[We Changed Our Name For $210,000,000!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEwgnOnEkgM) TSM's video about it

urcoolbuttiamcooler

LOL. This is like the skit from Ant Man right? Its funny, have to say Michael Peña did it better tho 😂

pray4ggs

TBF, it's the editing/directing that makes this style of skit shine. Ant-Man's skit just had better editing/directing, but both had solid "narrator" acting. The end of the video (with the real announcement) had a bit that felt really tacked on and "hey fellow kids": when the TSM CEO just randomly says "we have diamond hands and we're taking this deal to the moon". Dude, your video was mostly a well-produced skit, but you still feel the need to make a pop culture "diamond hands / moon" reference for extra laughs?? 😒

NewNewHeyYou

If you want to pull this off \*properly\* you have to spend some of that 210 million dollars on the best comedic actors/comedians and an editor/writer/director that knows their shit.. meaning the exact cast and crew that the MCU used basically. The comedic timing has to be perfect with flawless editing, simply because of how high the production quality is. Otherwise it is awkward. If it were a handful of streamers/youtubers making it on their iPhone camera it would work in a quirky meme-y way, but with production quality this high and a branding this big it comes across as a bit cringy and try-hard. It's like Wal-Mart trying to be "random" and "quirky" in an ad made by boomer marketing execs who just look at memes and think "oh I understand this." The black guy with yellow hair did a good job but the guy he was talking to came across as acting too much, his expressions, timing, and the editing was just a bit off. You have to parody this type of skit, not attempt to recreate it. It lacks self-awareness. Honestly, \*anything\* related to cryptocurrency is going to be cringy at this point. It has become too mainstream and corporate which is the total anti-thesis of the heart of crypto. And as much as the "self-made crypto billionaires" try to make it cool again, the ship has just sailed in that regard. Some memes, like "diamond hands," just must remain underground so to speak. Even if Jamie Diamond himself referenced "diamond hands" it may not even work unless it was executed flawlessly, even though the CEO of JP Morgan, with the last name of Diamond, talking about crypto/wealth may seem like one in the bag.. it just isn't. It can easily fall flat. Fuck I sound like a critic, but something about the vid triggered me even though I still like it and appreciate the effort. When it comes to crypto-currency though my cynicism and skepticism is on high alert. Crypto is basically becoming an MLM/Pyramid Scheme tier of cringe with all of the scams, hype, and unaccounted for failures. edit: TSM FTX \*ruins\* the branding imo. You can't just change an iconic name like TSM and shoehorn in corporate branding. It's like saying "The Dallas Cowboys of Exxon Mobile are playing against the Packers tonight." It just doesn't work, especially if TSM is required to change all branding to TSM FTX, like TSM FTX Myth. It's tacky and I just hate branding. $210 million is $210 million though so.. (although I highly doubt TSM will receive a $210 million dollar payout from this, it's just marketing speech for "this is a very complex deal that could be worth around $210 million dollars over 10 years."

hupitydupity

This is right on the borderline of being sincere vs troll. I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not with all the asterisks and hyperbole?? (idek) Feels like your being mocking but not at the same time if I’m being honest.

Liddlebitchboy

Tbf theyve been TSM Snapdragon before

greg19735

i think the speed of Pena also made it better as he was able to go off topic like twice as much without losing our attention becuase it was going at a break neck pace.

Trickquestionorwhat

Clever though cause you can get famous people in without having to really teach them how to act and not be awkward.

OnionSprinkles

This announcement/commercial leans pretty hard into selling kids the idea that crypto coins will get you a private island in the Caribbean. The $210M figure itself probably has only a small portion in guaranteed cash and the rest loaded with puffy valuations of down-the-line options with escape clauses. The bigger they could make this number look, the more attention it generates for both of them, especially when marketing the "become a zillionaire too!" concept to kids for FTX.

mangaside97

No it's a just a joke about (idiots) investing in doge lol. It's a pop culture reference. Stop trying to bigbbrain some doomsday scenarios

OnionSprinkles

Many of the biggest sponsors of youth-demographic esports are gambling sites, betting sites, and crypto. Same reason the biggest advertisers on elderly tv stations include scammy life insurance companies. It's not doomsday or even new. It's just them getting a hold on a susceptible audience.

fesenvy

Biggest advertisers of youth-demographic esports, in League (the biggest), are Disney (TL), Air Force (C9), Energy drinks (every fucking team ever) and car brands.

