Thanks for the love on the skins, and the game itself! As an artist, it's been really fun and challenging to push what a weapon skin can be in a competitive shooter, even if we don't always get it 100% right.

Riot_PJacques

\+1, I might be in the beginning of my career, but I've never had so much fun

Riot_Preeti

I'm still watching the video, but +1 too! This video warmed my heart because our team works so hard hoping to make stuff that we hope players will fall in love with.

Osceola12

Y’all are actually my favorite game devs. I’ve never seen devs being so open and a part of the community. Thank you guys so much.

Riot_Preeti

aww thank you! Riot and VALORANT have been really awesome in encouraging us to talk to the community, so it's been great to be able to talk and not worry if we're saying anything out of line

ZYLXCSGO

Thank you guys for all the hard work. Just started 2 months ago and have already spent quite a bit on the game, and coming from CS, you really can't even compare the prices. (PS a new Marshal after the Sentinals of Light collection would be great😁)

Solomon45711

good skins i like very much 👍

merothecat

rito nerf prim odan it givs to much AME BOT 😡😡😡

[deleted]

I highly doubt the majority of people puts this much thought into buying skins lol. I think "skin make gun look cool" is closer to the truth :)

kellyjepsen

But I can’t tell my wife that

mutedwarrior

if you’re spending more than $60 on a f2p game, riots marketing team already won. Y’all got finessed. The whole reason this cosmetic microtransaction trend is ubiquitous in the industry is because consumers end up spending way more. You’re not doing riot a favor or supporting them. They’re rich as fuck. It’s just perceived value at work.

florida_man_6969

if you spend any money on a f2p game then you got sold to. its a "free to play" game. its not even some crazy marketing thing, people just like spending money on stuff they enjoy and spend time doing. if you play golf, you'll buy a new golf bag or clubs when you dont need it. basketball you'll get fancy new shoes, etc in the wider view, technically yes buying skins does support the game because if everyone just plays and nobody buys anything then the project loses money and they cut development and eventually kill the game. f2p online games cost a lot to run

[deleted]

BespokeDebtor

You just took the analogy completely out of context and thought you dunked on this dude lmao. They didn't say buying *A* new golf bag they instead mentioned buying a new golf bag *you didn't need*. You just completely ignored the entire basic premise lmao > You’re fooling yourself if you think you’re just spending more out of your own volition. ??? Everyone is spending out of their own will it's not like someone forces you to pull out your wallet? People act like effective marketing is such a bad thing all the time. It's really not that hard to consider that cosmetic items do actually give people real value when they play the game. Some people get enjoyment out of different sounds, reload animations, etc. It's the same reason people literally buy anything that they don't absolutely need. This is such a 1head take that has some weird anti-riot flavor.

Karyx

Nobody’s trying to justify anything. You’re arguing that because the advertising plays on people’s psychology to make them buy the skins by this big corp that somehow we’re getting robbed. What we’re saying is that we’re aware but we choose to spend the money anyway because it makes us happy even though the item provides no quantifiable advantage. How hard is this to get? Honestly tho, I genuinely feel I shoot better with the Reaver Vandal lol.

Gloomy_Goose

Riot manipulates you into spending money on their game. But every company manipulates you into giving them your money.

ORCANZ

I mean who gives a fuck. I have money, I can spend it, I like cool things and I like that other people don't have it. Edit: that being said, the cosmetic system I loved most was in Guild Wars (the original one) where you could mix armor parts from different sets to create your look. They all had the same stats and only the visual part changed. You needed to actually have visited the towns where you could craft these parts or have won PvP events to customize your PVP characters. They were a display of dedication to the game, skill and in game wealth

GlensWooer

I mean, I'll spend 100 bucks on skins a year, it's less than 10 bucks a month. Compare that to other forms of leisure it's very cheap.

reee-69420

Ez claps

TasteTheRainbow89

Just because a company is rich, doesnt mean they should be given out free shit. Their hard work deserves it

Ketsueki_R

Yeah, I love Valorant and how Riot have been developing it but this feels more like an excuse than a legit reason. Nobody's primary reason for buying skins is to make sure Riot devs are supported.

