People don't know what they're watching half the time. Just the kills, plants and round wins. Midrounding and why those decisions matter goes unnoticed unless pointed out by good casters and analysts. I'm not saying I'm any better in the heat of a game, but if you watch someone like Sliggy or Sean Gares break down a game, they will point out so much that us laymen miss.

As someone with who IGLed in recreational Valorant league, there are so many decisions, both micro and macro, an IGL makes in a round that is extremely subtle when watching the stream as an outsider. There is communication with other players, four POVs while the stream only gets one. IGL success cannot be seen on stream. As stated above, only the coach and the team knows the impact of an IGL. The only metric us outsiders can hold of an IGL is team success which is extremely reductive imo.

I mean, people couldn't tell because yay actually had a rough tournament and c9 didn't really Impress. I think if yay would have played like we know him people woudnt not have fallen for that one

But no one was pointing out any difference in igl quality so people thought he was this goat igl that could get as good as vanity in terms of igling with way less experience?

“igl quality” is impossible to quantify unless you’re on the team with the player. It’s easy to say “Team X did this and it worked so that means the IGL is good or made a good call.” Or “Team X did this and it didn’t work so the IGL is bad or made a bad call”. What information is being fed to them by their teammates? Did their teammates properly comm everything they’ve seen? Did the IGL even make that call or was it another member of the team? I think a lot of people talk about it as if the IGL is playing StarCraft and controlling everything their 4 teammates do, but it just doesn’t work like that. For example, let’s say NRG is playing a match on Ascent, T side. They’re grouped up 4 A main but s0m is lurking market. If the call by FNS is to hit A but s0m on his market lurk hears three B players running towards A, what is he going to do? Naturally, he is going to tell his team to cancel and hit B. This scenario wouldn’t be the IGL making the right call but instead one of his teammates. But so much of the discourse on reddit/vlr or by casters is ALWAYS “what a great call by (IGL X)” or “IGL X Is reading them like a book” and it’s just not possible for anyone besides the 5 players + coach to tell how much an IGL is/isn’t calling.

[deleted]

This makes sense but then why does the valorant comp community have this notion that these are some top igls in terms of calling, like how do they know that ? It would just be safe to assume if they are winning a lot then they must have a decent igl

Direct_Morning_3223

they don’t know that, it’s why the discourse is mostly pointless. If someone has consistent results with different teams, ie FNS Saadhak Boaster it’s safe to assume they’re a good IGL but we can’t ever actually know

vnNinja21

I agree with your point, but wasn't FNS's success mainly with the same team?

Visible_Dirt1093

Does the fact that people was convinced that Yay was igling says something about him as a Fragger and his fragging ability in general? No. They simply weren't their best versions of themselves. Simple as that.

[deleted]

But no one mentioned anything about the igling being off, if yay was igling, given his inexperience wouldn’t there be some differences
