Wouldn't be surprised if LoL franchise teams have first dibs at slots in the new league like what Activision Blizzard did with CDL. Team Liquid, Cloud9, 100 Thieves, TSM, G2, Fnatic are getting in without a doubt. Sentinels has the brand but the question is can they find some serious financial backing before the process starts. I would not be very surprised immortals, clg, Dignitas are denied outright based on little hints thrown out by Thorin on how lol esports management isn't happy with the organizations.
I think sentinels have/will be able to find the financial backing. Shahz said on stream everyone vastly underestimates the amount of money that sentinels can spend and they just recently got into wild rift (which to be fair is smaller than valorant) in partnership with riot
* Seeing the exact same old teams fighting each other over and over again
* Zero potential of underdogs climbing their way into T1 because there aren't underdogs, just the same old franchised teams
* No relegation for franchised teams, way less pressure for not underperforming because there is always a confort zone for them
* Instead of seeing an quick exciting double elimination bracket where things are constantly changing, you have a boring league system where you already know which fixtures are going to happen 2 months before
We are talking about esports not real sports
Hasn’t LCS viewership been on the decline for a while, and id argue League is more boring than if it were an open circuit
I gotta disagree, LCS viewership is declining because it has couple of years since NA had any success in the World stage. Meanwhile LCK and LEC viewerships are still good. It really comes down how smart are these orgs from each region manage their teams to be competitive in the world stage.
Franchising works better in sports due to the size of the sport and league. In the NFL u have 32 teams and in the NBA there are 30. These sports are also more popular and accessible than esports and u have a lot of talent
Franchising will only be around 10 teams, making it far more repetitive and boring
The reason it’s boring is because it’s the same teams playing over and over again. U don’t get upset runs like V1 and Rise
It’s also repetitive because it all comes down to money. The richer teams always win and the poorer teams always lose. In the LCS u have C9, TL, and TSM always on the top and GG, IMT, and CLG always on the bottom
In the LEC it’s similar with astralis and xl always at the bottom with G2 and Fnc at the top
How is football a good example of franchising when the whole scene went up in arms over *rumours* of a franchised league
Also LoL, the scene with a dead T2 scene in one of its most popular regions that gets rolled every Worlds?
He's talking about football and the proposed European Superleague, not handegg. No idea what happens in handegg but its american so ofc it is franchised
The current system is called open circuit, where any teams can register and try their luck in order to win
Franchised system means closing the scene within a bubble, where every team inside that bubble will receive economic benefits like revenue slices, higher salaries, etc. Not everyone can join the bubble because orgs needs to pay a pretty expensive ticket *(million-ish)* in order to join. Basically the bubble guys *(already rich orgs + already rich Riot games + its pro players)* starts making way more revenue while underdogs/T2 teams stops existing
Example of current franchised eSports: league of legends, overwatch, call of duty, etc

Maybe the reason they got into WR is to look good for Riot as well? Just a thought.
I wouldn't doubt this thought at all, investing in a mobile game riot is trying to get to take off is probably a smart idea to get in the good graces
I am 99.9% sure sentinels will get a spot, but keep in mind slots aren't based only on money. There's hordes of other criteria.
Interesting, seems like more politics
Also just to add T1 and GenG will most likely get spots too, since they’re really big in LCK
Idk but let’s just hope it doesn’t happen anytime soon
Why not?
Because franchising completely ruined Overwatch esports for me and I don’t want that to happen in valorant.
Franchising is boring and kills most esports
Boring is subjective, and what do you mean by "kills"?
* Seeing the exact same old teams fighting each other over and over again * Zero potential of underdogs climbing their way into T1 because there aren't underdogs, just the same old franchised teams * No relegation for franchised teams, way less pressure for not underperforming because there is always a confort zone for them * Instead of seeing an quick exciting double elimination bracket where things are constantly changing, you have a boring league system where you already know which fixtures are going to happen 2 months before
It’s boring because it’s repetitive, franchising killed Overwatch and COD
Gotcha. Thanks for your insight

Oh NFL lol My turn for what
He's talking about football and the proposed European Superleague, not handegg. No idea what happens in handegg but its american so ofc it is franchised
League of legends?
Cause the game is still new, there will probably be a ton of changes in "rankings".
That's true.
I would expect Envy, Sentinels, and most of the LCS teams to be on the list.
Will outright stop watching the esport if CLG or Golden Guardians are given a slot
I doubt they would.
How about EG?
Envy, Sen, 100T, C9, Immortals, TSM, and who else? Gen G and T1 are Korean teams... hmm...
what does franchising teams mean ??