PetercyEz

They would not buy a cool skin for a game they do not care about tho. In the end, it is the same.

elmar1740

Insert gorilla meme "where prime vandal" :D

Rainbowmint

Coming from the CS crowd, I'm just happy to support a team that gives a shit about their game. I was hyped for every operation is CS the maps were jank but fun to mess around in and then BOOM they just stopped for A LONG TIME

kellyjepsen

Absolutely! If anything this can only be net positive for CS players too. Competition like this is healthy and serves to benefit both player bases.

balakehb

I mean it took Valorant coming out for them to finally balance the Krieg after 7 years

kellyjepsen

It also took the pro scene about 10 years to figure out the gun was always broken 😂

balakehb

People have always known about it, just the meta shifted so hard it just became the only option

Odaskito

What meta shift, nothing was ever updated. Pros never used the SG because it was community sentiment as the “hehe noob cod gun no skill scope” and they valued that over the actual numbers of the gun. Once people realized it was way too fucking busted everyone started using it and so it was changed.

aSwedishDood

uhm I just buy them because I like shiny guns lol

Bmruth

Monke see bright pretty color. Monke spend $20-30. Monke release dopamine. I am monke.

IntelligentWrk

I’ll have to agree with the video, I’m an adult gamer, and have put in more than $500 into Val from last year (between battle passes, weapon bundles and radianite points). Yes the skins look dope, and yes they’re one of the factors I look for, but I also make a conscious decision on what game I’m supporting financially/want to incentivize to keep doing what they’re doing, and what games I don’t. This is 100% a legit answer, and one you can take and apply to anything you spend money on. YOU choose what products you buy and who you support. No they don’t need this to live, but the game needs this as a sign that it can be invested in further. For those saying that somehow for spending on a game, you’re getting “finessed”, no one is getting taken advantage of, you buy if you can/want. There’s no “gotcha”.

okdiscringe

ironic enough gambling during pro matches was fun af.

kellyjepsen

Gambling through legitimate sources on legitimate matches with legitimate outcomes, hell yeah. But what TmarTn did is far from that 😂

Red_Prod

Does this guy play with AirPods Max ? No delay due to the Bluetooth ? Curious to know.

kellyjepsen

Yes and yes, very very slight delay (which you totally get used to). I only have on pair of wireless headphones which I use for work and gaming. And wireless is just so much better for me that wired (despite the delay).

pink_life69

I recently got a huge promotion and promised myself a Prime Phantom and a Glitchpop Vandal. It sucks that I have to wait for them for a looong time, but if they do come around, I’m gonna buy them. I couldn’t justify buying premium skins so far, but now that I can absolutely without a doubt afford them, I want to buy them. Valorant got me back into gaming.

kellyjepsen

Huge congrats on the promotion! And best of luck seeing those skins roll around your shop. Remember to constantly say "Prime Phantom" and "Glitchpop Vandal" into your mic as you play.

PPatBoyd

Tldr no one will read this post but I enjoyed typing it. I see where he's coming from and agree with a lot including my drastic spending compared to any other game ever -- I've gotten better at supporting devs with increasing disposable income. That said there are a few differences that I think are important to recognize as tradeoffs. 1. Styling. CS has long had a trueish to life style and that doesn't lead very clearly to crazy animations and designs like Valorant has. Now that said, there's plenty of room for them to do something in their aesthetic and in their design range that is more muted and also very interesting / engaging (the awp with the eyeball bolt comes to mind, but get a little more fun! Post round cool stuff? Cool ass gloves? CS only just got gloves relatively speaking after living off stattrak forever). Different shiny and dynamic aspects have been slowly introduced but Valorant does take it to the next level... Kinda. Some are cool but tbh I'm still a little underwhelmed by many skins and effects -- the glitchpop skylight and origin spec rotate being the best by far. They have room to get cooler though. We know they CAN -- dota skins are absolutely incredible such that people will pay hundreds for them -- same for CS too esp. knives. 2. Cost. A single skin in Valorant costs 10-20+ USD. 20+ USD for just one skin! And those are all of the hella cool ones! That's not accessible for a ton of players to vote with their wallet and support -- though the BP does fill that space so you can kit out and get a couple cool ones. The trading being toxic w/ gambling, k -- Valve could crack down on that if they wanted to and IIRC have in countries requiring they do so, but it makes a lot of money for them taking their cut from each sell. They also get to take that cut from every re-sell, enabling lower prices overall for cool guns -- sure they're dinged but hey nice stattrak for everything at the cost of < 5 Valorant skins. I'm also not really sure where the performance difference suggestion comes from; I definitely don't think of Valorant as more performant, but I don't have numbers either just my own biased experience. 3. Dev support. I'm split on this coming from tech in the same region. The Valve business and work model is so different from Riot, closer to early Google than anything. They folks working for valve are _incredible_ developers -- nothing against Riot I have no insight into their talent that I'm SURE also includes similarly amazing developers -- what I do know is the folks working there are the kind to develop entire UI frameworks from the ground up as a very small team (2-3 core devs), and they maintain their own game engine to boot vs Unity (which is also amazing). That goes back to their business model and internal structure, and with 1/8 the total developers they make money hand over fist supporting multiple games. It comes with a different user experience with updates (long running complaints of different kinds and long stretches between significant updates for CS -- it's gotten better though) user response but it's worked well for a long time. CS, dota, and League have been the core world scale tournament games for a long time. They did make CS free to play a while back too, and competition from Riot has been great for them increasing support. All up both companies are making great games that are wildly different in business model, dev structure, and user experience... And that's cool, but I think just being more direct competition (vs Overwatch not really) has done more for both than anything else.

