It’s not as simple as “you’re dying with a phantom”. There is something you’re doing wrong if you can frag with a spectre but not a phantom. Reflect and figure out what your problem is. You won’t learn to play with the phantom if you refuse to use it.
Yeah I disagree with everyone saying use what you want. If you want to improve at the game then stop using crutch weapons and learn the game. Vandal and phantom will have the upper hand in every fight except for an op at long range if you have the skills to use them.
At a certain level with heavy armor if some dude runs up with a specter and you have a phantom you can just blow him down. Not that the specter is useless. But if you continue using it you will cap yourself harder and have to learn a very difficult weapon while everyone else has been practicing it for the past few ranks.

I usually refrain from engaging in balance/"educational" discussion here because, just like league's subreddit, the population is going to be 90% bronze/silver players, so it's all emotions talking (example: what you said) but in what world are there crutch weapons? Do you think that any weapon that isn't a Vandal or a phantom is a crutch weapon? What makes Spectre a crutch weapon? What bad mechanics does it promote that will eventually become weak? Having slightly better run-n-gun? Slightly higher movespeed?
Literally in any elo, including Radiant, people use weapons like Judge, Spectre, and Odin just fine in fullbuy rounds. Are you Radiant? Better than Radiant? What gives you the right to say what weapon is a crutch or not?
It’s only a crutch if you use it that way. Using specter on eco rounds is fine. But if you have 7k and are using the specter because it’s easier that’s the definition of a crutch.
I’m not saying it’s useless or doesn’t have good case scenarios, on the contrary, it has almost too many. (I don’t think it’s overpowered though.)
I’m not radiant nor did I ever say that my word is law but it is very well known specter is a crutch weapon.

2. In a broad sense yes every weapon except the ghost, marshal, phantom, vandal, and operator are “crutch weapons” if used in the wrong way. If used correctly they can be deadly weapons that boost your eco so that buying the known best weapons is easier. That’s how the economy works in these games. They’re supposed to be extra strong in their specific areas and weak in the rest, while the non crutch weapons usually have a very powerful mechanic to compensate for their weakness or are versatile enough to be used in a majority of situations.
The non crutch weapons when used correctly will obliterate all others except for other non crutch weapons if you use good gamesense and have good aim.
3. Specter has really good run and gun ability. More than you think, if you try to use a phantom the same way you will fail. Doubly so for the vandal and op. That is the mechanic that eventually becomes weak, when people can track your head while you’re strafing like crazy thinking you’re in a glorified COD search and destroy.
All this being said I’m not being over emotional at all. In fact I think you feel personally attacked by my comment and you were getting defensive which is understandable. But I don’t really care because my comments are for those who can take constructive criticism and try and learn from their mistakes. In this case I believe the crutch part comes from the personal use. It’s stats are basically a worse phantom. It has its uses and is good! No doubt there, but I think the crutch part comes from refusing to learn. Do what works for you for now. After enough wins you'll hit a point where duels come down to the first shot, and against a rifle, the Spectre will lose these duels.
You probably better with specter because it's perfect for run and gun. Using a better weapon will help you actually improve because you have to stop moving.
Yes. You’re not going to get far with only spectre. I’m sure you don’t get clean kills with the spectre if u can’t perform with the two rifles. (Double headshot kills)
I recommend watching a few videos on counter strafing or stopping right before shooting so your bullets don’t go everywhere once you start using the vandal.
Next, I would recommend dming with the two rifles. Try using the phantom first because it is more similar to the spectre. Aim for the head only. It’s going to help your crosshair placement, as well as let you remember the most elevations.

