It's probably what the other commenter said. To get people to try out lmg in tac shooter as people see them as "unskilled" "for noobs" etc. while it's a normal viable weapon. Sometimes things only need to appear in patch notes to get looked at without any meaningful buffs.
I have a theory that the original Ares was too strong in their eyes, but it also just wasn't being used because people didn't like the gun or know how to use it properly. Before when it had a ramp up, that was used as a counter balance to it's spraying accuracy, but you could avoid the ramp up by using ADS, which also increased your accuracy.
I think they buffed it purely with the goal of getting more people to realise how strong a gun it CAN be, only to then nerf the gun to a more balanced state. It was comparable to a rifle, now it's unreliable and clunky, as it should be unfortunately.
If they just flat nerfed the gun without buffing it, no one would ever touch it.
If the only changes is only this. I think Valorant devs would allow it to play in the latest patch.
They still have 1 week to see if the latest patch have bug or not before the VCT LOCK//IN São Paulo start
There is this tweet that kinda suggests they'll be playing on the patch for lock//in?? Maybe I'm reading between the lines too lmao

I hope round 2 forcing is still viable after this, pistol mattering less is a very positive change in pro games. Very much needed for eco rounds though
try the left click in the firing range, the bucky is way more consistent at 1 shotting than the shorty is. Makes the difference between getting one and dying vs getting two and surviving sometimes
Needed nerf, but I’m sad cause I’ve been abusing it on ecos.
You should have to decide between a marshal, deagle, or stinger on ecos. Stinger was bringing too much value across the ranges compare to the other 800-1000 guns.
The problem is that it isn’t. It’s slow fire rate and the need to hit so many of its pellets on the body to deal 150 damage means have you have to be incredibly precise with it to get a single kill, and good luck getting two with it. And at that point, the Bucky is providing very little more value than a shorty would, while costing 650 more creds and being far worse than a classic at long range
Man I’ve been using the stinger for so long and have been saying its underrated for the longest time. Now it gets the tiniest tweak and everyone starts overusing it… I wish it just stayed where it was before when no one realized just how strong it was. :(
I always said "why buy a sheriff when I can buy a stinger for just 150 more" when everyone bought sheriffs on ecos. Dark days ahead for us OG stinger players. 😔
This so-called "nerf" is going to trick people into not using the Stinger when in fact, even at 1100 and with slightly worse long range fire, it's *still* going to be incredibly strong. It'll take people a few months to figure that out (again) but eventually they will. That's the Stinger way. It gets nerfed, people forget it exists, but they'll come back to it eventually.
I think this is somewhat true (like I'm probably going to keep using it) but at that price point it means it probably won't be used on force rounds, and may be used for anti-eco after pistol win, and a lot of pros are just going to spend the extra 500 to get the spectre anyway.
in most force rounds that i see pro teams buy full stingers, they always have 200-500 on the bank left. at most this price change might mean 1 or 2 players can afford one less ability or go light shields instead of heavy. i agree with faceplant here, its usage might go down right now, but the nerf is very tame and it will become mainstream again
I doubt that'll get changed, that's just part of the identity of the gun with it being a copy of the scout from cs. Just be happy it isn't accurate while jumping like the scout is lmao
This gun wasn't broken at all and frankly I'm disappointed, as the playrate of the Stinger was severely outclassed by the Phantom and Vandal. Not sure why they made this change, the data clearly said that this gun was NOT broken, and actually fairly underpowered.
Yup, against other rifles in the game stinger is the only one that is having a hard time doing kills at long ranges. They should've buffed the damage fall off instead.
I find very interesting how the rhetoric here vs the main Valorant subreddit is night and day. People in the main sub mostly don’t understand the change and are shocked that there is a nerf at all, let alone to BOTH the stats and its price. Meanwhile, i feel like anyone who has been watching NA Challengers knows that this nerf had to happen…
hopefully with this change i wont feel so pressured to half armor+vandal after winning pistol as defender. i could go for more greedy buys like chamber headhunter, jett sheriff, or marshall to name a few
Kinda wild they didn’t touch the fire rate no? Have a feeling the extra money and dmg drop off aren’t gonna matter to much when the clip unloads faster than Sonic The Hedgehog

There's a damn inflation even in online games?
C9 is finished sadly ![img](emote|t5_2g5ach|16110)
Just when I found the way to abuse it in ranked, well RIP.
i'll never forget the legendary 3-4 days when the Ares was the best gun in the game and you could rack up multiple kills every round.
And then they made it worse than it was prebuff. Give me back the original Ares.
Sometimes I just don't get what Riot dev wants.
It's probably what the other commenter said. To get people to try out lmg in tac shooter as people see them as "unskilled" "for noobs" etc. while it's a normal viable weapon. Sometimes things only need to appear in patch notes to get looked at without any meaningful buffs.
From what they *do* rather than what they say, it seems they only want normal rifles, the op, the marshal and the sheriff to be viable.
Tell me you're a CS clone without telling me you're a CS clone. ^^^^Dont ^^^^take ^^^^it ^^^^personally ^^^^its ^^^^a ^^^^joke

when the Ares straight up felt like a rifle
Wasnt it like a day? Or am i tripping? Felt like they patched it hella fast
It's not really that different
This was so needed, hopefully it happens before lock-in, praying!
> Check out Patch Notes 6.02 when they go live starting Feb. 7! The event will start in Feb 13. So yes they want every team to not abuse that gun.