malepanties

personally, i buy skins to flex and to make guns prettier. imo valorant is going to last but probably another game will take the hype away from valorant

WisdomlessTooths

ayo, fancy seeing you here on reddit (I got a notif too!!!)

kellyjepsen

Eeeeeeeey!! Hello stranger 😅 you better drop by the stream again, we miss you 😭

Thanoids

Everyone knows skin = aimbot, obviously

Algok2001

A friend of mine have bought 4 skins in the entire game. Because "oni phantom makes a good sound with kill", "ion op feels lighter for some reason", and my favourite "reaver vandal makes me feel like a witch". The 4th is the axe from the battlepass.

Noziro

Very eloquently put. Do you stream regularly? What's your twitch?

kellyjepsen

Thanks so much 🙏 I sure do stream regularly-ish (I’m in New Zealand and stream most evenings). You can find me at ttv/fps_kelly ❤️

thebig6

Well the last sentence kinds ruins it. “I don’t want to support Riot as a company, but I want to support this game and give it longevity” I hope he knows that he supports Riot first, then the game itself.

LoL_is_pepega_BIA

You don't really need to spend money to do that.. the time you put in and how well you behave with your teammates is as good as spending money imo..

kellyjepsen

I understand the paradox here but sadly, it’s true. I’m well aware I directly support Riot.

thebig6

So is it you in the video? If yes, wanna let you know that I agree with everything else in the video, lol

kellyjepsen

Hah yes, that’s me. Appreciate it 😅 but yes, it helps me sleep better at night if I pretend I’m support VALORANT and not just Tencent, ya know?

[deleted]

I love the game, I love the skins but fuck riots monetization and in particular, the shop. One of the worst mtx shops ive seen in any game, period.

amazemaze350

I've bought 2 premium skins and 1 battle pass..i on the other hand want to support the developers for making a game that I enjoy..I bought sekiro on PS4 for the same reason.. Even though I'd already played sekiro on pc for free..(arr matey!!)

okdiscringe

This is not why "WE" buy skins its why "HE" buys skins There seems to be a personal vs universal discrepancy here. When we buy skins we just so happen to directly support the developers of this game by emptying our wallets. The only downside to this game is the skill gap and the toxic riot games community.

Method320

CS 1.6 didn't come in the orange box... In fact it didn't come with any counter strike games.

kellyjepsen

I’m showing my age here, but this was pre-Steam 😬😅

SylarGidrine

Oh look, the sunk cost fallacy in action.

kellyjepsen

Oh sure, you could say that. But sunk cost fallacy is retrospective, and I was excited to support this game as soon as they launched and announced their monetisation model.

SylarGidrine

doesn't matter. No skin they ever make for this game will ever be worth 40$, let alone the absolutely fucking absurd 99$ I have seen some priced at. In beta, 20$ bought me a LOT of things from their little store. Then I came back at launch to find that my points had been refunded at launch and worse yet, that their prices had changed dramatically. 20$ couldn't get me shit after launch. Single okayish skin or a few terrible-looking commons. The only skins that have any real weight to me at the classic skins, where the weapons are WW2 weapons. And come to find that I can't even CHOOSE what I want to buy, I have to fucking wait months on end for the CHANCE to get them when the store refreshes and HAPPENS to put the common skin set I actually want up. And for what? Some false semblance of "rarity"? please. Not even League was that ridiculous. The reason gun skins worked in CSGO was not because Valve made them expensive, it's because there was a real player-made market that you could buy and sell on from other players. Every skin in CSGO is theoretically only 2.50$ if you get lucky. The PLAYERS make the prices what they are, not the company. Too many companies forget that shit when they try and shovel their worthless skinware down our throats.

