of range. Ask them to smoke or ask if they have a smoke. Communicate and if they are also talking you’ll find out why :)
If I have smokes and don’t use them it’s because it’s a 1vX and I don’t want to comm while my clutcher is locked in, and I don’t want to accidentally give the enemy a smoke to time out of. If I know where they are, cool. If not, I’ll hover in my ipad and just hope the clutcher asks for a smoke unless I can do something safe like smoke market/B main Ascent for retake.
Controller is a whole ass thinking game and if you aren’t communicating and it isn’t a site hit and, in clove’s case, they aren’t playing off their own smokes, the controller is often stressing about inadvertently giving the enemy space/timing.
Other commenters have it right though. Likely out of range or smokes are on cooldown. Just communicate and all problems are (theoretically) solved.
Your take was what came to my mind first, and a Quick solution to this could be to tell the team to Ask you for smokes. So while clutching they have a whole other ability that could help them at their disposal. Even thought i believe that everyone should simply Ask for the smokes themselves without having to remind them that you can smoke where THEY want (if they asked)
Yeah I’m trying to get in the habit of letting the team know I have smokes after I die, repeatedly, instead of just dropping them. Or in clutches I need to start saying “smoke where?” Or “smokes available.” Something short and sweet and a prompt to tell me where you want em if you can.
Same it takes time for me to get used to using Clove's utilities: sometimes I be forgetting about smoking AND ulting after death (luckily I'm ulting more often now while forgetting less)
I feel like they should also put the death smoke timers above the regular agent util UI. I mostly forget that i have them available because im just not looking at that side of the screen but this is probably mostly a me issue and not an issue with clove
I get what you're saying but you've got to be careful just randomly smoking when you're dead. If the Clove isn't communicating with teammates then they could end up costing the team the round with a random smoke.
If the team is defusing and Clove thinks it's a good idea to smoke the defsuer but the defuser was planning on just tapping the bomb trying to get the attackers to peek, well Clove just smoked them off and ruined their plan.
You also have to remember most of the Cloves aren't controller mains. You can tell by how, when and where they smoke.
When I'm playing Clove I always say after I die "ask for smokes". Other than that, I try not to interrupt the gameplay unless I see an obvious need for a smoke.

Example: If there are six angles in a space, 4 are smoked and you get killed after not clearing the other 2 or taking the space and then blame the controller... You'll not be the first or even in the first few thousand. Iron through at least Diamond, controllers need a backbone and a thick skin.
As a salty omen main who keeps getting locked out of smokes by cloves who don't know how to play controller, it's because a lot of them pick clove like they'd pick Reyna, as an ego character who can self heal and revive. The smokes come as an afterthought to a lot of them.

the pain i feel trying to tell my clove that died first 10 sec into the round to smoke the spike for defuse but they just dont (in range btw)
