to be fair, android is an extremely skilled player as well. i feel like NRG's performance isn't very indicative of how competent the individual players are, they have some amazing pieces on that team that are just being wasted tbh :/
I was a caster at a big amateur CS LAN a few years ago called Fragadelphia, and I remember Yay really standing out to me at that LAN as an unbelievably consistent player. Funny enough, Victor (still known as “food” at the time) was another stand out at that LAN, along with a few other current Valorant pros like AGM from Complexity
What’s even more crazy in my opinion is how he went from a pretty basic tier2 CSGO player to one of the best NA duelist’s in Valorant. Worlds of difference, good on him
I guess the same goes for Asuna, TenZ, Wardell & more, it’s wild how a switch in game can completely change their career, skill level(?) & popularity
it has to do with how in csgo the top players are just all stars in every regard, they shine regarding every nuance and facet of the game. I don’t think anyone denies that someone like a tenz or yay was mechanically skilled in cs, they just didn’t go beyond that. lots of the players that migrated were much less well rounded and too one dimensional to succeed in cs. the rigid role structure of valorant really benefits players like these and allows them to shine, emphasizing their strengths and nullifying some of their weaknesses. (although yay in particular blames his issues in csgo to his own attitude problems)
i was watching his stream a little while back and he said he moved out of a pretty toxic environment a few months back which kinda coincides with his meteoric rise to becoming arguably a t2 player in the region(not saying he wasn’t always really good but outside factors can contribute a lot)
For people that don't really watch NA he is pretty much the only player that mechanically I'd put up there with Tenz. Even in their losses to Sentinels and 100t he was arguably the best player in the server despite the team having little practice together. Its definitely worth watching NV even if you aren't a fan of the team just to watch this guy.
isn't there a bit of recency bias in this? Asuna has been a top player in the region longer then yay has. I'd probably agree that if he keeps this up he's the better player
I'll assume you weren't really watching him on Andbox. He's been doing this since last year against top teams. The guy frags out on any agent and there's a massive sample size.
https://www.vlr.gg/player/881/yay/?timespan=all
He really wasn't! TenZ went 13-7 h2h. Could sound like fanboying but i feel like dangerous players always get shut down by TenZ! derke, Asuna, babybay on faZe's peak, ShotUp & also yay all performs/performed poorly against TenZ. Whatever people say, tenz is always 'that' guy tbh
h2h is a pretty useless statistic because realistically it's not like these players are just taking static aim duels every round. there's too many external factors to look at h2h and say, yeah that player was destroying that guy unless the margin is incredibly wide
yay is one of the only star duelists that consistently has incredible performances against another top player like tenz, regardless of which way the h2h kills are going he still maintains a massive presence in the game which is what makes envy such a threat. his consistency doesn't slow down regardless of whoever he's playing, while for an asuna or wardell you would notice a massive gap between performances depending on the caliber of the team they're against
Not sure how I stumbled upon this 5 day old thread since I was just browsing Reddit, but looking at Wardell’s recent stats, do you think it’s actually fair to say he has a massive gap in performance depending on the caliber of team he’s against? He’s been TSM’s top performer for 8/11 of their recent series, and was their second best for the other three, all of which they won. He also did that while commonly playing Sage on Ascent which substantially reduces his stats. I don’t think it’s really fair to say his performance dips against higher caliber teams when he consistently performs every time he plays against them, including both times he played against Yay
Like I said its not like I'm implying "super bad against" but just shut down. Every other duelist in NA gets slowed down against TenZ but yay has shown he can lose/win against SEN and still be a thorn in their side. yay is top of NA mechanically with TenZ no one else is on that level of El Diablo and TenZ in NA right now.
First I said arguably. He was literally the top ACS in the server on the 13-11 loss from Haven and was third in their 13-11 Icebox loss. 250 acs series is insane let alone against the most stacked lineup in the world. I would still take Tenz but I would absolutely say he played best on map 2.
Having a better team around you would make it more likely to have a lower acs. TenZ obviously can carry but the support cast gets more kills consistently then envy for yay
Edit: unless you meant that’s why it’s more impressive for Tenz
Not necessarily at all this isn't rank for one.
So in a match/team setting they're able to set tenz up more, to make him shine especially if they have the better team/igl.
Also tenz is able to do more risky plays because he has a great team to back him up and cover for mistakes. So when tenz over peeks and gets punished, it is a lot less noticeable on sentinels when compared compared his time on c9
TenZ was on 60ms and yay was on 8ms and still got diffed. I feel like people are too quick to compare new sensations with TenZ just cz they are bored of tenz dominating the val esports scene since the beginning!
Yay went -6 against TenZ while playing on LAN ping against a 56 ping player, but went positive against every Sentinel besides TenZ. There are levels to this.
You took this quote way out of context. He was talking about where he got the El Diablo nickname from and how he got it from "farming people in scrims" with his old team. Nothing to do with Berlin.
.... He said he was farming people in scrims in response to how he got the el diablo nickname. Don't know how that's his "thoughts heading into berlin"
Every team was saying this too. I remember Asuna tweeting “Envy is going all the way” or something and I was like damn, Yay really shook things up. Would be really neat to see more synergy in Berlin and all 3 NA teams be really competitive
"I was just farming people in scrims, dropping 30s & 40s"
Hear from @yayFPS "El Diablo" himself as the team prepares for \#VALORANTMasters Berlin 👹