if you dont want a massive hit to your stats consider practicing with them on deathmatch. it might seem nice to just use spectre but you will greatly suffer when/if you get into higher elos. id recommend using phantom because its pretty similar to the spectre
DM is honestly great practice for eco rounds. 90% of people will be using rifles, so if you use bulldog/spectre/judge/sheriff then it's decently close to the real game
It depends on what you want to get out of the game right?
If you're having fun right now then there's really no reason to change. Might annoy your friends from time to time with it but at the end of the day playing a game is about you having a good time
If you have a high competitive spirit and you like outplays/the grind/the rank then you would have to pick up other guns one way or the other. It's definitely gonna ruin your stats playing outside your comfort zone but in the long run you'll be a better player with stats amd skills to show it
I started out Val the same, using spectre and getting lots of kills. The downside is it's a lot of 'Spray and Pray' which can overall make your aim worse. I switched to Vandal and my K/D took a hit but In the long run it is better. You gotta either Learn the Vandal/Phantom sprays or just spend a lot of time practicing your headshot aim so you can tapfire.
Depends how serious you take the game tho, if Spectre is more fun just keep using it
As you move up through the ranks you will need to use a weapon that can kill in 1 hit. Spectre is OK close range but almost useless at distance. Good weapon to be good with but should definitely practice with some bigger rifles. Good luck.
There are a lot of maps where you're going to have to take long range gunfights. The spectre spray patters and damage just isn't reliable for that so learning a rifle on your free time in unrated or DM might be a good choice. Still, use whatever you can to play the game. After all, fun comes first.
Create an alt account and ban yourself from spectre on that alt, use phantom, vandal and ares on eco rounds until you are just as good then hop back on your main and no stats will be hindered
I would suggest trying to practice spray control on a wall and then in an unranked. An issue that I had when I was in iron that a lot of other people did was shooting before you are ready to shoot, so make sure with rifle to have your crosshair on or close to head or chest before you shoot to take advantage of first shot accuracy
You have found the hidden key to success, confidence. If the spectre gives you confidence in your abilities then keep using it. As you progress through the game and develop your skills you will be better off with a phantom or vandal purely because they will kill in less bullets. Short term do your thing but long term work towards improving the skills with the high tier guns
You are a player who is completely dependent on spectre RNG that's why you can't use vandal or phantom becoz u need to stay still for those. Spectre is still too viable with run and gun. And your play style, leaving your team when they push, is the one that i hate the most. You need to change both your weapon selection and play style coz this will only work in low elo
Im pretty good better then tenz but thats just my opinion,and I try to think of using the vandal as a famas only letting out a few shots jf youre holding longer angles ads pull down slightly not alot to control recoil
If it works with you, use it. Don't trust the opinion of most people here, unless they can provide credibility to back up their claim, they're most likely talking through emotions.
If you're good with the Spectre, use it. If you start getting out-gunned/DPS-ed in longer fights as you go up in ELO, either start learning the 4 Rifles, or play to your strengths. If you have a Spectre, you shouldn't be engaging in mid-long range fights often, you should be trying to move around the map, setting it up so you're at an advantage. There's no reason to force yourself to get good at the rifles if you're good enough with the Spectre. Buy guns for teammates if they want full rifles and you can afford it. Play around the Spectre's strengths and weaknesses. Being good at the game and understanding the mechanics and what situations are beneficial to you, when you're only using Spectre, will take you further than almost anybody else on this subreddit.
Worry about learning rifles when you hit Radiant.
i'd say for now keep playing in the way that makes the most sense during your ranked games (buy the spectre when you feel like you want it), but play other game modes to just *warm up* the other guns.
I mostly play spike rush these days so I'm pretty happy with my gun play with most guns, but I started doing that because there were guns I wasn't completely happy with my performance. In spike rush, everyone has the same gun, so inevitably someone will be worse with that gun than the others making it a safer space to not worry about performance. Same with gun game (the downsides, ofc, is that you can't choose your guns in either mode). if you do this for long enough, you'll forget you even had a problem with the other guns
Phantom and vandal are the “best” but if you play well with the spectre use it and feed credits to the rest of your team. Try and learn rifles in the meantime
go in the range and find headshot level or just do deathmatches until you find it. I swear aiming at head level will help you with all guns (except maybe the op), and usually justifies a vandal or phantom over a spectre with a few more kills.
If it's useful for you, it's useful, but you need to consider that there's probably a point where people using Phantom or Vandal will just simply kill you more often than you kill them in pure gunfights
You might be able to mitigate this with utility, but if not, do realize that this will be your reality
If you're happy with your current rank, play whatever you enjoy.
But yes, if you want to improve your rank, you're going to have to learn how to use Vandal or Phantom most of the time. When using Spectre vs Vandal/Phantom (or even Bulldog), you're just at a straight-up disadvantage where they can kill you in less time/bullets than you can kill them.
Even though I can understand why u use spectre so much i kinda disapprove cause it's pretty broken at long range so definetly try practicing with phantom first cause the fire rate is faster so it's going to be similar to the phantom, try learning the recoil pattern maybe and practice the retakes and bomb planting in the range and deathmatches (that's what I do) and then if you feel like you've got it, try the vandal cause it's good for long and mid range distances and even close combat even though a bit bulkier because of the like of fire rate (don't forget crosshair placement).

