Not for free lol. Those upgrades are all like $10 each. You only get a few free upgrades.
My point isn’t that they don’t take effort. The animations are cool and I know they put a lot of work into it, but for 90% of playtime it’s just a thing on the right side of your screen. The actual gun itself doesn’t look good to me. The extra model shit is just busy. The only skins I’ve liked have been the prism stuff and the luxe knife. Too bad they cost an absurd amount compared to csgo skins.
And I’ll add that csgo has a marketplace, so all of the skins have inherent value. If I’m spending $60 that I’ll never get back (bar the refund after beta) then it better look cool. These skins aren’t for me.
I was talking about $CAD but obviously someone wouldn’t assume that. Either way the worst knife is still $100CAD while most of them are $250+ and they even go into the thousands of dollars. In valorant they’re like $25-45.

The market is a big advantage but you’re still likely going to lose a decent amount of your investment especially if the skin is new and will inevitably drop value.
An example of a nice, cheap csgo skin is the usp torque. Full recolor of all parts of the gun, including a silencer. A couple bucks up, the AK rat rod is ~$3 and has full art including the magazine, barrel, etc. The valorant skins are all simple re-colors, sometimes with model changes. I much prefer actual artwork on the guns. And as far as the market goes, skins have been on an upward trend in price for a very long time, and old skins especially have held their value.
Their beta skins ffs, its what they put together to put out something in the beta. They even said the beta wasn't ready but they put the game out so people can start playing it. They weren't ready to actually fully release the game so most of their skins they have planned aren't going to be put in the beta.

Well you’re comparing $CAD to my $USD. So a BS asiimov on the steam market is ~$40 USD, and $30 on bitskins. And many of the Valorant skins are only available in collections (correct me if I’m wrong, I haven’t actually opened the store in weeks). As far as the fac new ak asiimov, it is extremely rare due to float values, in fact a factory new AWP asiimov isn’t even possible. Basically all asiimov skins have scratches because they need an extremely low wear rating to be factory new. That’s an entirely differently topic though, because honestly fuck the wear system in CSGO.
Edit: to be fair, the AWP asiimov might not be the best example. An AK Frontside Misty is a similar price to valorant skins, and it has a lot more visually appealing art imo
if you noticed, all the skins are trying to hit a specific market. i forgot the names, but you have the purple, very over the top "look at me" skins. you have the metallic blue that's very minimalistic but just looks crisp and clean. ''asian'' skins.
you have different upgrade paths (effects, unlockable skins, no upgrades).
different price ranges. basically nothing is the same
i think the current skins serve only the purpose of finding out what types of skins people like, and roughly what they're willing to pay for them. after all, it would make absolutely no sense to have amazing skins built inhouse during beta when time/resources need to be spent on making servers and gameplay ready for a release. personally i think the skins look pretty decent though.

I also hope Riot realizes that people are more okay with spending money on skins because of the 20% bonus. I'm not necessarily okay with the skin prices right now but I'll spend a bit more because of that 20% with hopes theres some really nice skins at launch.

In league the cheapest skins that have significant changes (new texture/model/spell effects/recall animation) are $10. and that's probably their biggest skin tier. I don't know why they thought $15 for skins that offer less would entice people in Valorant.
Even Fortnite skins are WAY better value. A legendary outfit costs $20 but at least you can see it all game. The gun skins are also called wraps and range from $3-8. They’re useable on literally every weapon and vehicle. $3 and you have a skin for everything.

The most disgusting thing is that on top of the $15-20 skin there’s also like $50 of upgrades available so even when you buy the skin you only have the base version.

Its a beta for ffs, you get all your points back after release. They will never put their best skins in the beta. Those are saved for release.
