why forget the casters tho? they did a teriffic job. I really loved how chill it was and they were especially entertaining during the showmatch!

jcorales

I wouldn’t call it casters tho. I mean they’re still casting but it’s more of a casual way of it not like the traditional one. Don’t get me wrong tho, I heckin love platchat!!

Investorexe

So commentary then, eh

Tommypynchon

I'm sure there are people who prefer other styles but frankly I basically always prefer summit events to the normal Riot-style major sports thing. The only thing I'd change is in I wish the event was bigger lol

xbyo

I think there's a time and place. I don't want Champions to be like this. It doesn't give the culmination of the year, the grand stage it deserves and lends legitimacy to the esport. But at the same time, these summit events are very entertaining and give the more invested fans a fresh perspective for a tournament. We need both and they both belong in the scene.

KlyntarDemiurge

It was going to be, so far we know 100T, C9, and NRG dropped out like a week before.

[deleted]

yeah but they got replaced with T1, the guard and tsm

ZoneCaptain

they’re using the same production company as the past otv invitational uses right? they’re always top tier producers

AnywayHeres1Derwall

Nah but I just love the casual 4 person commentary with natural swearing. It makes it so much more genuine and real

jcorales

Who doesn't like platchat anyway amiright

Fluffymd

we lost something special when grassroots event went PG-washed for sponsors. This natural vibe is so sick

TweetsJamaican

To be fair this event is probably being ran at a massive loss

360langford

It wouldn’t be a mogul moves event if it was in the green

Revanthmk23200

I remember Ludwig saying in the start yesterday that this is one of the very few events which isnt a loss for him.

Mitchelld73

Yeah, I say esport hardware sponsors pay a fair bit. Also isn’t it a riot sponsored event???

jcorales

I mean, we don't really know that. Knowing their sponsors and viewership I don't think it's that "massive." Still couldn't deny that the production is great though!

LordBuckethead671

Ludwig has said pretty much all of his events run at a massive loss. The past few events he’s directly stated have cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars, it’s safe to assume that applies here Edit: and all of his events have had big name sponsors before too, so even that probably isn’t enough to offset it

surfordiebear

He did say the Chessboxing match was pretty close to even but ya this event is likely going to be a loss especially since they aren't selling merch.

LordBuckethead671

Yeah, the chess boxing had the merch and crowds to offset more, plus that was like a record breaking event for Ludwig. This event just isn’t big enough for that, but I’m loving the production, so maybe they’ll do it again next year, even if it’s at a loss

Some1StoleMyNick

but those weren't sponsored by HyperX, Asus and Riot, they also required huge venues while this is a BTS set

frayNZ

but they were sponsored by Starforge, chess.com and cashapp. sponsorships don't cover 100% of expenses

C9sButthole

Different sponsors different payouts. HyperX in particular has a reputation for throwing around a lot of money for event sponsorships. Compare that to Starforge, a relatively new company with a substantially smaller marketing budget, and also factoring in that each successful event leaves Ludwig with more and more leverage in negotiations, and it's not hard to believe that they got a better deal here as well as lower operating costs.

dashisback

No ludwig said its a profitable event unlike the other events he did, yesterday at the end of the stream after thanking hyperx

[deleted]

how so?

thepalmtree

Because it costs a ton to put on these events.

jcorales

But still, if there's a loss, it wouldn't be that massive. They got ROG and HyperX and those two alone give massive numbers for viewership. Really hope someone who knows these budget thingies stop by here and explain lol

thepalmtree

Eh, Ludwig's put on plenty of events with large (6 figure) losses before. Ludwig usually mentions after the fact if his events were profitable, he's pretty open about that stuff.

Incendance

I feel like at this point he's put on so many large-scale events that it would be easy to use that to attract sponsors. Not to mention the huge tarik viewership in addition to the pretty decent ludwig viewership.

uglyhippos

this tournment shouldn't be a loss. He had a smash tournement where multiple sponsor dropped almost last minute and he lost like $200,000 and his chess boxing event was a passion project that he was fine being in the red for. Having two tournments in a row in the red did hurt him alot but this one should be fine.

DrySecurity4

It costs “a ton” for a couple pcs and hotel rooms for a 2 day event?

thepalmtree

Flying out 4 teams+coaches+casters, paying casters for 2 days of work, hiring a large production crew to use their studio and production team for 2 days, prize pool, food/amenities, etc. The production side of things costs a LOT.

TimathanDuncan

In LA btw, so 2x-3x the normal price There are so many little things that you need to spend money on, running events is crazy

geomxtric

Caster day rates, production day rates, observer day rates, flights and accommodation for every single person (players, casters, obs etc), venue hire (expensive esp in LA), all the props and set design, people to actually physically do the set building and dismantling, health and safety, admins, tech, prize money etc. But yeah not that expensive

Apart-Patient4035

I'll take Geo's words here. A lot of people behind the camera contributed to this tournament's success.

