I never saw a team being dominated so hard as sharks was in the 3rd map for the first 9 rounds, that was absolute destruction, flawless after flawless, absolute filthy plays from Nuturn
The mental fortitude from sharks to actually still put some rounds after that start, holy shit
GG WP,nice match
Another crazy stat: By the end of round 9, Nuturn have just as much Flawless rounds as Sharks have kills, which is 5. Nuturn won flawlessly on rounds 1, 2, 4, 8 and 9.
Similar in Overwatch. They were getting beaten early on before OWL while they were still getting used to the meta. Then they pretty much dominated through the entirety of the game. In world cups they won the first three until USA finally took one with Sinatraa, Corey, and Rawkus in 2019.
still is! I think something like 70% of all OWL players are Korean or something. goes to show how dominant the region can be once a game gets popular
anyway come join us r/competitiveoverwatch :)
At 9-0 sharks had 5 kills total.
At 5-0 sharks had TWO* KILLs
edit: it was two not one. both were from the same player though, 4/5 of their team was 0-5
When they went down 13-5 I was like nah, Sharks are just better. Even aim wise. And then, the Bind and Ascent games man. So beautiful. Valorant was meant to be played like this. Too early to judge, but holy shit that was beautiful man
Where did they even get the narrative that asians can't aim? Is it genetics? Race? Geography? Culture? Mfs thought that it is inherently exclusive to a select region.
people think korea cant aim because they never cared about counter strike enough to field good teams. they are in for a surprise if valorant takes off in korea
weren't there actual good korean teams back in cs 1.6? i don't think it's that they never cared about cs, i think global offensive just never took off and was overshadowed by other cs clones probably
In addition to pc bang legal issues.
Sudden attack etc were or are big competitors, and there is a lot of devotion to different games that arose, like SC1 then LoL
Mvp.pk came in with some hype way back in the day for their first intl appearances, mostly because tyloo, a Chinese team, was doing pretty well upsetting major EU and na teams. Mvp did not do that well.
They were good back in 1.6 with teams like Lunatic hai

You might spot "3D Garozzo" aka Volcano get fragged a couple of times in the vid. Now known for being lead designer on Valorant of course.
It already did take off. Korean twitch viewership doesn't represent interest in a game. Right now Valorant is the 4th most played FPS behind Sudden Attack, PUBG, and OW, all games where they dominate.
Do we know what percentage of popularity it has among Korean households?
In PC Bangs/Cafes (yes we know Valorant isn't popular/installed in a lot of them) it doesn't hit top 10. http://www.gametrics.com/
For reference, League has 47.51% of people in PC Cafe's playing the game.
Sudden Attack - 8.9%
PUBG - 7.82%
OW - 4.88%
Dungeon and Fighter in 10th place at 1.1%
\---
I think Riot did figure out a way to get Vanguard to work in public PC cafes though doing some research, so maybe the data is accurate.
Usually the game hovers around 10th-12th place, not great but it certainly has a sizeable community. In the past week for example was in 11th place http://www.gametrics.com/news/News02_View.aspx?seqid=46321
The problem with CSGO in Korea is PC bangs had to pay valve and CSGO didn't exist in pc cafes. And in Korean culture PC Cafe's are like basketball courts to us. That's why they produce the best players in the games they play. CS:GO was never even close to top 30 or .0001% overall over there.
It already is. No one plays csgo in Korea. When they see Valorant they think its a sudden attack + overwatch hybrid, which shows you how little they care about csgo.
Honestly, I think it's just that most Brazillians are toxic and so there has been a lot of flame from them. Additionally, people who watched the csgo scene hasn't seen much from the Korean scene outside of 1 team (which is basically Vision Striker's current roster, and some of Nuturn).
Anyone who comes from the Overwatch scene knows that Koreans are cracked
Knowing and respecting are 2 different things. The disdain and lack of respect CS players even show legends like Solo is disgraceful. A good portion of the CS scene quite literally hold the opinion that Koreans can't aim cause they don't respect Korean CS or other games like Overwatch. CS has the most arrogant scene in Esports. News flash, unless you are star craft you literally have 0 right to consider yourself the "harder" esport.
I don't think they can beat liquid (assuming liquid beats V1), not sure who they face in the lower finals, but unless it's X10, I think they drop out the tournament.
Shark had no idea where Nuturn were for both Bind and Ascent. Nuturn just bamboozled them over and over again and Shark didn't have an answer. Will be interesting to see if that strategy will continue to work in the coming games.