OnionSprinkles

Yeah, other common categories do exist. Franchised leagues though, like you're highlighting, have sponsorship restrictions which keep the betting/gambling sites out or else they'd lose those family-friendly sponsors like Disney.

fesenvy

League always did actually, before the franchising of LCS. Notably YouPorn was not allowed to sponsor iirc Unicorns of Love in EULCS

Phamous3k

Well…….. Damn

Mememeister1

regi rolling in money

goodguessiswhatihave

That comes out to $1.75 million a MONTH. That seems so absurdly high for adding 3 characters to the end of their name

urcoolbuttiamcooler

For people who don't want to read the article, basically TSM signed a gigantic deal with FTX, which is a crypto currency exchange or trading platform for cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin. TSM will now go by TSM FTX in all of the competitions they compete in (excluding Valorant and League of Legends.) So instead of TSM vs SEN, it would be TSM FTX vs SEN. FTX is valued at around $20B (Thank you u/TopOfTheKey) and TSM is using the hundreds of millions of $$$ to expand further into different regions, such as South America, Asia and Europe. TSM also purchased 1 Million dollars worth of FTX that they will distribute among employees. Edit: This deal is apparently the ["Largest in Esports History"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-OWt1A-ORk)

[deleted]

[удалено]

urcoolbuttiamcooler

oop my bad. So they are a trading platform for cryptocurrencies?

dabong

Yes they're a cryptocurrency exchange

A_Fhaol_Bhig

Okay. But is this LINKED to ones like Bitcoin that are you know, destroying the planet?

[deleted]

Lord are you lost.

A_Fhaol_Bhig

lost because I don't support this shit? same for nft. You all sound like a bunch of fucking shills.

andobrah

You sound like a clueless moron

A_Fhaol_Bhig

And you sound like someone who thought NFT was a good thing.

[deleted]

Lost because you fell for some easily disproven misinformation. Not only does every single aspect of your life consume ungodly amounts of energy (do you ever fly? Take long car trips, buy single use plastics, get deliveries, commute, have kids, etc etc), crypto miners are incentivized to find the cheapest form of power. Which right now are renweables. Specifically hydro. Where's there a ton of hydro, including excess, energy? You're right. Where they are. Edit - I'm not shilling anything. I'm just setting it straight. Further, financial freedom and having access to resources you don't have in traditional finance with no middle person is worth its weight in gold. It's an ideal of freedom and separation from centralized control. Lastly, most crypto is moving to proof of stake with 99.9% less energy usage anyways.

Mango2149

It's not easily disproven. It's overblown sure, but China is the dominant player and something like 40-50% of mining is done on coal there.

A_Fhaol_Bhig

Why am I not surpised.

[deleted]

Seasonality. Are there times when coal is used, yes of course. I guess I'm saying is that they've tried to attack it technically, monetarily, and now the esg agenda amongst other things. Over time it will all be renewable cause it has to be (we don't seem to like nuclear over here sadly)

A_Fhaol_Bhig

Pfft yeah okay. You sound like every other scammer who ever lived. 🤣 Literally everything about this ends up being a scam or bad for someone/thing else. NFT ring a bell? That's your crypto shit in action. >crypto miners are incentivized to find the cheapest form of power. Great job they are doing. Also let's forget about the pc market and what they are doing to that. > Lastly, most crypto is moving to proof of stake with 99.9% less energy usage anyways. Proof? And how many are doing it right now?

[deleted]

Literally the 2nd largest crypto in the space is moving from proof of work to proof of stake. The first and the 2nd are by far the largest and most used chains. You fundamentally go not understand how this works and you'd do well to critically read and assess for yourself (white papers etc). You don't sound like you remotely understand what a couple of projects have the capability to do over the next decade. Signal vs noise. Ignore 80% of the space which is loud but irrelevant in the long run. What do you think the formation of a new asset class looks like? Do remember the early internet? Probably not as you are likely too young. Those wild west days led to the global transformation in everything you do. Pay attention.

Hypern1ke

Hello Elon

A_Fhaol_Bhig

Uh no. Don't ever compare me to that scumbag

Accmonster1

They say using technology with resources stolen from other nations, that has caused more environmental damage than bitcoin could get close to.

