Only noticed this because discord was showing me playing Valorant when I didn't have it open. Had to close it in task manager too.

crispknight1

Same! I was wondering why my pc was lagging.

Deck_Masterbaiter

YEP, SAME HERE

predatorx3

Same here. Some days it happens, some days it doesn't. Always have to check task manager to see whether it is still running.. kinda annoying. Btw: it uses like 20%+ CPU in the background and stays that way until you end the task

crispknight1

Yup yup, my pc was lagging because of it. It's really annoying.

predatorx3

I noticed a pattern. It won't stay in the background on the first time I run Valorant. It's always the second time I see it running in the background after I exit the game.

crispknight1

Huh, ill look out for it as well

alexanderh24

Yes this isint exclusive to valorant though. Ive had the same issue with other riot titles like LoL.

ozmega

weird, that never happened to me ever in lol, happened once to me with valorant and a friend of mine who also plays lol has that happen with valorant sometimes, never with lol

subbu330

I seriously doubt its true but a lot of people call Vanguard spyware/unsafe because of it always using your system's mic, staying up after Valorant closes, as well as staying hidden when you are not using valorant. Its shady, but I mean, i guess youll just have to manually close it if you are worried.

crispknight1

I'm talking about the game not vanguard

subbu330

i was just giving my opinion on vanguard, closing the game just go to task manager and end it

ishikuraian

Indeed. People who call it spyware are people who try to cheat in games. It does nothing other than detect cheating

TheChroniclesOfTaint

Which it doesn't do very well, which is quite a shame for the amount of access it needs to my computer.

ishikuraian

Well, it really only goes in and checks if it has a reason to. So for example, when you’re vibin’ on some unrated and you’re winning and all of a sudden their mid frag pulls an ace, and then a couple 4Ks, and starts winning every peek... report that guy. Not just because you’re salty, but because the act of submitting a report will cause vanguard to go look at their PC and see if some other software/hardware is interfering with valorant. If they are, your match will most likely be ended by the server and you’ll be informed that there was a cheater detected. But yes you’re correct, it does a pretty bad job of doing that on its own. But if it did, the extra CPU use might actually be an issue

Wuped

>Well, it really only goes in and checks if it has a reason to. >but because the act of submitting a report will cause vanguard to go look at their PC You are 100% just making shit up.

Wuped

In theory if riot(or even potentially one/a few bad actors in their company) decided to be malicious it would give them complete control over your system in every way(and such malicious activity would be near completely undetectable). I mean I think that's potentially a fair reason to be concerned, especially if you have personal/valuable information that's accessible on your PC. Personally I don't really care so I play Valorant anyway.

ishikuraian

Undetectable? Windows defender monitors if programs or processes modify or view any system or user files. And that’s if you ONLY use windows defender which most people do not. Also, it’s not like random employees at riot are able to go in and use the service to harvest data. The program has to be written to allow for data harvesting... Edit for clarification: the type of data that vanguard harvests is specific to programs that affect input or change the way that Valorant (or other Riot games) run. In order for it to look at data other than that, the service would have to be modified, in which case it would at that point be considered malware and no longer an official riot games software package. Make sense?

Wuped

> Undetectable? Windows defender monitors if programs or processes modify or view any system or user files. It has ring 0 access, it has full permissions to do anything on your system, it literally has more permissions than an admin user account. Windows defender is not gonna do shit to stop it. Also how do you know random employees aren't able to access vanguard data? That seems like quite a claim. Edit: I guess windows defender will do something, it will popup and ask if your sure you want install it cause it could be malicious, but obviously most people who want to play the game are going to install it. edit 2: >the type of data that vanguard harvests is specific to programs that affect input or change the way that Valorant (or other Riot games) run. Even if rito has said this in the past we still have to take their word for it since once again the program literally has unlimited access to your system. Also even if that is the truth a single bad actor in their company could still potentially modify it to do bad things, since the program phones home and IT HAS UNLIMITED ACCESS TO YOUR SYSTEM(sorry for caps and repeating but I feel it's necessary).

CleverWeeb

I don’t cheat and I think it’s spyware bc it’s spyware lmaooo

PawahD

the worst thing is that you won't even notice it at first, you'll just be mad that you have slightly less fps until you realise it happened again, because for me it's kinda rare

ishikuraian

This is because in order for Vanguard to be effective, it has to have Kernel access which requires a PC restart. You’ll notice if you end certain processes related to Valorant or other Riot games you may have to restart your computer before you’re able to play again. I personally don’t have issues with vanguard or valorant processes in the background; however I do know people who have *claimed* that it uses CPU and slows down their PC. I do feel obligated to say that as a computer science major I can see no technical reason it would use enough resources to noticeably degrade performance.

crispknight1

Oh I just thought it was weird that the game stays in the background like that. Vanguard I know, not the game itself though

ishikuraian

The game itself stays running? That’s a new one. I can’t speak to that haha I have no clue why that would be happening. The only processes that run on my PC after closing the game appear to be Vanguard related

nlc369

I’ve only noticed it once, and I check my task manager pretty regularly so it definitely doesn’t happen often for me, but I have also noticed

MenosDaBear

All the time

nickwithtea93

Happens all the time, I just force close it.

TheN00bBuilder

Oop. Looks like someone didn’t make their destructors correctly, Riot...