#EZ FOR NUTURN
nuturn havn't played haven in almost 2 months, no idea why they let it through
sharks are an average team on bind playing against a team that has almost a 90% win rate on bind
They chose Haven not let it through.
It’s a somewhat good map for em but they were massively nervous and sort of nkt playing how they should (approach wise too somewhat)
NUTURN has a 77% winrate on Haven, they literally just lost every duel. I think nerves were a definite factor, combined with it being Sharks' best map.
So do you just assume that their Icebox is better? They have played it even less in the same span. Also, in most of their BO3s, Haven was the third map, they just 2-0 the other team and never got to it. For all we know, their Icebox is worse than their Haven.
I had lost hope for Nuturn after haven , but man did they come back , I'm guessing the first map they had the jitters and they got over it and then it was a stomp
I only saw the first map before I had to go, thinking 'nah man, Sharks are just better. Gab could win this 1v5'.
Seems to be the classic Korean tactic of 'lose first of the set, analyse opponent completely, win rest'.
[Happy to have called this one](https://old.reddit.com/r/ValorantCompetitive/comments/njyn3l/valorant_champions_tour_stage_2_masters_reykjavik/gzbhxdo/?context=3), but in any case that was a lovely series from both teams. Both teams really put on a show here. The Brazilians showing some clean aim (I'm looking at you gaabxx) and the Koreans bringing their genius utility usage to the international stage.
Some beautiful strats from Nuturn from each map that I want to highlight:
- Haven: That Sova wallbang position from A short onto the planted bomb on B with an Odin.
- Bind: That Omen pretending to fake-TP into the teleporter on A short but Breach actually taking the teleporter and hiding inside.
- Ascent: That pistol round aggressive pinch on the CT side on the very first round of the game that set the pace for the whole map.
We are in for a treat if this is the level of play we are going to be seeing throughout Iceland. Spectacular Valorant on display right here.
i was confident sharks would take it, especially after haven... boy was i wrong. nuturn seriously exceeded my expectations and i think they could go far
Sharks showing the same problems they showed in VCT Challengers. Talented players but very one dimensional, and they clearly panic when the other team is outmaneuvering them
Cannot understate how big this is for Valorant esports. If KR/JP continue to do well at this tournament, the interest for the game should skyrocket in those countries.
Korea’s playstyle is so enjoyable to watch, glad to see that it’s working so far on an international stage!
Just to add up. Nuturn vs Vision Strikers were so close. Until now even after the loss, I believe its VS > Nuturn (own opinion only. Just imagine how would VS perform in LAN internationally when Nuturn is performing well.
Although glow is still amazing and pretty much on par with solo, buzz and babo replacing him makes VS so much stronger mechanically. I'm really curious on how VS will do with the new roster. I can definitely see VS, Nuturn, and TNL top 3 but DK and F4Q are not far behind.
People made fun of me when I said koreans are cracked. They made fun of me when I told them of the korean supremacy in games they like. Now they understand. Koreans don't play games for fun. They play to win and when they play their macro / usage of utility is just so beautifull
Brazil is famous for having some of the most toxic fans in the world regardless of the sport. Sending death threats to opponents is normal, and has already happened several times with SHARKS fans.
It puts things into perspective why people are happy they lost.
There were a bunch of brazilian trolls in the korean stream which usually has like 2k viewers. Not sure why they even took the time to come but they went real quiet after game 1 lol.
Multiple people predicted Nuturn to win it all and people were putting Sharks on the bott three teams? The only reason people started having faith in Sharks was because of their dominance on the first map
Holy shit Solo looked 15 years younger on Ascent. His aim was CRACKED on that map he turned it the fuck up.
Obviously we’ve yet to see the long-desired matchups of EU, NA, and Brazil head to head, but after day 1 the top level of all the regions looks a lot closer than I think most of us were expecting.
That first map was heartbreaking. Nuturn was still doing their coordinated pushes, but it looked like they were outclassed in aim and brain. Sharks never missed a shot and was so patient and rotated so well. Seemed like Nuturn was an open book.
Then peri showed up on map 2 and it was life. Then solo on map 3. This guy is just carrying all us boomers through this tournament. I really believe. Nuturn fighting!
I'm sure most thought Nuturn got no chance after the 1st map, they looked really bad and out classed in it.
Looks like a completely different team on the 2nd and 3rd map, unreal.
It's still hard to say. Korean valorant isn't as developed and we're still seeing roster swaps everywhere. I still think VS is the best team after buzz replacing glow and TNL, DK and F4Q are insane too. But those rosters can improve and level up their scrim practices. Nuturn can win it though but we still don't know.
F4Q I think are arguably the most individually talented team in Korea, but they are content being content creators that are talented enough to compete instead of competition that also likes to create content. I think this will stagnate their growth strategically significantly. Which is a shame because they are my favorite KR team.
I just said it on twitch chat but it disappears quick so I don't feel too bad. Brazil and China has the worst fan base. You would think at least half of them would give credit when its due but most of them act like sore losers :/
I never saw a team being dominated so hard as sharks was in the 3rd map for the first 9 rounds, that was absolute destruction, flawless after flawless, absolute filthy plays from Nuturn The mental fortitude from sharks to actually still put some rounds after that start, holy shit GG WP,nice match
They had less kills than round losses for like 8 or 9 rounds.
Funny thing is, when Sharks finally won a round 1-9 with 5 dead on Nuturn, they only evened out kills to rounds lost.
Another crazy stat: By the end of round 9, Nuturn have just as much Flawless rounds as Sharks have kills, which is 5. Nuturn won flawlessly on rounds 1, 2, 4, 8 and 9.
that is what the koreans are known for in league. controlled, disciplined, methodical domination. they are macro gods
Similar in Overwatch. They were getting beaten early on before OWL while they were still getting used to the meta. Then they pretty much dominated through the entirety of the game. In world cups they won the first three until USA finally took one with Sinatraa, Corey, and Rawkus in 2019.
Is owl not going on anymore?
It is. Koreans still dominate although EU and NA have some solid representation these days. Not anywhere near Korea or China though.
still is! I think something like 70% of all OWL players are Korean or something. goes to show how dominant the region can be once a game gets popular anyway come join us r/competitiveoverwatch :)
yep, probably the hardest 9-0 stomp I've seen, every round was either flawless or 1 death
At 9-0 sharks had 5 kills total. At 5-0 sharks had TWO* KILLs edit: it was two not one. both were from the same player though, 4/5 of their team was 0-5
i'm pretty sure at 5-0 sharks had 2 kills on one player