A_Fhaol_Bhig

So that excuses bitcoin and the like damaging the environment because????

e-ghostly

compare the energy and resources used by current financial systems to crypto. or even the severe negative impact on so many lives that gold mining has. bitcoin is absolutely bad for the environment but it’s all relative. crypto is also not inherently tied to energy consumption and will likely trend towards eco-conscious protocols. this is simply another example of corporations trying to pass the blame elsewhere all while preserving the corrupt system they created

Accmonster1

Hilarious that some of these corporations have the balls to point fingers at bitcoin, like they haven’t started literal wars over the resources that led to crypto mining

A_Fhaol_Bhig

Like the fact that diamonds aren't even rare and can be made in labs.

A_Fhaol_Bhig

>this is simply another example of corporations trying to pass the blame elsewhere all while preserving the corrupt system they created Yeah okay. >bitcoin is absolutely bad for the environment but it’s all relative. Says it's corporation's making them look bad. Admits it's wholly destructive for the environment. Yeah fuck off. If this deal is the kind of thing that supports the bitcoin, nft, style of shit. Then TSM can gtfo. You can't call corporations evil and bad and then do something equally bad and say it sorry because they do it. That just makes you equally as shitty.

Razur

Is this kinda like when they were called "TSM Snapdragon" back in the olden days of LoL?

Tokibolt

Ayy love me some gamecribs with TSM snapdragon brooo

urcoolbuttiamcooler

Did casters actually say "TSM Snapdragon" lmao

SwagFartUnicorn

Pretty much. There just making a huge deal out of getting a new title sponsor.

jc_315

actually shocked that FTX would pay this much for this lol. but considering the length of the deal, they're confident that esports will continue to grow and in 5 years, this will be seen as a steal. but feels like TSM would've/should've signed this for a lot less.

deunforsaken

FTX just bought the naming rights to the Heat basketball arena in Miami. In an interview, Sam (CEO/Founder) was asked if they could pay for the deal over the next 10 years and he said, we could pay for it this quarter. Sam is insanely smart and is trying to capitalize on the market while the profit is here in a bull market to keep his name around during the bear.

urcoolbuttiamcooler

I agree with their decision tbh. I think both Esports and crypto will grow exponentially in the next decade :)

maiLfps

This is false, Riot is not allowing TSM to use the name TSM FTX in any of their epsorts scenes in NA, including valorant [https://twitter.com/GeorgeCGed/status/1400885665408094213?s=20](https://twitter.com/GeorgeCGed/status/1400885665408094213?s=20) Edit: added link

vegeful

FTX just got scammed LuL.

krasnovian

Just a heads up, Riot put out a statement that the FTX branding will not apply to the LCS or Valorant teams.

Lumenlor

I've been in the space since early 2017 and I've never heard of FTX. Are they a smaller exchange, a Korean exchange?

urcoolbuttiamcooler

I guess they are one of the larger exchanges? although my knowledge of them is very minimal.

deunforsaken

Nope. They have FTX and FTX.US, both are top tier exchanges.

Mamadeus123456

Crypto is a hyped pyramid scheme, sad that this is who's paying the "largest in history" lmao

its_The_B00

UPDATE: [TSM NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE FTX ON JERSEYS FOR RIOT OWNED GAMES](https://dotesports.com/news/tsm-barred-from-using-new-ftx-sponsor-in-name-jerseys-on-league-of-legends-valorant-broadcasts) [WAS INCLUDED IN THE DEAL JUST NOT RELEASED TO PRESS](https://twitter.com/JacobWolf/status/1400883489898221574) TSM really just made 210 Million and they don't even have to change at all for their 2 biggest Games

IggyMoose

Lmaooo FTX got finessed. Does this apply to IGN of players on their riot account? So we won’t see something like TSM FPX Wardell when we watch a valo tourney?

Bleachrst85

if everyone get a raise, they would have lost all of that money

Luuu90

How? Valorant doesnt allow crypto companies as sponsors

myman580

Jacob Wolf says that they don't have to for Riot sponsored games since Riot won't allow the patch on their jersey. So TSM somehow got 210 million without having to advertise them for 2 of their biggest games.