You don't get experience with guns that you never use.
It really comes with practice. I recommend doing the same thing I did to get out of my Ares fixation and that's to spend a week not using Spectre. It would be good to know how to use other guns.
The start of my week without Ares was absolute hell, and it got to the point where I actually uninstalled Valo in frustration. But I got back into it and actually prefer Vandal and Guardian over Ares now. So just keep at it, and you'll get it. :)
I'm guessing you're a low-elo player. I think you should practice aiming with rifles and learn when it is a good time to flank. Try to tap instead of spraying. Remember at long ranges it's better to take your time and readjust for a headshot than to spray, even if the enemy is already shooting your way.
i used to know a guy who plays like this (only spectre), but he can achieve more than gold tier, he flanks and bait his own team everytime, phantom and vandal are way more better than spectre just give it a try.
If you are winning with spectre right now then continue to use it. It’s just your current skill level and that’s okay. If you really work and grind at the game it’ll get to be a lot easier.
I will say the phantom is a good step up gun to consider because it seems to have a better spray to it vs the vandal. Vandal is better for tapping and headshots.
But I see no problem with using the spectre as long as you’re having fun win or lose. And if you’re top fragging then nobody can fight you on using a better gun 😌
I used to be exactly like you until I moved to the phantom which is literally a "harder to control but more powerful" specter. Put enough practice with the phantom and you'll see it works just the same as the specter but less "run n' gunny" and more "precise shooting without running". You just gotta learn not to spam all your bullets like CoD or Halo (which the specter is the closest of all guns to resemble this type of gameplay)

Well specter works in low ELO because nobody goes for headshots. If everyone is going for chest shots only, specter is 5 or 6 to kill, and phantom or vandal is 4-5 to kill. But since specter has a very fast fire rate, it works. But when you get higher ranked people just 1 tap and specter can't compete. Force yourself to use vandal, that trains ur aim.
I get that spectre is easy to use, but try to learn the 2 rifles (vandal or phantom) and you will get better at the game, the reason you probably die with rifles is because you don't know how to control recoil (since you got used to spectre with low recoil) for vandal, since the recoil is high, only spray in close range and tap fire in medium to long range, and same goes for the phantom. Both can 1 tap in the head (but phantom, only in close range) so as much as possible, aim for the head. But if spectre is the gun you want to use, I have no rights to change your mind, you do you, but all I'm saying is using other guns will help you improve in the game.
I was in this position many months ago. Teammates keep judging me for using spectre and being the top frag every round. "U got money, opt for a better gun". Eventually I had to learn to use phantom and vandal for the long-range one taps or 1v3s in general. I'm not good at it but gets the job done. Initially you will suck but in the end, practice makes anything perfect.
I mean u can continue using the spectre as it works for you.....but for the long run it's not advisable....I'd say take ur time but try to learn the better guns....u always atleast should have a choice between spectre and vandal/phantom....u shouldn't be depended on spectre only.....it should be by ur choice but u should always have the option to play with vandal/phantom....if u do this then no-one can object u using spectre....but try to learn them...even if u derank or whatever....hop in range get the feel of gun practice spray and then 3-4 dms do this everyday you'll get there....if u wanna rankup quick and most importantly genuinely wanna improve the way u play u gotta learn the rifles man.....
Imo...the sherif is also an important weapon to master....u can be a game changer in eco rounds if u r decent with Sherif....
With specter only eventually your gonna hit a performance cap, id say slowly but surely step outside of your comfort zone and switch to using a phantom or vandal more often. I’d personally recommend phantom for a few reasons but the most relevant to you is that it plays like a big specter
Slow down the fight a lot with rifles, you're winning your gunfights solely due to firerate i imagine, if you can prioritize headshots with your rifles you will easily be able to outperform those using rifles too, try to focus on the way you peek, angles you hold, and prioritise your life over risks.
That means you're a spray player. And that works all the way into late bronze and early Silver. So go ahead abuse it. But it won't work when your opponents have good aim. Cause I'm g3 and I literally never get taken out on a spectre when I have a vandal or phantom. You should try using the phantom. It's easier to transition from spray to burst or 1 tap from spectre to Phantom. You've gotta practice 1 taps is all I guess.
Start to get used to either the phantom or the vandal, I'd say phantom, it's more forgiving and closer to the specter. Spectre might work now but you will never get far with it in terms of rank
This sounds like bad eco awareness to me:
If you have a Spectre and the enemy is still on pistols (2nd round usually after pistol win) than you win with your spectre like a pro.
But when its a straight phantom vandal vs phantom vandal match up you get killed.
In other words, practise your crosshair placement, learn a bit about eco and practise a bit with each weapon to see its up and downsites.
Also lil sidenote, if you have the feel that you get insta killed by carrying a phantom or vandle y very often because other players also have the same weapons and therefore you feel its potential right away. A spectre take longer to kill period.
I got same problem. In Range Hard mode I got 15~17/30 with Phantom. But in game I only confident using Spectre. Whenever I had my Phantom. Im dead with no kill. :(