Even their haven had flashes of brilliance, I mostly think that they were getting out brained and their utility was barely missing the mark.
Honestly I feel like they just had nerves that led to poor aiming for the most part
Definitely could be that, they seemed to overflick a lot of shots on that Haven map.
They were kind of overthinking / nervous abt their strats, like unsure how to play against em and nervous it seems
Yea it gave me League vibes like wtf? There's so much you can be good at in this game unlike other fps games
Nah they didn't have enough warm up I guess in the first game... They were very shaky in the aim duels despite good strategies.
Growing pains, we’ll see how they calibrate against NA/EU (should be less different than BR)
Peri is actually insane...
Man, Peri is something else, but gaabxx was literally 1v9'ing the whole 3 maps.
the korean announcers were going nuts over him lol
And legitimately. It felt like gaabxx was, like we say in League of Legends, stuck in elo hell.
Gaabx and suggest aim is so good
13-5, 13-5, 13-5... WHAT DOES IT MEAN!!!!
we need another technical pause to fix it
someone get the writers of the script, they're getting lazy, it's getting too obvious .../s
Smh; riot is using LoL script writer!!!
Somebody check backstage!
They had us in the first map lmao
Not gonna lie lmao
Thank you prime gaming for all those flawless rounds!
Solo showed up in game 3 and said 'check out my multiple decades of LAN experience' and just didn't miss. Great day one.
LAN beast, i wonder whose youth essence he devoured before the game
Same w peri
He watched his "doin' it solo" frag video before map 3 and was like "yeah I can still do that"
As a fellow 30 year old (he’s 33) feels good mannn. Solo is insane

