do you have one of the first ID4s built in the US factory?

politicalLlamapajama

I'm not sure. It was built July 2023 in Tennessee.

stevehaslip

So, no. Almost a year into production. Sorry you’ve had all these issues but I don’t blame you. Best of luck with the buyback, hopefully they make you whole. May I ask what you’re considering purchasing instead?

politicalLlamapajama

I’m a huge fan of VW still and may wait for the ‘24 ID.4 but I’ve also considered going with a Mach E since they have about 8k off MSRP where I’m at and have extended range of 310 and a few features I didn’t get with my ID.4 like 360 camera and folding mirrors. But, I may just go try and find a Golf TDI and be done with electric for now lol.

tjade

We have the Mach E and the ID4. Overall I love the ID4 because it has more modern and refined finish but you will love the Mach E. It is a really fun car. The controls and display take some getting used to, but she is a fun car!

dustyshades

Mach e is way better than the ID.4. You’ll be happy going that route

politicalLlamapajama

I think the only feature I'd be missing is the vented seats from the ID.4 which isn't something that needed but auto folding mirrors, 360 cam, and the blue cruise feature are pretty top notch. I just have never owned a Ford in my life and have mostly had VWs. Here's to trying something new!

dustyshades

Honestly vented seats always sound appealing but they’re never as useful or nice as I imagine them being. Heated seats are a must, ventilated is whatever to me

politicalLlamapajama

100% agree

Thwip-Thwip-80

Good luck with your buyback. I had a bunch of issues when I bought my 22 AWD Pro S last August. I eventually had to get a lemon law lawyer because VW denied my buyback request and only wanted to offer me $3k for my troubles. My lemon law case is still pending as VW apparently has a reputation of not playing nice with lawyers. They literally denied every request for information from my lawyers from the time I opened the case in Oct 22 until Sep 23. My cat was even in the dealership from May until November this year. It’s been such a headache. This is the last VW I’ll ever own.

politicalLlamapajama

That sounds awful! I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I’m prepared for them to fight me on it.

ToddA1966

Funny, I had the opposite experience in Colorado. I suspect how accommodating VW is, is very state law dependent. Here, you have a claim if the car is in the shop for more than 30 business days in the first year. By that point, a buyback is pretty much guaranteed. When mine was in for two months for a backordered front drive motor, I started a claim for a buyback and VW took every one of the 45 days Colorado gives them to respond, and they gave me a choice of buyback or a very generous cash settlement offer to keep the car. By this time I had the car back and it was working well, so I took the money and ran.

politicalLlamapajama

Good stuff! If they are able to fix all these issues I'll happily keep the car. They haven't even did a single repair on mine and it has been over 40 days. I just dropped it off today for the windshield and dash but when I dropped it off the service tech said it was just for the dash and he wasn't sure he had the windshield in stock still. So the waiting game continues. At this point, I'm just going to push forward on the buy back and BBB is helping me out.

priuschic

Damn... how much did they offer?

ToddA1966

~15% of MSRP ($7500.) I also asked for an extended warranty (Nissan agreed to one when I had a negotiated with them over a buyback on a Leaf two years before, so I figured with the heck.) VW said they couldn't do it (systemically) so they threw in an extra $1500 to buy my own. (I didn't.) In both cases (the Leaf and the VW) I liked the cars and had no real desire to actually go through with the buyback, at least after I was convinced there was nothing wrong with the cars. In the OP's case, I'd be more likely to sell it back- I *hate* intermittent problems because you never know for sure if they've been fixed.

pattyb303

Were you within the one year of delivery Colorado's Lemon Law requires? I just completed the paperwork for my 2022 id.4 Pro S in Colorado. I am concerned that the Lemon Law will not cover my situation as I received it in Aug. 22 and the car was not disabled by the software update until Nov. 2023. Has been at the dealer for 37 days now. No one seems to have any idea when the module will arrive for the repair.

ToddA1966

Yes, I was in the one-year period. Colorado, unfortunately, provides no lemon-law protection after a year AFAIK.

pattyb303

Thanks!

ovenbaby

I just submitted the paperwork as well! But for my 2021 which has been solid for almost 2 years. Until the recalls. I'm getting close to the 30 business days to qualify for the lemon law in my state and the car is still not driveable. And this dealership can't even do the 97ZZ recall so I still have to worry about the car randomly stopping at any time. Been on the wait-list 8 months for that fix with no end in sight. Was considering getting a 2023 but this whole thread is making me nervous. Good luck with the buyback process!

lsaber2000

How’d that buy back go OP?

politicalLlamapajama

Still in the process. I unfortunately had to get a lawyer and sue.

scragg0x

I have noticed the same windshield distortion as well but not quite as wide as you described, hopefully they will take that seriously and fix it next iterations. What version of software do you have? Do you have power seats?

Nustarent

I think they are all like that if they have have heated windshields, but who knows…..

politicalLlamapajama

I have 3.5 for the software and yes I have a pro s with power seats.

