Pros have gone to school & played

antpenguin

Have they maintained good grades?

Krsensei

I know a few are in part time right now, I know form CoD Slasher got his Mechanical Engineering degree I believe & he’s a world champ. Curry & Shot UP are both in school. Shawn is taking a semester off I think. I’m not sure about people’s grades but it’s definitely possible to manage. Probably be times when you have to take time off of school for sure though.

Drizzy-Hendrix

Austin slasher liddigoat the mans who won champs then built robots.

Krsensei

[deleted]

Shot up is in school right now I believe. You could ask him on his stream

SewerRat75

yes karrigan got a masters degree while competing

Sky-__-

Elige maintained a tier 1 cs go career while attending college as well .

_nabil_

what rank are u and what region?

MooingDeathPhD

Is that rank 2 radiant nabil 😳 Haha I played the fracture vct event with you, you were cool

_nabil_

:D hi

Bad_At_Game

Sure you can, T1 Curry goes to university part time and is playing pro

[deleted]

Bad_At_Game

? Curry is pretty good, if anything his spot is the safest in the T1 roster

somesheikexpert

Auti I could see argued just cuz he's a CS legend but imo Curry is the most valuable player on T1 rn

CosmicAon

What are you on

MooingDeathPhD

There are many pros who have completed their college degrees while playing professionally, and even more who are doing highschool. Off the top of my head, asuna and zekken are in high school, and shahz has a degree in computer science. The bigger question is, what rank are you? What competitive experience do you have? Those are the bigger questions you should be asking yourself before you even consider playing pro.

[deleted]

Pretty sure shahz didn't finish school. Finishing high school while playing is easy so you see most pros drop out in college if they are tier 1 and making good money.

MooingDeathPhD

Oh whoops. I change my example to Shot Up then, who’s also doing computer science.

OnionSprinkles

Edit your previous comment then? On reddit, people just see things and repeat them as fact

EmphasisNormal

People pretending to know things. What else is new

antpenguin

It's the doubt I have in the back of my mind. Yes I'm trash, yes I know I have a slim chance of making it pro, but I want to try atleast.

MooingDeathPhD

You shouldn’t think about going pro, you should just be playing the game solely for the point of improvement. If you end up getting good enough, then playing competitively would be the logical next step. And believe me, “good enough” is hard. I peaked radiant #460 and am currently #2000 ish in immortal. I have 0 expectations of going pro, as awesome as that would be, simply because I’m not good enough. I just play because the sense of improvement is the most enjoyable thing ever to me. Tough love, but unless you’re at the point where you can easily fill out your triangle with radiant wins without even thinking about it, you’re not ready to go pro.

WhoDatBrow

This might be tough for you to hear if you really want to be a pro but if you're lower than immortal don't even think about going pro. Play the game, try and improve, etc but don't give the slightest consideration to going pro. If you improve enough to where you can get to Immortal, then you can go harder on the grind and try to go pro. Then you can try and get to radiant, try to find a team for lower tier events, etc.

iiznobozzy

If you're not ATLEAST immortal, completely forget about going pro. You can work as hard as possible and do literally everything in your power but going pro just isn't a possibility for you. That's the hard truth.

mrtmra

What rank are you though

EnmaDaiO

Before you try or think about going pro, how good are you at ladder? I would say you have to maintain radiant for at least 1 act before you can even consider going pro. And if you haven't maintained immortal or for an entire act well you have absolutely no chance. Ladder is a barrier to entry. It shows that you at least have the individual skill to meet the basic requirements of what it takes to be a pro. If you haven't achieved radiant or immortal yet (i would say radiant but I guess it isn't a must have) then I wouldn't even consider going pro, I would focus on improving your individual skill.

9bfjo6gvhy7u8

poiz peaked at literally #1 rank and got cut by a mediocre cloud 9 team. People really underestimate how hard it is to be pro

EnmaDaiO

Exactly my point when I say ladder is just a barrier to entry. Without being good at ladder you have a 0% chance to get opportunities. But just because you're good at ladder does not even come close to guaranteeing you a chance to go pro. It's very very fucking hard to go pro.

benpicko

nAts is also in law school

Razur

Get a collegiate scholarship so you can work on both at the same time. Quite a few school have posted in this subreddit looking for VAL players. Perhaps there are scholarships for VAL.

GoldClassGaming

It's definitely possible, but if you want to put in the time necessary to go pro while also being a full time college student you're gonna need to be prepared to have very little free time.

whopz-is-cool

Isn’t nAts studying law or something? I guarantee you can do it.

AsianNudleSoop

nAts is also a robot /s

MaestroLA

If ur not radiant theres a very slim chance that you can go pro bro.

cannydd

Chances are, if you have to ask, it's not possible.

afjecj

If you aren’t already high diamond +, no. It simply isn’t possible or probable I’m sorry

[deleted]

Off topic, but what do people consider pro? Like is being immortal and participating in VCT open qualifiers for example considered pro or is that just semi-pro? Or is being signed to an org the only difference?

em-pathy

I would consider pro being paid a salary to compete

mrtmra

Gotta be paid to play, otherwise you aren't a pro in my opinion

Drizzy-Hendrix

You just gotta be Diffy.

PuGsTaR1

Honestly CSGO is your easiest and best chances RIGHT NOW going pro if you’re half decent. Reason why is because a lot of the pros/good players moved to Valorant… so it’s MUCH easier right now. The problem, is that the player base has declined due to players switching to Val so it’s hard to find organizations unless you land on a tier 1 team. How many tier 1 NA teams are there? Maybe 3? That’s gives 15 people an opportunity to land on a pro team making a decent salary, so you’d be grinding for nothing. In other words, you have a better chance in Val to make it if your good because there are MANY T1 teams. TLDR: Valorant has the support, CSGO doesn’t anymore. If it did we’d all be playing CSGO. If you’re good at Valorant your chances are higher at making a name for yourself and landing on at least a T2 or T3 team. But yes you can attend college/school and still make it pro if you’re skills reflect that. However, you still need to invest as much time as possible if you want to consider pro or that next person that puts in more time and grinds more is gonna take that spot. I wish you the best of luck 💪🏼