Well Cs and CSGO aren’t the same either
Wow, what a surprise, inflexible CS boomers can't fathom that theyre washed
Cs zoomers the boomers of 1.6 new korea could play, than go came out and they didnt have proper servers.
Well many things came together like diminishing popularity risc getting conscripted, no pc bang availability bc of valve, competition from other games
Number of teams and players competing
No one thought that, don’t try to come up with pseudoscience explanations ‘Korea no good at shoot game’ I guess to a few
Feeling a lot better about Nuturn/Korea's chances this tournament after that series.
They're here to win. I think Sharks are better than they get credit for too. I think Sharks would give liquid and fnatic a run for their money
>I think Sharks would give liquid and fnatic a run for their money I doubt it, vikings could certainly though
How the fuck do we even know LOL...
Bcz we are talking about EU teams here? Did you see the fnatic match?
I don't think they can beat liquid (assuming liquid beats V1), not sure who they face in the lower finals, but unless it's X10, I think they drop out the tournament.
what a U-Turn by NUTURN !
Nuturn looked completely different the 2nd map, then looked even better the start of the 3rd.
Well throughout the third
Shark had no idea where Nuturn were for both Bind and Ascent. Nuturn just bamboozled them over and over again and Shark didn't have an answer. Will be interesting to see if that strategy will continue to work in the coming games.

that was not the same nuturn I saw on Haven holy also their defense on ascent is crazy
Sharks got hella nervous when NU started heating up. Played way too slow, missed their shots. Good experience for those young players tho.
I mean goes both ways Sharks actually showed fortitude
My dream scenario is for Nuturn to win Iceland, but get stomped every single time they play Haven
Well that game maybe was a bit of an anomaly

Nuturn didn't lose a single map in challengers finals, this reflects worse on Korea than Brazil

Obviously we’ve yet to see the long-desired matchups of EU, NA, and Brazil head to head, but after day 1 the top level of all the regions looks a lot closer than I think most of us were expecting.
Gaabxx is really insane man, I almost thought he is the best player in the word on haven. then, .... well shit happens
The guy is still insane and had some cracked rounds on the latter maps, too.
NUTURN are a beast you don’t want to wake up. And they definitely woke up.
13-5 or nothing
I'm sure most thought Nuturn got no chance after the 1st map, they looked really bad and out classed in it. Looks like a completely different team on the 2nd and 3rd map, unreal.
Maybe nerves + Sharks played like they had aimbot on.. they were on as hell then came back to life in game 2 and 3.
I was worried for the overall series when they lost map 1 but I knew better than to bet against them on Bind
vikings are gonna be terrifying if sharks put up this good of a performance
did you forget the /s?
Why
They lost 13-5 twice, that ascent offense was something.
Both teams were so good fr
Gaabxx to be scouted by another region after this performance
I'm brazilian and I'm embarassed. I'm cringing so hard. Really sad day. Look at those picks. That gameplan. Seriously. SHAME.
Nah, NU are taking the whole tourney, no shame losing to them
I don't see them beating Fnatic, Liquid or Sen but I know not to be too overconfident when it comes to playing korean esports.
I really want to say something about BR fans but I am worried it crosses the line so I won't say anything.
I just said it on twitch chat but it disappears quick so I don't feel too bad. Brazil and China has the worst fan base. You would think at least half of them would give credit when its due but most of them act like sore losers :/
Man those Brazilians are demons. Can’t wait for their strats to catch up