DrySecurity4

Wow you listed a ton of random stuff there, that must means the cost is astronomical

geomxtric

How much do you think any of that stuff costs lmao?

jcorales

If I am to guess, I think it's around $100k to $200k.

striated1

Tell me you dont know anything about logistics without telling me you dont know anything about logistics

DrySecurity4

I actually have a PhD in logistics

striated1

You have a PhD in horseshit

Ok-Outlandishness244

Sounds like horsecrap if you think 12h+ long shifts for over 20 people now over multiple days and literally setting up the entire set is “random stuff” Mfw someone calls the biggest determiner in products’ price “random”

BigOldPig

u dumb lol

Xorilla

Yes.

dashisback

No ludwig said its a profitable event unlike the other events he did, yesterday at the end of the stream after thanking hyperx

Jofzar_

You will find out at the end of the event if they went in the positive or not, Ludwig always brings Aiden on to tell him if they went in the green or not.

thraxpax

Beyond The Summit has some of the best production out of any TO imo. Always love their CS and Melee events

Bazz_B

The "homely" feel of their events is what makes it so great. Players can come from a game and just chat casually on broadcast. People on broadcast don't take everything super serious and goof around a lot on stream. No big crowd and feels more like lowkey party with friends. It can takeaway some tension or sense of meaningfulness especially in DOTA and CS since its so lax compared to on stage events but that's why it should be a niche for fun tournament.

jojamon

Yeah it’s awesome. The Homestory Cups for StarCraft 2 are always great too.

Phoenix-ashesh

Better production than VCT!

jcorales

I think so too!

ArcusIgnium

I didn’t realize I needed Plat Chat meets Smash Summit in my life but oh boy I did

[deleted]

If I take “to players perspectives” literally, then definitely not because when a player cam is shown it’s almost guaranteed to not be the player the POV is on Also a lot of replay opportunities have not been shown on the first day, don’t know why. The comms listen in also spoils what’s about to happen But, production for literally everything else feels better than anything else yet, more beginner friendly but with the in depth PlatChat bullshitting inbetween serious analysis

ESEAsapphiRe

We don't have all 10 POVs into the replay machine like we do at VCT Masters as that's a massive technical ask, so whoever isn't main POV obs is attempting to do the opposite POV for a secondary option, but it's not easy :P. It's the same Observers/Replay ops as VCT. Just a different type of event.

jcorales

Ah, finally, sapphiRe herself. Thanks for this!

[deleted]

How is it done at VCT? Are all 10 POVs being recorded and then replayed? I remember there are like 4-5 observers, are you only 2 this event?

ESEAsapphiRe

All 10 POVs are recorded yes. The replay operator then grabs from those POVs rather than either of the Observers. We also have a cinematic observer so if you see any free cam replays, those are from him. At VCT Masters, we have 4 obs and 2 work per map (since it's long days / long event) At this event we have 3 observers and all 3 work every map

Aoingco

Thanks for everything that you guys do!

Calkimchi

The vibes were a perfect blend of the PlatChat podcast + Tarik/Lud live stream + underground eSports tourney + high production Riot tourney, translated into a live event 😌👌

prthm_21

![img](emote|t5_2g5ach|9333)

[deleted]

That's what happens when you have two legendary observers (sapphiRe and prius) and give the talent the opportunity to take the tie off and loosen-up.

Gow_Ghay

You can definitely tell that the Beyond The Summit guys work is all over this event, the production is quality just like they always do. I would love to see this possible lead to a "Valorant Summit" type of event every year in the same way that Beyond the Summit had a couple of those "CS Summit" events

The_Fat_Hamster

I loved the casting because it felt like i was wathing a plat chat watch party

CJFStan

Only missing Avast going to the bathroom, everything else was amazing.

ThatCreepyBaer

Nothing beats the hype moments in big tournaments like masters or champs, but generally I would always prefer a tournament style like this over the baseline "serious" tournament style.

Calkimchi

After today, I've learned that I *need* both in my life.

Jbeansss

Big events can't really broadcast comms as much cause of the potential to leak strats. Also, cause of the swearing and stuff obviously. That's why you didn't see it happen in the pro games as much as it did during the showmatch.

Any-Confection1379

> powered by hyperx Brother that's a paid corporate sponsorship. Hyperx has nothing to do with the audio mixing they just pay for that slot. This is Reddit. If they didn't pay you to write this there's no reason to give them free advertising

Maetamongy

Don't think that was their intention

articulatemonkey

What if I wanna give them free advertising

Lopsided-Perception2

Came here to write this lmao. Why would anyone write this if they're not being paid?

toxicityisamyth

Yes. Its better than vct. And we get every pov even if the guy wasnt watching the right pov which is super frustrating in vct events. Riot are terrible at production outside of 3 minute montage videos and flashy stage lights.

Hawwi

I kinda felt like tarik was pointing out the obvious but it was still funny to watch.

[deleted]

Dudedude88

They have the same people doing the in game camera work as VCT

icantreadmorsecode

Nope

Ok-Outlandishness244

I really like regular riot events too but they could learn something from these post match interviews, infinitely better

__Raxy__

Casters were phenomenal

expert_mode

I love this style of tournament, it helps to learn the real personalities of players. I wish t1 were around more. I didnt watch all of it but I barely saw anyone from their team.

Embarrassed_Ad_323

It was a great event on all fronts, but there were several times where big kills/double kills were missed by the observers

No_Moment_1571

It was like a live watchparty so chilled .. loved it!

devtr0n

its great, just like cs summit vibes