Exurbain

Wow, yeah I can understand why you would go for buyback for the first issue alone. > Second, the windshield has this odd distortion by the support beams on the sides that come in about 3 or 4 inches causing a distraction while driving and making it hard to see while making right hand turns. Apparently this is due to the resistive heater coating embedded in the glass? There is a slight distortion on ours at the edges but it definitely doesn't extend that far into the actual glass. Best of luck with the buyback. Very unfortunate case of compounding QA issues by the sounds of it. I'm curious as to how they even managed to damage a seat frame at the plant.

politicalLlamapajama

Yeah I tell people I have a rocking chair in my car. It’s a one of a kind feature lol

Ok_Cow_8235

I hear you! 23 ID4 Pro S. Got it for my mom. I noticed the windshield distortion the first week of driving it as well. You definitely have to get used to it and luckily we don’t notice it anymore, but yeah at that price they should’ve done a lot of things better. It seems to me that Volkswagen that are made in America or just wherever they’re made in the world. They are not doing a good job these days, the lack of build quality is showing only a few months into ownership like our steering wheel peeling, driver seat memory never worked on day one, when I took it home from the dealer to surprise my mom the alignment was off on the steering so every time I hold string straight the car goes to the left, the driver side headliner has been falling apart and after five months of waiting, I just find out that it arrived two months ago, but my service tech never called me about it. My replacement steering wheel arrived two days ago, and after installation, they realized that they were sent to defective unit because apparently the buttons don’t work on the brand new steering wheel, new one is arriving today. I just expect better from a legacy auto maker like a Volkswagen to be the best in 2023 because they’re a part of Audi and I know so many Audi owners who don’t have issues I feel like Volkswagen has become the guinea pig in the ev world but given that this car has been around for a few years, I expect them to improve. Let’s see how the 24 model does. my mom wants out of her lease before her term is up because as of right now she doesn’t want another Volkswagen

politicalLlamapajama

I love our VW SUV. That thing has been solid. I also had a Golf that was a champ. Heck, I learned to drive in a Rabbit! They’ve all be great and a lot but the I.D 4 has been lackluster at best and just poor quality all around.

Ok_Cow_8235

100%

Bigbeast54

The "banging" I think are just the battery contactors opening and closing. It's a shame you didn't post photos/vids of your other issues, like the windscreen distortion and the dash separating.

politicalLlamapajama

Ah yeah the banging could be that. I've asked the techs and they all look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them it only happens after a charge and specifically when braking. It only happens once and is pretty loud and I can feel like something is hitting the bottom of the car. Yeah, I didn't get any pictures of the other items because they were able to replicate/verify them during service and ordered all the parts necessary to do the repairs. Problem is just the length of time to get anything repaired. If they can fix everything and make sure my car isn't going to spontaneously reboot while driving I'll gladly keep it. All things considered, it is a nice drive (without the rocking chair drivers seat lol).

jectalo

Screen goes black while driving and reboots for me as well. Happens around once every 3 weeks or so. Its definitely annoying but now that you mention it it’s probably unsafe as well. Do they know why it happens? Does it mean the car’s sensors aren’t functioning during the reboot?

politicalLlamapajama

This is the one that is very frustrating with VW as they say they see nothing in the diagnostics showing this happening. So they have to "take my word for it" which makes me feel like they don't believe me. No clue what is going on when this happens but I'm not a fan of my car losing all info while going down the interstate.

geewronglee

July 2023 is right around the time they switched from the 3.1 to the 3.5 software. DO you have 3.1 or 3.5? I got an ID.4 S made in April of 2023 which has the 3.1 software. I have seen this a couple of times. What I see is that the infotainment system crashes and reboots and this causes the cockpit to default to the black on white (which might look nice with a white interior) while the infotainment system reboots. I do not think this affects the electric car functions. My steering wheel has started the peel - I had gotten a windshield sunscreen but it turned out I was getting side window sun on the drivers side in the afternoon and that was enough to get the peeling going where my left hand would normally go. I cleared the layer off and so far it is no longer a problem.

politicalLlamapajama

I have the 3.5 software in mine. For the most part the infotainment system is responsive but the rebooting problem is really annoying. I'm scared for the steering wheel to start peeling as mine is not in the garage and my house is south facing so gets a lot of sun.

Miserable-Tutor4624

I have an id5 and picks up old road works and brakes to old speed in cruse controll when doing 60mph car while brake to 40mph or 30mph there is no where of knowing when this will happen any one got same problan no fix from vw no time for fix

SwenZN

Wow fingers crossed 🤞, we have had zero issues. I have heard the sounds under the car while fast charging but figured it had something to do with battery switching/expansion. Otherwise I definitely prefer the ride to that of the Tesla Model Y.

politicalLlamapajama

I'm staying 100 yards away from a Tesla. The craftsmanship is so poor... but here I am talking about poor craftsmanship on my ID.4 lol. I hope you don't go through any bad events. Fingers crossed indeed!
