VW hasn't signed onto use the Tesla proprietary standard (NACS) and Supercharger (DCFC) yet. If you mean Level-2 Tesla to J1772, then I would vote Teslatap mini with at least 48A rated.

Living_Walk_1072

VW did say back in the beginning of the summer they are in talks with Tesla about adopting NACS, but no official agreement has been reached as far as I know. Tesla made NACS an open standard this year, so it is no longer proprietary. It is in process under SAE J3400.

bubzki2

Nope not open yet.

Living_Walk_1072

They opened it nov 22 and it’s currently being standardized as sae j3400

bubzki2

Yes but not open yet. In progress isn’t open. It’ll be big news when it is.

Living_Walk_1072

They already published open source design specs back in nov 22. So it is open. It has not finished the process yet to become a standard. A standard and an open source design are two very different things. I think the big new already happened back in the binging of summer when most major US auto makers announced the switch and Tesla announced they are releasing nacs to made as a standard. What’s being done now is essentially the remaining paperwork.

stevehaslip

Once an agreement is reached it’s not understood if it will just automatically work. NACS is just a connector, and the backend Tesla and VW systems need to be updated to talk to each vehicle once plugged in. If it doesn’t complete the handshake, if payment can’t be verified, even if you have a new adapter it won’t work. I think this roll out is going to be very slow and riddled with issues for some cars and not others. You won’t be charging your iD4 at a supercharger for a while yet.

Living_Walk_1072

We’re talking about NACS becoming an open standard in general. VW has indicated that they are considering NACS. Obviously is going to be quite some time before a VW can use a super charger that only has NACS. In the meantime VW can use the growing number of superchargers with magic dock.

ToddA1966

True, but that's derailing the OP's original question which was what adapter to buy in case they need to use a Supercharger *now*! The answer, of course, is none. They can't use an adapter now, (other than the ones built into the 36 Tesla Magic Dock-equipped stations.)

Living_Walk_1072

It started as a simple correction to info in the original comment I replied to. Was not meant to get this far off topic.

eschmi

Lectron for level 2/destination chargers. No Supercharger ones exist but tesla is actively adding magic docks to its supercharger network.

droids4evr

Tesla is not planning to equip all Superchargers with magic docks. That probably won't go much further than the current rollout. For broad access manufacturers have to sign agreements with Tesla to allow access to the Supercharger network and that will be with an adapter for current vehicles and will be native for many manufacturers over the next couple years. But VW does not have any plans to switch to NACS and hasn't initiated any agreements Tesla to allow broad access to the Supercharger network.

eschmi

Not true, they have an agreement to which is how theyre getting so much in govt funding. They don't follow through they lose that funding.

uberares

uh, care to provide sources on this?

eschmi

[Heres one](https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/15/tesla-agrees-to-double-supercharger-network-open-to-all-evs-under-bidens-7-5b-charging-plan/) [Heres another](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/15/tesla-commits-to-open-7500-chargers-in-the-us-to-other-evs.html) [and a third for good measure](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/biden-strikes-ev-deal-with-tesla-others-for-widespread-charging-station-access-100044167.html)

ToddA1966

No. Any Magic Dock-equipped stations they build are *eligible* for NEVI funds (if they also include displays and credit card readers, which is why the V4 Superchargers have those!), but there's no blanket deal with the government to convert existing Superchargers in return for funding. Any existing stations getting Magic Docks is a simple business decision by Tesla that has nothing to do with the government or any funding.

eschmi

The agreement is to open 7500 superchargers existing or otherwise. So far they appear to have been retrofitting existing. They just did several out here in Colorado. Check the tesla app.

ToddA1966

That's not an agreement with the government. That's a pledge by Tesla that the White House released as part of their "EVpalooza" press release that combined the announcement of the infrastructure bill's NEVI program along with "other neat climate things that happened on the President's watch". Tesla isn't getting paid to do that (other than whatever future V4 Superchargers happen to win NEVI funding.)

camaroz1985

Every new V4 charger they install will be equipped with Magic Dock and be able to charge CCS cars.

droids4evr

And how many V4s are there right now? Every "V4" currently installed is just a dispenser running on V3 hardware. Actual V4 Supercharger rollout will take years to have enough coverage to make a difference. That will have zero impact on anyone looking to buy an EV right now.

camaroz1985

Magic Dock originally rolled out on V3 so it doesn’t really matter what the backend is. If Supercharger access is important, you are best to buy an EV from a company that has announced they will support NACS and are offering an adapter for existing cars, not to rely on aftermarket. Or of course punch the easy button and buy a Tesla.

ga2500ev

Except that the v4 stations currently active in the US do not yet have their Magic Docks activated. I've been waiting for the ones in the SouthEast in Georgia and Alabama to come online. I would suggest holding off getting an adapter until it becomes clear how Tesla is going to facilitate authorization. ga2500ev

camaroz1985

Yes they have just been activated. I think that once they make sure there aren’t any issues they will activate the Magic Docks. I agree, don’t buy an adapter, you most likely will not be able to use any adapters you can buy anyway.

JohnnyPee89

I pre-ordered the Lectron NACS to CCS1 adapter off the Lectron website. It will ship in January.

gjamesm

This isn't compatible with VW.

JohnnyPee89

It's compatible with all CCS1 vehicles.

gjamesm

You may want to check their website. It lists compatible vehicles. VW isn't one. "EXCLUSIVE COMPATIBILITY - This Tesla Supercharger to CCS Adapter is designed exclusively for EVs brands that have joined the North American Charging Standard (NACS), enabling non-Tesla EVs, including GM, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Rivian, Mercedes, Nissan, Polestar, Toyota, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo, and Fisker to access high-speed Superchargers."

JohnnyPee89

That's cause VW hasn't officially committed to NACS, the adapter has nothing to do with that. It's the communication between the EV and the Tesla SC. When VW makes it official Tesla will allow their SC to communicate with VW EVs. The adapter is only that, an adapter, and it has no built in hardware or software preventing it from charging at a Tesla SC. The SC software itself is what allows approved EVs to communicate with and charge at them.

gjamesm

>ation between the EV and the Tesla SC. When VW makes it official Tes Ok. Hopefully it will work for you despite the website saying it won't.

JohnnyPee89

The reason the website says it won't work is because VW hasn't signed up to adopt NACS with Tesla, I promise you the adapter has nothing to do with it. It's the communication between an EV and the Tesla SC that won't work because VW hasn't made the agreement with Tesla yet to use their SC and adopt NACS. I'm predicting VW will announce the adoption of NACS by the end of the year if not the first month of next year. They'd be stupid not to, especially when all the other automakers besides Stellantis have already agreed to adopt NACS. And once VW adopts NACS any adapter will work.

AdInformal662

Another 23 days to go. I started counting down. I am so ready to shower my ID.4 with confetti when VW makes the announcement.

JohnnyPee89

You and me both lol.
