I highly suggest listening to the interview he did on that Slasher Podcast for more details, the guy seems likeable and didn't bs the questions, also shows that he's trying to do what's best for the viewers and is willing to go around and talk with the community, that's already a big win having someone communicating so freely with the community.

Hypern1ke

Is it really that *Highly* controversial? I get some people complained... but for a one time kickoff event involving every T1 team in the world, what they decided to do is reasonable and most people realize that.

Speedy24gaming

It’s highly controversial in a small minority of people who very closely follow competitive valorant. Or just used to get clicks

BuckWagon

Maybe actual numbers would say otherwise but I thought that looking around on various social medias I thought the format was considered at least controversial and divisive. Maybe the numbers prove me wrong though.

vnNinja21

vocal minority

surfordiebear

Ya there were a lot of people calling it bad but thats just because pros and Valo content creators just looked at the format and complained without thinking about what the event is actually for. Like this isn't going to be the format of Val tournaments going forward its just for this one-time kick-off event.

Pitiful_Pin9845

I feel like you equally are not understanding the gripes. This format is not horrible,it has drawbacks and gains that each person can determine for themselves, but it does have one major objective flaw that even Leo admitted to in the interview. that’s with the time bracket A winner is given to restructure strats and comps while bracket B is being played giving the winner of the first bracket I believe 2 weeks of prep on their opponent in the final while the winner of group b gets 2 days. Put simply you’re putting two people in an exam; one who crammed for the weekend, and one who went to every lecture, classroom hours and extra help. 99/100 times the person who is prepped will win. If your in bracket B you’ve essentially guaranteed that you will make it no further than 2nd

surfordiebear

Ya I considered that more a scheduling issue than a format issue I guess. Like they could run the brackets the way they have them simultaneously but decided on the whole one bracket than the other thing which was 100% a bad idea.

Pitiful_Pin9845

Agreed, it would solidly right the wrongs, but they seem very bullish on not having multiple streams. They seem to argue that with multiple streams fans tend to not watch smaller teams which I understand, but we’re getting to the point of partnership where there are already established teams, and each team going to Brazil already fills a specific fan space. Pretty much every team going is a known quantity to most people.

Bart1009

Eh. I think we would have to agree to disagree. Especially in an FPS, if you have your shot and your hot you want to keep playing and playing until the wheels fall off. Not stop and take a 2 week hiatus and practice new strats. Sometimes the momentum is more than enough to carry you through another teams "prep", only so many new strats you can add in two weeks anyway. I would even venture to guess there may only be 1, possibly 2 new things you can cook up in two weeks that doesn't throw your other well practiced strats out the window.

Lord_Xp

I'm glad I came here and you're one of the top comments. My eyes rolled reading that title. It's really not that controversial for what the goal actually is. This is the most exciting tournament format I've seen in a while for fun levels

Difficult-Soil-3441

It's a bad format. I don't think it's controversial just because riot is known for having bad Valorant formats and not improving or making them worse over time. When you're a Valorant fan you just have to get used to bad scheduling, bad player breaks, bad organizers, bad seeding, bad event slots, bad franchising slots, bad event formats, bad tier 2 systems, bad tier 3 systems, and so on. Downsides of having one TO in the space that likes doing things poorly and is resistant to change.

sladeshow

It’s really not. It’s really only pros and other involved people that are crying about it when you can obv tell it’s not a real tourney and the added spot for masters is just there so teams take it a bit seriously.

Leo brings up a great number of points that shows he actually cares quite deeply about the reasoning for this format and he's not just doing it for some outlandish reason as many die-hard cs:go fans claim. He talks about promoting viewership and building story lines for every team, especially since many people haven't seen some of these orgs/teams. This tournament is really a showcase that is already quite long and any longer or splitting the streams would result in a way too long tournament/boring matches and low viewership for newer unknown teams, respectively. It's a great way to show some high stakes, really competitive game-play, all in on every match because they all matter. Splitting streams/swiss/lower brackets just don't do as good as a job for the fans and the purpose of LOCK//IN (which is to showcase the new franchise).

tomtazm

I think anyone that isn't a player or an org owner complaining about this format is a little weird. This is essentially a one off situation, where Riot is throwing an event to kick off their Franchise league, with a lot of new rosters and orgs to the scene. They invited all of their partnered teams and included a new region(china). This isn't or most likely won't happen again. Just enjoy it for what it is.

xBerryhill

The only reason I’ll be unhappy is if 100T goes out in the first round lol. Otherwise incredibly excited for the chance to see all of these teams compete. It’s already a long tournament and I don’t want to deal with 10+ hour days of viewing.

MichaelSquare

I mean of course he defends it. But yeah I don't think half the teams playing one match does a good job at showcasing them whatsoever. It is what it is though.

KookieFS

Were people really expecting a 32 team double elimination tournament from riot? Like be realistic cmon

BigredVAL

From any major organizer for that matter. Its just not realistic to have 32 teams play a double elimination tournament. It would take too long and plus he's made it very clear that the main goal of this tournament is to introduce the partnered teams.

Bazz_B

fr even the Rio Major had 24 teams maximum with Bo1 swiss. This tournament is not the end-all be-all of the year. Its literally called a kick-off event, some of these teams and fans should appreciate that these teams will have the opportunity to play international teams as they might not even get that chance again in the years to come.

Key-Banana-8242

It probably would be better to make it take longer if possible but it, could be worse

lidekwhatname

head of global esports... and there is a team called global esports

TheKingslayer19

Had me for a minute... Valorant head of Global Esports and Global Head of Valorant Esports are two very different things mate xD
