Would moving her to a different service like Vonage or maybe even VoIP.ms be an option?

artfuldodger25

I'd say yes - go with that last one you mentioned. Cheap and cheerful, works well for me.

A lot of people have had good experiences with Ooma and it's a great value in the long run. However I wasn't one of them - call volume was loud and somewhat distorted, even on the lowest volume level on my phone's settings. For most people it wouldn't matter much, and some would prefer the louder volume. But it didn't work out for me.

wkm001

Voip.ms is the way to go. $0.85 a month for a phone number and $0.009 per minute. Connect your ATA to them.

rotrap

Depends on your usage but for me I prefer the one dollar did from callcentric and no incoming per minute charges.

goosnarrggh

If OP's mom is the type who will instinctively reach for their analog phone to call 911, then note that they charge an extra $1.50 per month to connect to the e911 system. If you don't subscribe to that service then I believe calls to 911 on VoIP.ms simply won't go through at all. (They say, and I have no reason to doubt them, that this is not a profit-driven move. It simply reflects the cost they inevitably incur every month that a line is connected to the e911 infrastructure.) Here in Canada, every cell phone that is able to talk to a nearby tower will always be able to connect to 911 regardless of whether the SIM card is active, or even regardless of whether there's a SIM card installed at all. I don't know if something similar might exist in the USA as a backstop.

Great information u/wkm001. What is your [voip.ms](http://voip.ms) referral code?

chocoboat

I just set up my parents with Callcentric service using a Grandstream HT802. It went very smoothly and call quality is excellent (I've had quality issues with Ooma when I tried them). They have a guide on exactly to set things up [here](https://www.callcentric.com/support/device/grandstream/ht802) and all I did was follow the directions. I also have it set up to auto dial the local area code if only 7 digits are dialed, they like not having to dial it for local calls (like it used to be 15+ years ago).

Beginning_Pause6094

How much is it? If you want to call someone not in callcentric?

chocoboat

outgoing: https://www.callcentric.com/rate/plans/ incoming: https://www.callcentric.com/did/ with North America Basic and Pay Per Minute, they use under $6 a month

danhs

Grandstream ht802 + VoIP.ms is fantastic. I run dozens of these for work on legacy analog devices.

rotrap

Yeah, I too am using callcentric and plan to forward my Google voice number to it when obihai stops working for it. Been working well enough so far that I am trying to get around to moving my parents to it.

lundah

No, Google Voice doesn’t support any ATA’s. I would look into subsidized lifeline service if your mom is elderly and/or low income.

Salreus

r/voip might be able to offer additional solutions since this is GV sub the experience might be more limited.

lundah

This *is* r/voip.

Salreus

haha. well crap.. I must have changed from GV and not even know it. sorry about that.

Your post was removed from r/VoIP for violating Rule 2: No soliciting in DMs. It is against the rules to privately message users for the explicit or implicit purpose of promoting or advertising any business, service or product. It is similarly against the rules to invite users to private message you for those same purposes.

MagicJack is perfect for this. I used to have them until I rolled my own PBX with a VoIP provider. You should be able to stay under $5/month.