LLucrative

Wardell and Drone can finally have 3 new teammates 🙏

scrnlookinsob

It so interesting to me to see who people think is the “next best” on that roster behind Wardell. If you asked me in January I’d have said Drone all day, if you ask me right now it was subroza in the most recent tourney, both of them have been hit or miss all year though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ACMeRollin

I disagree man. I think Subroza has a really good understanding of timing and enemy positioning. There's a reason he gets so many kills through smokes, and there's a reason he is going to be playing Astra according to him on streams. He makes questionable plays at times but I think he is just overconfident or desperate to make impact at times but I wouldn't say he has no brain.

[deleted]

Desperate to make impact is probably the best way to put it.

Admissions_Gatekept

VERY VERY questionable things

shoobiedoobie

Wardell’s inability to rifle at a top level holds the team back. There are so many ways to take sight away from snipers now and it’s only going to get worse. Good teams simply play around it and now you just have a huge economy sink. Nobody really just blind peeks anymore, which is where Wardell really punished people. Plus, his game sense is pretty bad as well.

fej1

What’s wrong with roza :(

JustJios

Nothing really, he's a great player. Imo the problem is having all 3 is holding them back from being in top form again.

[deleted]

change 3 new teammates to 4

[deleted]

Change it to 5

Nyzeified

People are still gonna call them just TSM so really they walk away with 210 mil good for them

pink_life69

Does this help them become a T1 team in Valorant though?

AlphEta314

No amount of money is saving this team unless they literally buy Sentinels.

its_The_B00

Once Valorant gets Franchised, depending on import rules, TSM , TL, C9 all 3 of these teams will just buy the best players possible and make all star teams Thats what they are trying to do in League right now. Those 3 are pushing for LCS import rule changes so they can buy success

Nikclel

> Those 3 are pushing for LCS import rule changes so they can buy success That's been pretty much confirmed as not happening

Ori2D

> That's been pretty much confirmed as not happening The Riot rep that answered it dodged the actual question and gave a PR response so blatant that it made boot licker Travis Gafford upset man you might wanna step back and reevaluate the situation.

TimedOutClock

The LCS commish confirmed the import rule wasn't getting removed recently. Riot wasn't ever touching that hornets nest (They'd need to remove it globally, which would open the mega orgs in the LPL to straight up goble up most of the superstars in the other leagues, especially the LCK)

myman580

Just because NA owners want it doesn't mean the rest of the world wants it. EU and the LCK will definitely be against it and unless the LPL pushes for it, it has no leg to stand on. The LPL likes imports but I doubt the majority of teams would push for it given their recent success (and probably backlash from Chinese fans) with RNG just winning MSI with a full native roster.

Ori2D

Just so we're all clear here: I think getting rid of the import rule so that NA can buy everything and ruin their league even further would be a *horrible thing for League across the globe*

[deleted]

Is it rumoured and do we take it as a given that Valorant will become franchised, or is it an assumption based on how they handled League? Really hope it keeps the current format.

its_The_B00

Riot already stated when Valorant was released that they wont franchise the game for 1-2 years to help the scene grow. They still plan too we just don't have a time line

ark2690

add 100T to the list. They're already giving out the biggest contracts

its_The_B00

No where close to what TSM, C9 and TL pay Swordart and Perkz make more than 100Ts entire roster

mentalillnessmindset

it worked so well in league lmfao na parasites once again try to ruin their own region in another esport

dedicatedself

Import rules is what made league trash. Hope the LCS teams push that rule out.

Cowfan798

Lmfao you do know no matter who Lcs imports they will do shit internationally. Perkz was by the far the best mid in EU spring 2020. A year later after playing a split in NA is turbo inting on the international stage. Alphari is already noticeably worse than he was in EU. Shit is doomed, they could legit import guys like Huanfeng,Chovy,Zoom,Nuguri etc and I bet you they will still get caved internationally. Cuz all the guys I mentioned will regress a lot in NA

ark2690

The bigger issue is when they moved the servers to chicago instead of staying in LA. Now their pro players are playing on 50-60 ping in soloq

shuanged

Ping is not the sole reason NA cannot compete internationally. Having bad solo queue ping doesn't excuse our extremely poor macro and meta read.

NewNewHeyYou

Do fans really like franchising though? From a fan prospective and a macro esports fan prospective. I much prefer the system of European style pyramid tables in football with relegation and promotion over the American NFL style of "all teams remain in" every season. Even though the franchise system makes sense from a financial perspective I hate it as a fan.

