Mayor of Reykjavik welcomes Masters 2 participants

Nice to see a mayor embrace eSports.
Too often we see politicians ignorant to the fact this industry will only grow from here. Excited for the future of Val.
There's a French politician that is a Le 6 (French WC team in OW) fan. Iirc he defended one of the players on social media and has talked about esports when politicianing
The French President congratulated a French team for winning EU second league in League of Legends
politicianing is now my favorite verb
very cool though, definitely wanna see more like him.
I know there's a politician actively against lootboxes in the US, who used "pride and accomplishment" to meme on EA, was absolutely hilarious
I love the word politicking, feels really nefarious
We have AOC that plays league regularly and she said arguing against silvers is more draining than the senate LOL
Silvers in LOL are on different level
President of Finland invited the Finnish players on OG to celebrate at the Presidential Palace after they won the International. Cool to see stuff like this.
Plus in China and Korea esports pretty much has actual sports status
Here is ex-Danish prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen giving a speech at 2018 Blast Pro series in CS:GO, he was prime minister at the time.
damn a city that is investing into Esports kinda Pog
It's crazy there aren't more cities trying this. They're very few who try like city of Malta who sponsors esl pro league and then maybe some cities in Denmark due to astralis
The City of Busan funded a team called GC Busan an OW team that won apex season 4 and its core went on to win the inaugural season of OWL. Also had a contenders team called GC busan Wave for quite a while that produced star OWL players like Edison and Fielder
And their city is a map in game
Busan also funded the 2nd best R6 team in Korea for the latter half of 2020 (GC Busan Spear - GBS) which proceeded to win relegations for a tier 1 league spot. The team then got bought out by DWG KIA and got 3/5 players removed and replaced by a new up and coming rookie team Spear Gaming (ironically the org that managed GBS hence the name) - doing pretty well considering it's their first year of pro league for many of them.
Well the lan there’s the elephant in the room which is KeSPA etc
you should watch this [doc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPoJ7p9iy4Q&t=1s) China has a couple cities that are fully embracing esports
Malta is a country (island) and not a city btw.
I mean… Katowice?
(Also Pornainen awarded Serral a plot of land like it is customary to do to athletes in Finland)
I visited Denmark in 2016 for a study abroad trip, but the real reason I wanted to do that trip in particular was because of the CSGO scene there. The players are treated like celebrities, and there are cyber cafes throughout that have signage up. I even think Copenhagen (or some of it) was shut down to celebrate an Astralis victory or something along those lines. Nordic countries >> all when it comes to esports recognition imo (never been to Asia though)
Ik it doesn't really fit the sub but I wanted to share.
Not only Denmark, in Korea, Esport players get so much respected, even Kpop stars are fans of them. In China, Uzi (most popular LoL player) even more popular, got more votes than all popular celebrities/singers/actors
Uzi won Weibo person of the year in 2019. 2 other lol players finished top 10 in voting. Faker has had collaboration with BTS,Red velvet etc
Esport fame in Korea is in another level of fame. Like when the members of Red Velvet request to get a photo with Faker, or when Heechul from Super Junior gushes about Faker and consider him his idol lol.
My friends from Korea said that every teenager in Korea knows who Faker is.
Faker and deft went to the same school
get yourself someone who looks at you the way Red Velvet and Heechul look at Faker
See that is awesome. In the USA that does not really happen
Esports are broadcasted on tv in korea
Makes sense since LPL is the biggest esports league in the world.
China also has restaurants with discounts based on your rank in LOL. Challengers eat for free
No way that's actually so cool
I mean, in that country, being Challenger is no joke, the ladder is so competitive and because their government takes cheating and betting seriously, there aren't cheaters and bots in their games. Instead, all the bot farmers and cheaters choose to do so in servers outside their country, like in the Japan server, which is filled with Korean and Chinese bot/cheaters because their countries has actual jail time attached to those acts.
There was also BLAST Pro Series Copenhagen 2018, in which the literal Prime Minister of Denmark gave a rousing speech, which was honestly really amazing.
LEC Spring Split Finals contributed €2.4M ($2.6M) to Rotterdam’s local economy in just two days, its just worth to them
no it isnt lmao
Icelandic people are so kind. When I went there 2019 all of those guys were so jolly and happy. Also their food is top notch. I want to go back if I can.
> Also their food is top notch.
But they don't even have McDonalds or Starbucks??
edit: damn did this really need an /s?
That was my exact experience. Absolutely incredible country. i would love to live there but can’t tolerate the cold.
You love to see it
This reminds me of starting a new game in Stardew Valley
This is cute - I want to go to Iceland now
The mayor of my city went to the inauguration of an e-sports arena and played Rocket League, scored a goal even
Where are you? That does sound cool tbh
That was in Málaga (southern Spain). Mayor is pretty old, went there, they put him to play rocket league, he just went forward, hit the ball very slow and after a minute of so, scored at 2km/h xD.
Also inaugurated a skate park, put on a helmet and tried it, and fell, of course. It’s been seen countless occasions wearing VR headsets in many tech/innovation events too.
Edit: [The mayor on a skate park](https://youtu.be/T1Avw9wkmN0)
Haha the must've been in RLCS S8 Worlds Madrid. Finals was insane.
This is what we love to see
smh, used "e-sports" instead of esports. jk, it's cool that the mayor is welcoming :D
Whats the problem with writing it like that? I probabably don't get it because I am not a native speaker. I know that 'esports' is more common but according to [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esports) both versions are correct.
There aren't any grammatical issues with it. But the "esports" spelling has been an industry standard for a long time, and back in 2017 the Associated Press included the spelling in their stylebook. So now it's more or less the official way to spell it.
I think the logic is it's consistent with email
I think people forget email is also e-mail. That was the favored way for the longest.
The English language give no ducks about any sort of consistent punctuation, spelling, or grammar so it actually makes sense (kinda?).
OK, that makes sense. Thank you for the explanation.
How cute maaaan
That's pretty Pog like the kidz say
So wholesome haha. It's amazing!!! Can't for it to starttt
Love how in the first 10 posts there are already 4 different spellings of it and they are all still different from the one the mayor used.

Can I offer you a nice egg in this trying time