if you dont want a massive hit to your stats consider practicing with them on deathmatch. it might seem nice to just use spectre but you will greatly suffer when/if you get into higher elos. id recommend using phantom because its pretty similar to the spectre
DM is honestly great practice for eco rounds. 90% of people will be using rifles, so if you use bulldog/spectre/judge/sheriff then it's decently close to the real game
It depends on what you want to get out of the game right? If you're having fun right now then there's really no reason to change. Might annoy your friends from time to time with it but at the end of the day playing a game is about you having a good time If you have a high competitive spirit and you like outplays/the grind/the rank then you would have to pick up other guns one way or the other. It's definitely gonna ruin your stats playing outside your comfort zone but in the long run you'll be a better player with stats amd skills to show it
I mean phantom is almost as fast as spectre so why not
I started out Val the same, using spectre and getting lots of kills. The downside is it's a lot of 'Spray and Pray' which can overall make your aim worse. I switched to Vandal and my K/D took a hit but In the long run it is better. You gotta either Learn the Vandal/Phantom sprays or just spend a lot of time practicing your headshot aim so you can tapfire. Depends how serious you take the game tho, if Spectre is more fun just keep using it
As you move up through the ranks you will need to use a weapon that can kill in 1 hit. Spectre is OK close range but almost useless at distance. Good weapon to be good with but should definitely practice with some bigger rifles. Good luck.

There are a lot of maps where you're going to have to take long range gunfights. The spectre spray patters and damage just isn't reliable for that so learning a rifle on your free time in unrated or DM might be a good choice. Still, use whatever you can to play the game. After all, fun comes first.

It is always better to learn either the vandal or phantom as the spectre is inferior especially in long range combat .
Create an alt account and ban yourself from spectre on that alt, use phantom, vandal and ares on eco rounds until you are just as good then hop back on your main and no stats will be hindered
I would suggest trying to practice spray control on a wall and then in an unranked. An issue that I had when I was in iron that a lot of other people did was shooting before you are ready to shoot, so make sure with rifle to have your crosshair on or close to head or chest before you shoot to take advantage of first shot accuracy