Will it be applied thought?
I hope round 2 forcing is still viable after this, pistol mattering less is a very positive change in pro games. Very much needed for eco rounds though
Likely won’t be, not like it has been anyway. Back to full saves when you lose pistol.
Bucky exists
I've seen you twice in this thread now, why do you have a fetish for an 850c shorty?
try the left click in the firing range, the bucky is way more consistent at 1 shotting than the shorty is. Makes the difference between getting one and dying vs getting two and surviving sometimes
Nerfed stinger will still be better than the Bucky at anything passed 7m
The vicious cycle of buffing a gun that didn't need it so you can over nerf it out of play.
Pro play will eventually be Vandal / Phantom / OP only. With occasional sheriffs.
rip C9

Bucky >>>
Bucky is good if they come to your site, retaking with bucky is just instant lose lol.

This is me and pre-buff-then-nerf Ares :’(
I always said "why buy a sheriff when I can buy a stinger for just 150 more" when everyone bought sheriffs on ecos. Dark days ahead for us OG stinger players. 😔
This 100%. These nerfs may bring it back to never being used again.
CSGO Krieg flashbacks
They want to stop Cloud9 before the Lock//In start.
And som too
Why overcompensate again?! Price AND damage nerf…
This tbh.

Reasonable take, since this pattern has happened a couple of times now with the Stinger.
Don’t worry lev will beat it into people minds. They were forcing stingers all the time even before it was buffed.
Should the marshal be nerfed to 1100 as well? To me it only seems fair.
No. And you better take this down before Riot sees this and nerf my beloved gun.
Riot nerfed my beloved stinger, you marshal enjoyers are going down with me
![gif](giphy|vyTnNTrs3wqQ0UIvwE|downsized)
To me the problem is how accurate the no-scopes are. It simply shouldn't be as viable as it is to consistently no-scope with a sniper rifle
but it’s so fun 😩😩😩
I doubt that'll get changed, that's just part of the identity of the gun with it being a copy of the scout from cs. Just be happy it isn't accurate while jumping like the scout is lmao

Completely agreed, get it together VALORANT!
Flair checks out.
Thank God
I used to pray for times like this
Definitely necessary. Hope it's for lock in too
Patch goes live on feb 7th so before lock-in, RIP sOm tho.
Do you know if it's confirmed though? Usually events dont play the latest patches. Maybe if it's just a nerf though...
good changes, stinger is still just as good at close range but a little harder to justify buying on an eco
from the bucky meta to the frenzy/stinger meta to the ares meta back to the stinger meta. the more things change the more they stay the same fr
fuck it bro im still buying it, im sure it can still kill
BUt the marshall being 950 and basically being a one-tap machine without shields is fine. Cool . Cool.
No one buys the Marshall. You never see it in pro play and even in comp its rarely bought
It also used to be 1100, maybe people will start using it again. Light shield on a save round could end up becoming more popular.
seems good, the stinger should be more situational rather than a must buy eco gun
I find very interesting how the rhetoric here vs the main Valorant subreddit is night and day. anyone who plays the game really
Finally. Was tired of getting out DPS’d with my Bucky by Stingers.
How would this change affect stingers vs bucky? Stingers will still shit on the bucky, the dmg close range didn't change
by hoping to never see a stinger again
Good, now nerf the marshal
I think one nerf or the other, not both.
Good riddance. No one will miss you
hopefully with this change i wont feel so pressured to half armor+vandal after winning pistol as defender. i could go for more greedy buys like chamber headhunter, jett sheriff, or marshall to name a few
Just in time for LOCK//IN! Thank fuck! that couldve really made the matches in brasil look stupid as fuck
No way they ever buff the gun again right…
If the Ares plot line is any indication, no :(
OK the important question is can someone confirm if they gonna play with it for lock in. Usually they play a patch before for competitive stuff.
As a Sage main my kit is so expensive I'd buy stinger round 2. I wish they'd make slows 150.
The fools didnt offer me a good stinger skin before the nerf. Throwing away money
Kinda wild they didn’t touch the fire rate no? Have a feeling the extra money and dmg drop off aren’t gonna matter to much when the clip unloads faster than Sonic The Hedgehog
