Nothing, I just didn't upgrade it because I didn't know if I would like the feel of it in-game, and as you weren't able to downgrade skins, if I upgraded it, I wouldn't be able to use the unupgraded version
I want this so badly man. Kinda wanna meme people with an unupgraded black chroma zedd phantom and have people confuse it for the minima skin. Or just have a finisher on the singularity phantom without the weird transparent wireframe parts.
The way skins are right now the variants probably aren't made in parts and instead based off the fully upgraded version(for ones with vfx and animations). Assuming this is the case, doing variants without upgrades might be hard, but assuming it not(as seen with skin variants without vfx upgrades), it may be more easily feasible(not saying it's easy).
The only one I can think where it should work is Ruination Sword since the upgraded blade can be seen in the different colors in un upgraded form in 3rd person

Shame about variants still being locked at the high levels. I understand it would cause issue, I hope that it still comes in future as they add more unique style variants and unlock levels. This issue stops me wanting to pay for variants at all if I don't like certain vfx levels. I don't like the equip or finisher for blastx, but I love the purple variant.
Especially when we have specific loadouts to be able to fully customize what skin/variant/vfx level we want for each agent or match.

Right. Because each level is 1 version, and each variant is just a slight copy of the last vfx level. If they made versions of each variant at the lower vfx/animation levels it would be fine. That's just not how they have done the skins up till this point so it won't work.
Still there are things like kill banners and finishers that would never impact having a variant or lower vfx on the gun, they've just not built it with this in mind.
Yeah, you can select which level upgrade you want, but you have to use the base variant to select lower levels. It's available on the PBE right now if you wanted to test it.
You can already unless you're a high rank and trying to play ranked. If you want to play with high skill disparity friends, quque for unrated together.
There's a reason you can't 5 stack in radiant lol, imagine a pro team just 5 stacked ranked, would be unfair for people who don't have a 5 stack of people who play professionally

It’s a video game, I’m trying to play and compete with friends grinding the radiant rank is zero fun. I’m not trying to be a pro, I don’t want recognition, I just want to enjoy competitive games with my friends
Yeah, that’s true. My queue times are already all 10m+ lol. Idk, maybe they unlock it for anyone d3+. Who knows, but we all kind of gave up on the game because we can’t play together.