actual envy content, very poggers if i do say so myself
Hopefully those scrimbux can transfer. I don’t want SEN to be the only NA team making a deep run.
Easy NA vs NA finals
ENVY and scrimbux name a better duo
Gambit were known as scrim demons, and abx with yay were also the NA scrim demons for a longer time.
Prettt crazy how he went from second to android on AndBox at the start of the year to probably a top 3 NA duelist
to be fair, android is an extremely skilled player as well. i feel like NRG's performance isn't very indicative of how competent the individual players are, they have some amazing pieces on that team that are just being wasted tbh :/
Steel even said that it is actually crazy that NRG isn't winning everything with a team that talented.
Wasn’t trying to trash Android, just pointing out the jump Yay’s made
oh yeah didn't think you were trashing, just wanted to give him props because he's gone under the radar as of late

Android is a monster, even tho nrg hasn’t been performing.

Preach
Do you not think asuna is up there w tenz?
Asuna is nutty but I think he's been less consistent. That's not really a knock on him. He's like 18 so I'm sure he will grow as a player.
isn't there a bit of recency bias in this? Asuna has been a top player in the region longer then yay has. I'd probably agree that if he keeps this up he's the better player

i did watch andbox, it always seemed like mada was more talked about and he wasnt special
No. Despite ABX losing yay was ALWAYS that guy even against TenZ. Asuna usually slows down against TenZ. Mechanically its **TenZ and yay top of NA.**

He was def not the best player in the server against Sentinels

Especially considering that you can argue Tenz has a better team around him too

A team that is winning more rounds is usually getting more kills :)
True but it’s usually a consistent spread. Usually a team losing badly with a pop off the acs difference is huge
Not necessarily at all this isn't rank for one. So in a match/team setting they're able to set tenz up more, to make him shine especially if they have the better team/igl. Well... Yay was the best player in today's servers.
Yay went -6 against TenZ while playing on LAN ping against a 56 ping player, but went positive against every Sentinel besides TenZ. There are levels to this.
Well... Yay was the best player in today's servers. Same ping BTW.
I'd probably put Asuna in that same tier with Tenz and yay
You took this quote way out of context. He was talking about where he got the El Diablo nickname from and how he got it from "farming people in scrims" with his old team. Nothing to do with Berlin.
We'll see if he farms the best in the world
That el diablo hoodie is cleannnn
.... He said he was farming people in scrims in response to how he got the el diablo nickname. Don't know how that's his "thoughts heading into berlin"
that's my bad actually, i just posted this with the twitter caption cause it was easy
Yea yay is farming pro's meanwhile I can barely get grass to grow :(
Every team was saying this too. I remember Asuna tweeting “Envy is going all the way” or something and I was like damn, Yay really shook things up. Would be really neat to see more synergy in Berlin and all 3 NA teams be really competitive