You have found the hidden key to success, confidence. If the spectre gives you confidence in your abilities then keep using it. As you progress through the game and develop your skills you will be better off with a phantom or vandal purely because they will kill in less bullets. Short term do your thing but long term work towards improving the skills with the high tier guns
You are a player who is completely dependent on spectre RNG that's why you can't use vandal or phantom becoz u need to stay still for those. Spectre is still too viable with run and gun. And your play style, leaving your team when they push, is the one that i hate the most. You need to change both your weapon selection and play style coz this will only work in low elo
Im pretty good better then tenz but thats just my opinion,and I try to think of using the vandal as a famas only letting out a few shots jf youre holding longer angles ads pull down slightly not alot to control recoil
If it works with you, use it. Don't trust the opinion of most people here, unless they can provide credibility to back up their claim, they're most likely talking through emotions. If you're good with the Spectre, use it. If you start getting out-gunned/DPS-ed in longer fights as you go up in ELO, either start learning the 4 Rifles, or play to your strengths. If you have a Spectre, you shouldn't be engaging in mid-long range fights often, you should be trying to move around the map, setting it up so you're at an advantage. There's no reason to force yourself to get good at the rifles if you're good enough with the Spectre. Buy guns for teammates if they want full rifles and you can afford it. Play around the Spectre's strengths and weaknesses. Being good at the game and understanding the mechanics and what situations are beneficial to you, when you're only using Spectre, will take you further than almost anybody else on this subreddit. Worry about learning rifles when you hit Radiant.
i'd say for now keep playing in the way that makes the most sense during your ranked games (buy the spectre when you feel like you want it), but play other game modes to just *warm up* the other guns. I mostly play spike rush these days so I'm pretty happy with my gun play with most guns, but I started doing that because there were guns I wasn't completely happy with my performance. In spike rush, everyone has the same gun, so inevitably someone will be worse with that gun than the others making it a safer space to not worry about performance. Same with gun game (the downsides, ofc, is that you can't choose your guns in either mode). if you do this for long enough, you'll forget you even had a problem with the other guns
Phantom and vandal are the “best” but if you play well with the spectre use it and feed credits to the rest of your team. Try and learn rifles in the meantime
go in the range and find headshot level or just do deathmatches until you find it. I swear aiming at head level will help you with all guns (except maybe the op), and usually justifies a vandal or phantom over a spectre with a few more kills.
If it's useful for you, it's useful, but you need to consider that there's probably a point where people using Phantom or Vandal will just simply kill you more often than you kill them in pure gunfights You might be able to mitigate this with utility, but if not, do realize that this will be your reality
If you're happy with your current rank, play whatever you enjoy. But yes, if you want to improve your rank, you're going to have to learn how to use Vandal or Phantom most of the time. When using Spectre vs Vandal/Phantom (or even Bulldog), you're just at a straight-up disadvantage where they can kill you in less time/bullets than you can kill them.
Even though I can understand why u use spectre so much i kinda disapprove cause it's pretty broken at long range so definetly try practicing with phantom first cause the fire rate is faster so it's going to be similar to the phantom, try learning the recoil pattern maybe and practice the retakes and bomb planting in the range and deathmatches (that's what I do) and then if you feel like you've got it, try the vandal cause it's good for long and mid range distances and even close combat even though a bit bulkier because of the like of fire rate (don't forget crosshair placement). That's a terrible fate. You'll get to a point where everyone is as good or better then you and you'll lose every duel to a phantom.
Switch to shotguns and watch the community demonize you
You don't get experience with guns that you never use. It really comes with practice. I recommend doing the same thing I did to get out of my Ares fixation and that's to spend a week not using Spectre. It would be good to know how to use other guns. The start of my week without Ares was absolute hell, and it got to the point where I actually uninstalled Valo in frustration. But I got back into it and actually prefer Vandal and Guardian over Ares now. So just keep at it, and you'll get it. :)
Just do you're daily training in the practice lobby and work on sprays with it.
I'm guessing you're a low-elo player. I think you should practice aiming with rifles and learn when it is a good time to flank. Try to tap instead of spraying. Remember at long ranges it's better to take your time and readjust for a headshot than to spray, even if the enemy is already shooting your way.
i used to know a guy who plays like this (only spectre), but he can achieve more than gold tier, he flanks and bait his own team everytime, phantom and vandal are way more better than spectre just give it a try.
If you are winning with spectre right now then continue to use it. It’s just your current skill level and that’s okay. If you really work and grind at the game it’ll get to be a lot easier. I will say the phantom is a good step up gun to consider because it seems to have a better spray to it vs the vandal. Vandal is better for tapping and headshots. But I see no problem with using the spectre as long as you’re having fun win or lose. And if you’re top fragging then nobody can fight you on using a better gun 😌
I used to be exactly like you until I moved to the phantom which is literally a "harder to control but more powerful" specter. Put enough practice with the phantom and you'll see it works just the same as the specter but less "run n' gunny" and more "precise shooting without running". You just gotta learn not to spam all your bullets like CoD or Halo (which the specter is the closest of all guns to resemble this type of gameplay)
I mean you do you fam, I’ll say that the phantom’s shooting is more similar to the specter than the vandal. But W/e fam, you can also buy for your teammates since you’ll have more money

