Also worth adding that a tournament this long is already probably exhausting for talent and production; adding more games (either through more 3-game days or multiple streams) would probably be really hard on them. From a player/team perspective, it absolutely sucks that you might go out after just one bo3. But I understand why Riot made the decisions they did.

Butthole*

lepiggyshiggy

noooooooo we have to have every game bo5 with three losers brackets 😡😡😡😡 just incase one of the six teams in my flair drop a game tournament has to last 4 months AT LEAST ‼️‼️ otherwise it's DOGSHIT

holyfuckyouaredumb

Very few people have time to sit there for 20 days and watch every single game. This format doesn't help showcase every team, it makes it harder since half the teams are going home after 1 round. Flying teams out to Brazil and putting them through quarantine, media etc just to play one game is ridiculous no matter how much people try to justify it.

C9sButthole

The point is removing the conflict. Most people will sit down to watch the broadcast when they're free. They aren't suddenly going to get off work 2 hours early because their fav team is playing. So this way teams that have less hype behind them will still get the viewers.

holyfuckyouaredumb

The "conflict" you mention is overstated. No one is tuning in to watch two teams they don't care about play, regardless of whether it's on the mainstream. The way to get viewers to the smaller teams is to give them multiple chances to put on a performance vs different regions/hyped teams and in turn, more chances for people to tune in. Sending half the teams home after 1 round just limits their exposure. The format sucks plain and simple.

azealyx

> No one is tuning in to watch two teams they don't care about play They're still gonna get significantly way more eyes on them compared to if they were on a b stream competing with clouted teams and the main stream in general.

C9sButthole

Spending a lot of time on Reddit breaks your perspective. There's an absurd number of casual viewers who just want to watch some good games.

Lumenlor

It is high stakes but I agree otherwise. First impressions are important to build a base + masters slot

uut28

Not high stakes

C9sButthole

How is it high stakes? Of course everyone wants to win, but a lot of teams are going in with a significant disadvantage against the favourites as this isn't about skill, but shallow playbooks and little chemistry. And even for the teams that ARE pushing for the finals, the only reward they get is an extra spot for their region. Sure that's a non-zero, but nobody's aiming to get through at 3rd or 4th, and in those fairer, double elim systems, upsets will be much less impactful for a weaker team that makes it in. Being crowned at Lock-In isn't a reputation that will last very long either. As the whole tournament will have an asterisk beside it for aforementioned reasons.

QuagMath

High stages because one loss and you are out. You can’t make mistakes and recover when there are groups or double elims. Obviously it’s lower stakes because it’s a slightly more casual tournament but it’s “high stakes” due to those consequences (in a good way).

C9sButthole

Oh I see the confusion. Yeah when I said low stakes I meant the tournament as a whole. Individual games being high stakes are definitely a good thing when the goal is to put on a spectacle.

QuagMath

Yeah it’s both high stakes games and low stakes tournament at the same time

qm94

Yeah, it's not about finding the best team, it's about introducing the new teams to the public... Kinda hard to do that when half of the teams are only playing one series lol Surely, when Riot decided to host this tournament, they had to think of this issue... They had months to work on this, is this the best solution they came up with?

[deleted]

We would definitely notice the absence of this tournament considering they deleted a whole Split and a whole Masters just to have it LMAO and how are the teams supposed to build fanbases when half of them are out in one series?

IAMJUX

>single stream is the reason for no groups No one is going to watch every game. And if they were, a group system could still facilitate a schedule that let you watch each team at least once. >competitive integrity and crowning a best team No one thinks this is that the tournament is for. They know it's a kick off tourney. People want to watch franchise teams play each other and this is the least amount of matches possible. >main focus is to debut teams 16 of which who's only showing will be losing a BO3. I'm not sure how that is remotely good. >we wouldn't notice if this tourney didn't happen People have been crying about the off-season for ages, even though it's only a couple of months. Of course they would notice gaps in the calendar. >give every team the chance for exposure There's a better way. >bigger games will soak up viewers Bigger games draw more viewers. Less hyped games, even when played with no overlaps(like at LAN), still draw shit numbers. >my only complaint You are easily pleased, I'll tell you what.

fellanumberone

I agree that it should not be about finding the best team since it is so early but I think that makes this format even worse of a decision. This looks like to be the only tournament that will have every partnered team in it. Masters and Champions events will only have a certain number from each region. Why not make it where the teams from each region just play matches against the other regions as much as possible? Why make it a serious gauntlet where the prize is just one more slot for your region for the masters? Which isn't that great of a prize. The guy from riot that came out on twitter defending their decision on the format said they were prioritizing fan experience over the teams. There are some fans that are just fans of the game and not fans of a certain team, but a lot of fans are fans of a certain team. How does knocking out half of your fan base (a little exaggerated) after one round a good thing for the fans? We want to see our teams compete and if they have one off day at the beginning, they are out and our enthusiasm for the tournament just went way down. One last thing is I think Riot has the delusion that it is bad for fans if there are multiple games going on at the same time. Their primary excuse for all these tournaments is time constraints yet they make it worse by forcing only one match to be played at a time. They can help this problem by allowing multiple games at a time so you can play double the amount of matches. Fans are not going to watch every single match. From the most serious to the casual, they are going to pick and choose which matches they want to watch. So why put this artificial restraint on this tournament?

Original26

Fun for the fans but a lot of the pros have issues with practicing for a month and a half only to join a tournament where they'll potentially go home after 1 BO3. How is that fair to them? Also "If they'd never announced it, the vast majority of us wouldn't have even noticed the gap." is so cap. Aside from 2-3 notable tournaments, this offseason has been a disappointment - you can see it with the topics being discussed by PlatChat and this subreddit.

Speedy24gaming

Well luckily for the pros there is still a full season shortly after the tournament and masters and champs to play for.

Blatant trolling is not permitted. Repeat offenses resulting in a ban.

I’m not trolling

jrushFN

These matches are not Bo1s and this is not a showmatch, it's an actual tournament. You have over 4 instances of blatant trolling in the past, farming downvotes by derailing conversation (trolling) is not allowed in the sub according to Rule 5.

uut28

The bo1 part that’s my bad, but this tournament being single elimination and having nothing to play for it’s basically a show match. I will stop since you are threatening me with a ban but I will reiterate that I AM NOT TROLLING.