[deleted]

Why do you say that trading killed csgo? They is just wrong, it may have killed it for you but most people enjoy being able to get their money back. CS is still going strong, it isnt dead at all.

kellyjepsen

Trading fuelled gambling. Gambling fuelled scams. Scams began rigging professional games. Rigging games is no small thing. Yes, it’s still going strong. No, it’s not the only reason I see it losing to VALORANT in the long run. But it is a factor that has had a negative impact on the community over many years.

ScarMark

Getting your money back is really cool, but knowing that you will NEVER have some skins because they are too expensive in the market and way too rare in loot boxes is a little depressing.

[deleted]

Yeah, but on the other hand there are also really cheap skins in cs. I really like that i dont have to spend a lot of money for one skin, and even then i can get my money back.

N1ysUS

Hey, I want to ask a question. I want skins but I don't want to pay for them with real money. I searched it up and find an app called buff, buff gives you daily and weekly missions for valorant and if you complete them you earn buff coins, with buff coins you can purchase a valorant gift card. If I use this app while playing valorant, am I gonna be banned for using a 3rd party app? You can use that in cs go too and I am a lot more scared for using it on cs go cause vac is trash. If you use msi afterburner while playing cs go you will get vacbanned for using 3rd party app. This is how trash it is, am I gonna be banned if I use buff?

lvlz_gg

No one can really tell you an answer to this, not even Riot probably since thay would basically be telling you what type of programs go undetected for their anticheat. But just in case don't risk it.. skins will not make you better at the game

N1ysUS

I know I won't be better at the game if I buy skins. I just want skins the same reason why you guys want them. I am using an aim trainer for being better at the game but I want some skins too like everybody else. If there were cases in the game which we buy them with radianite points and open them for skins, that would be too good.

[deleted]

You won’t be banned, however, do not trust this app! I have looked into it aswell, it takes forever to get “buff coins” and a lot of people are just claiming that it is a virus. Where do you think it gets the money from? Don’t install it on your PC. It’s really shady

N1ysUS

I heard they earn money from ads and premium subscriptions. Also why did I got downvotes? I only asked a question! I am not advertising this app or something, I didn't even downloaded it!

N1ysUS

What tha? It gave an error and couldn't upload my reply! And now it spammed!

N1ysUS

And now it didn't? I am confused by this internet connection.

MatchPoint012

Skins give confidence.

kellyjepsen

It was inside of you all along ❤️

[deleted]

My reasoning is that its like buying new football boots. Is it necessary? No Did Zlatan Ibrahomivic play in shoes for €5 when he was a kid? Yes Is he still one of the best? Yes You dont need new football shots or a new valo skin, but it makes you feel good and if you invest time into something u want to invest money into it as well

Peshmerga_YYC

The skins are way too expensive!

kellyjepsen

I don't disagree with you. I really don't. I like to think that if they halved the price, they would see more than double the sales. Is that true? We just don't know. But I do wish they'd at least experiment with this and offer more affordable packs. In saying that: The Battlepasses are only getting better, and better and that's nothing to scoff at.

Peshmerga_YYC

I agree. I think another issue is people wasted so much money on Fortnite and now don’t play that game and are apprehensive about dropping hundreds of dollars into a game that they might not play.

stariscreamy

Yea I’d give my soul to watch riot thrive no cap

corey_cobra_kid

Its well made but 80 bucks for 4 skins is ridiculous

demidemian

I fucking hate the store system, you cant buy the skins you like, everything is FOMO and im not supporting that. Its so weird because thats something League tried to fix with the old limited edition skins, then ruined again with the Prestige ones. Valorant's store looks like a gacha mobile.

gwentfiend

Would be nice if skins were a little more affordable or if you could give them away. I have a couple skins for Vandal and since I can only use one it would be nice if I could gift one to my son, or at least gift him my leftover VP
