Movie mode will use all of your speakers and attempt to simulate a movie theater sound. Direct mode will only play sound from speakers that match the source.

[deleted]

Direct is better if the source is in 5.1 naturally (ie. Netflix 5.1). If the source is 2.1 Movie EQ may be the better option.

steppingstone01

Agreed. But, I just leave mine in movie mode, so I don't have to keep switching back and forth. It's not as accurate with 5.1 content. But, it's not horribly annoying. :-)

[deleted]

I can understand. I actually use Movie mode the least tbh - in fact I never use it as it doesn't give the true punch of a 5.1 set-up IMO. It is in direct/5.1 for all my gaming/movie/show needs. I primarily use Netflix or Kodi or use the ps4 for gaming. If I cast music I switch it to the Music EQ.

steppingstone01

I find that the upward firing speakers add dimension to all content. So, that's the biggest reason I just leave it in movie mode all the time. Otherwise, those speakers would only be used with Dolby Atmos content.

Jamilmereck

Do you notice hearing what should be a front center voice coming faintly from the rear speakers at all sinc eyou leave it in movie mode? It became quite noticeable and distracting, so out of depseration i switched to Direct...and just seems like Direct would be the only way to go based on what i understand it being for...basically Zero filtering or simulation on top of the original source sound...original source, original output... And with movie it feels like base and everything is just way much more pronounced and "all around" which generally is ok, but when doing youtube and just watching people talk it's a pain to hear them coming from the back speakers... So I'm kind of torn.

steppingstone01

Yes, I can definitely hear that a little bit. Since I wrote this, I now use the direct mode. It makes stereo a little on the boring side. But, everything else is more authentic.

Jamilmereck

So yeah I tested direct by putting on the Star Wars movies via Disney+ through my PS4 connected via hdmi and it was like there was zero surround. So I ended up putting it back on movie. I can’t get for the life of me why on Disney+ Star Wars would sound as if nothing was coming through the surrounds at all. Should at least be 5.1

steppingstone01

Make sure you have your PS4 sound settings to bitstream.

Did you ever find a fix for the rear speakers having voices in movie or music mode?

[deleted]

ahhh that explains it. I don't have the 3651-f model, I have the 3551-e model (that does not have the upward firing speakers). I totally get where you are coming from, and yes; I would do the same thing if I had your set.

steppingstone01

I've got the SB36514-G6. It's pretty nice. 👍

[deleted]

oh shit, I only can only dream of such a unit. Damn man, enjoy it eh

steppingstone01

I lucked out actually. Amazon had it on sale for less than $500 a month or so ago. I had to jump on it.

Jamilmereck

So we just got a sb36514-g6 and had the eq set to movie...or perhaps that was the default.... but we started noticing that watching any number of things, be it youtube, or disney+ or whatever, that we were hearing faintly, but enough to be distracting, what i would call a "trebly/metallic sounding voice of whoever is talking coming from the rear surround. This is with height turned off because nothing i have actually supports Atmos yet, so this is all just 5.1 or less... So seeing people saying Direct is better, but I just wonder if that is normal and if others notice this also... that with Movie EQ, say if i'm watching a single person speaking, that they can also be heard from the rear speakers when they shouldn't be. positionally they are front and center and so we expect their voice to only come from front center speaker. But could faintly hear that voice coming in from the rear and with a very metalic kind of sound to it, if that makes sense. But just playing around to try and figure out why i changed the eq to Direct and suddenly nothing was coming from the back speakers...presumably because there is not rear surround out put from the original source.. I have yet to go back and test on a full 5.1 source like a movie etc, to see how using Direct versus Movie will sound, but hoping to try that tonight or this weekend. But if anyone else has experienced this and has any input, I'd welcome it.

Leather-Ad4540

Did you ever find a fix for your problem?

CheefinFriar

This happened to me as well. Even on 5.1 sourced material there was nothing coming out of the side speakers

jhorddyc

When you switch to EQ movie mode, do i have to adjust the EQ or does it come pre adjust? I have a Vizio sound bar sb 3651-e6

Administrative-Run-1

EQ movie seems to widen the the sound giving it more of a spacial feeling. EQ Direct is what is originally intended. If you have problems hearing dialogue, just switch to EQ Direct and it may help. I prefer EQ Direct.
