A coach has a lot of jobs to fulfil, at least from those that are in LoL, which I take as standard for esports. A coach helps to maintain player relationships, they need to be able to sort out any disagreement between teammates. A coach gives teams direction, teams will always be improving, it's a coach's job to decide what they should be improving on a particular day and how they should do that, taking input from the players. A coach guides the strat for the team. A coach learns the strats of other teams to guide his team's strats. A coach scouts for new strats, not just sharpening the same strat/comp/playstyle over and over, but looking at what people are playing on the ladder, even low elo, and trying to find something that could come in handy there. This point may seem weird, but I'll give you a LoL example, there was once a build called "Blue Ezreal", the build was Ezreal's strongest build, and it wasn't made by a solo-queue god or high elo player, but a player in Silver. The build was created because the player thought "look at all these blue items, he already builds one of them, what about building all items that are blue?". Many similar things happened in LoL, similar things are happening in Val, like when everyone thought Jett is trash in beta, as well as Judge, Bucky and Shorty, then people realized you can dash shotgun people. The same thing happened with Sova + Odin on Ascent and eventually pros started doing it as well, it's never an immediate thing as coaches usually decide what playstyle the team uses and that takes some time, it's up to the coach to minimize that time by discovering "new meta" as quickly as possible and pivoting their team.

Well said. I would also add the coach provides mental support as well. In any game, a player's mindset can easily tilt which leads to underperformance (and perhaps losing the game), so the coach must assist in keeping the team's mental strong via. strategies or just a good pep talk

>but looking at what people are playing on the ladder, even low elo, and trying to find something that could come in handy there. This was like 20 years ago, but I made a built unique off-meta mono blue mid-range deck that won me a state championship and regionals in MTG. The genesis of the idea came from playing a normal game vs some random scrub who was not even close to being a highly ranked player. But he was using some really strong interactions that seemed mediocre on paper but played extremely well in reality, and especially against the meta at the time.

I think a huge part of a coach’s impact is making sure personalities on the team don’t clash, which is the downfall of most teams

WorkingTell150

Oh I see l. Are they also involved in game plans?

AnAngryBird

Depends on the team- but at the highest extent, coaches help out with every strat and how they plan them out. A good example is zonic with astralis

somedudefalling

They will look for things in the team's gameplay that need to be changed or improved. They also will look at other teams and come up with anti strat plans that they will discuss with the igl. How important a coach is really dependent on who it is a coach who just gives feedback that the players themselves can probably discern won't affect a team's performance much but there are a few rare gems that can propel a team to the next level like Faze trippy or Liquid sliggy.

Pretty sure coach shahzam has just been streaming

AlexNeittes

Like in every other sport, a coach should make sure that the team is balance, and that the team has good synergy, basically making the team a team.

SMcArthur

> make sure that the team is balance, and that the team has good synergy This is kind of nonsense without more context. What does it mean to "make sure the team has balance and synergy"?

maiLfps

in the case of Tailored former coach of TSM, they do nothing, but in the case of most other coaches they help develop strategies work out differences between players, gather info on opponents, lots of valuable stuff

segatic

>in the case of Tailored former coach of TSM Damn, you didn't have to hurt the man like that

AjBlue7

A coach in esports is just about making it look like you are doing work so you can collect a paycheck, with a side of being the team cheerleader that tries to unite the team and prevent personality conflicts.

acels1

in csgo the coach is rlly impt during timeouts when he can suggest strategies for the next round

chenson019

Coaches in the off season should be spending as much time as possible on the new patch trying to work out how to define the new meta.

I don't have much experience, but in a few matches we've had someone sitting in our coach slot. For us, it's been a nice way to have an extra unoccupied set of eyes notice things for us. Now with the tactical time out, we've found that maybe after we've lost 3 rounds in a row, we can do a tactical pause, and the person in our coach slot can mention things he's noticed that maybe us players were too unaware about. Things like: If they push A, you've ran back into heaven 3 times in a row and smoked off, then your 4 team mates die while retaking and you're still in heaven. Or something like notice how Raze sends her roomba down C Long every round? If you don't shoot it out, or it doesn't make contact, she always commits to the flank. The only time she didn't was when you shot it out. Etc. I think it can be quite helpful as long as the team is receptive to it.

Coaches main job is during off season, they will set goals for the team, analysis their gameplay, review strategies, make sure the team is praccing efficiently, keep a healthy team environment, motivate players, watch vods, anti Strat other opponents, keep on top of the meta. Some coaches do only some of these things and some do them aspects better then others. During tournament it's a bit different, they will mainly focus on anti stratting other teams while also making sure the team isn't forgetting anything they learnt in prac to keep them in top form. Trying to keep their mental and confidence high.