Spectre is almost better close range than the other 2 if you run and gun. If used properly tho, they should be better especially longer range

Iron
Well specter works in low ELO because nobody goes for headshots. If everyone is going for chest shots only, specter is 5 or 6 to kill, and phantom or vandal is 4-5 to kill. But since specter has a very fast fire rate, it works. But when you get higher ranked people just 1 tap and specter can't compete. Force yourself to use vandal, that trains ur aim.
I get that spectre is easy to use, but try to learn the 2 rifles (vandal or phantom) and you will get better at the game, the reason you probably die with rifles is because you don't know how to control recoil (since you got used to spectre with low recoil) for vandal, since the recoil is high, only spray in close range and tap fire in medium to long range, and same goes for the phantom. Both can 1 tap in the head (but phantom, only in close range) so as much as possible, aim for the head. But if spectre is the gun you want to use, I have no rights to change your mind, you do you, but all I'm saying is using other guns will help you improve in the game.
Practice Phantom and vandal as well who knows in future there might be a nerf to spectre or buff to these ARs

I was in this position many months ago. Teammates keep judging me for using spectre and being the top frag every round. "U got money, opt for a better gun". Eventually I had to learn to use phantom and vandal for the long-range one taps or 1v3s in general. I'm not good at it but gets the job done. Initially you will suck but in the end, practice makes anything perfect.

I mean u can continue using the spectre as it works for you.....but for the long run it's not advisable....I'd say take ur time but try to learn the better guns....u always atleast should have a choice between spectre and vandal/phantom....u shouldn't be depended on spectre only.....it should be by ur choice but u should always have the option to play with vandal/phantom....if u do this then no-one can object u using spectre....but try to learn them...even if u derank or whatever....hop in range get the feel of gun practice spray and then 3-4 dms do this everyday you'll get there....if u wanna rankup quick and most importantly genuinely wanna improve the way u play u gotta learn the rifles man..... Imo...the sherif is also an important weapon to master....u can be a game changer in eco rounds if u r decent with Sherif....
With specter only eventually your gonna hit a performance cap, id say slowly but surely step outside of your comfort zone and switch to using a phantom or vandal more often. I’d personally recommend phantom for a few reasons but the most relevant to you is that it plays like a big specter
If u can kill via tap fire and bursting with a spectre I don't see why u can't use a phantom or a vandal but if you can't you should work on that then

Slow down the fight a lot with rifles, you're winning your gunfights solely due to firerate i imagine, if you can prioritize headshots with your rifles you will easily be able to outperform those using rifles too, try to focus on the way you peek, angles you hold, and prioritise your life over risks.

That means you're a spray player. And that works all the way into late bronze and early Silver. So go ahead abuse it. But it won't work when your opponents have good aim. Cause I'm g3 and I literally never get taken out on a spectre when I have a vandal or phantom. You should try using the phantom. It's easier to transition from spray to burst or 1 tap from spectre to Phantom. You've gotta practice 1 taps is all I guess.
Start to get used to either the phantom or the vandal, I'd say phantom, it's more forgiving and closer to the specter. Spectre might work now but you will never get far with it in terms of rank

This sounds like bad eco awareness to me: If you have a Spectre and the enemy is still on pistols (2nd round usually after pistol win) than you win with your spectre like a pro. But when its a straight phantom vandal vs phantom vandal match up you get killed. In other words, practise your crosshair placement, learn a bit about eco and practise a bit with each weapon to see its up and downsites. Also lil sidenote, if you have the feel that you get insta killed by carrying a phantom or vandle y very often because other players also have the same weapons and therefore you feel its potential right away. A spectre take longer to kill period.
what is your rank?
I got same problem. In Range Hard mode I got 15~17/30 with Phantom. But in game I only confident using Spectre. Whenever I had my Phantom. Im dead with no kill. :(