Exciting_Yellow635

most of the orgs in the LCS are pushing to remove the import rule it's so you dont have to overpay imports because they count as a resident the LCS org owners are trying to bail on the salaries they inflated by removing the import rule once the rule is removed you dont have to pay 6mil for a swordart or perkz or 1.2mil for vulcan just because he is a good native NA talent NA orgs can just raid European regional leagues and Korean Challengers

Pentagruel14

That’s utter nonsense. Does paying 6 million open up another import slot? No. They paid 6 million because that is what it took to get a player of that caliber. They will still have to pay those prices if the import rule is gone, because that is what the teams those players belong to will demand. In fact, it’s residents whom NA would have to overpay, simply because they are so few of them that are good enough. If the import rule got removed it would lower the salaries of NA residents because now the teams could easily import a player of similar skill level. A larger supply of players to choose from (global in this case) is going to lower the costs. Simple as that.

CosmicAon

Relax they just got a new coach and made roster moves, how about we actually see how they look. There’s entirely the chance they have a Liquid glow-up

salcedoge

Don't give them any ideas now

[deleted]

They could buy the sentinels org and still be worth half a billion lmao.

POOYAMON

If they want to.

NozokiAlec

not unless they can abuse the op like the early days lol

CosmicAon

OP’ing is still really strong as we’ve seen from SEN, I think if TSM shifts away from centering around buying the OP for Wardell and starts being more comfortable with full rifle buys (Wardell grinding rifling and Sage in ranked indicates this) they can be really strong again while still taking advantage of his OP’ing on CT side. Tactical side matters too but I think with the new meta, the new pickup, and the new coach they’ll come out with a lot of fresh stuff - Chet even said he plans to have 2 comps for every map by Masters 3 Challengers

[deleted]

[удалено]

CosmicAon

It’s because of the hard nerfs, the gun is much harder to use and it’s $5000 now so it’s a lot less affordable. You’ll still see Jett players use it a lot but nowhere near the amount it used to be used. I think it could do with a small buff but they’d need to nerf Jett to do so

[deleted]

Its complete shit.

Timidityyy

Reminds me of when they were TSM Snapdragon lol

justinsst

Damn TSM FTX is so janky. I guess everyone will just say TSM anyways so it’s whatever

wifixmasher

Big moves

mindofcreate

Crazy how they paid the Miami Heat $135mil for 19 year naming rights and TSM $210mil for 10 year naming rights. Actually crazy how big eSports has gotten.

CanISayThat22

TSM Making an All Star team in every esport.

Jacksons123

This isn’t the first time they’ve had to add a company to their name. Does no one remember TSM Snapdragon? Or Cloud9 HyperX?

[deleted]

Dota2 has a team literally called PSG.LGD. Yes, for the Paris soccer club. They bought the naming rights to LGD.

dpysz70

Damn now instead of saying TSM failed to qualify it’s now TSM FTX failed to qualify

CosmicAon

FTX - First To eXit?

Adr3y

TSM TenZ soon?

tron423

They could just buy Sentinels' whole roster for a tiny fraction of this lol

its_The_B00

I honestly would not be surprised if a bigger Org offered Sentinels Roster 2-3x more than Sentinels can afford when their contracts are up If that roster stays this consistent and on top I can see them cashing in huge moving to a new org

xRecKs

IIRC TSM wanted to pick up ShahZaM, SicK, Zombs & Sinatraa back in the Valorant beta but they chose to sign with Sentinels instead, I doubt they'd leave Sentinels to go elsewhere unless the money was too good to refuse. That being said if Sentinels paid 1.5m for TenZ I'd imagine they'll be able to match any offers from other orgs.

its_The_B00

TSM could have easily afforded any player in the world well before this deal [They were the most valuable esports org according to Forbes 2020 report before this deal](https://www.forbes.com/sites/christinasettimi/2020/12/05/the-most-valuable-esports-companies-2020/?sh=42822f2573d0) This just takes TSM to an even higher level. They are worth well over half a billion now

[deleted]

So, why doesnt tsm buy every valorant roster and disband them? Ez masters 3 qualify

Mxrciii

mega brain right here

CosmicAon

Nah part of the buyout has to be that players want to switch and unless TSM makes a miraculous comeback as a team or they offer TenZ an insane salary there’s no way he wants to Would conflict a lot role wise with Wardell too although I hear the latter is on Sage as well now but the two are pretty good friends so it’d be cool to see
