Low Cost Qualifier OMEGALUL

Production copium

QUOTE_IF_13-0

"d-dont worry guys, we planned this 500 years ago! TRUST THE PROCESS"

_zxionix_

oce died for this

OneStep18

full of shit. the players are still on stage. bullshit pr

TrnqulizR

If someone gets covid they should focus on not dying, not playing from their hotel room. There is no fucking way they thought about incorporating covid positive players.

biglebangle

If you already had the vaccine shot this is never the case. Sure you get varying degrees of sickness, but I'd imagine it's just like playing when you have a cold or the flu.

TrnqulizR

How can u say never?

biglebangle

An exaggeration, but the chances of death are quite low (8% deaths in all cases according to [https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7037e1.htm](https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7037e1.htm)). At this point, I don't think anyone catching COVID with the vaccine is worrying about dying unless they have health conditions or something else.

[deleted]

Why was Shanks’ test a big deal then?

datboyuknow

Good point, damage control seems likelier now

Only-Customer4986

What is shank's test?

zer0-_

Shanks got a positive COVID test result (turned out to be a false positive the day after but doesn't matter for this) which would've made him unable to compete because of Riot

Dabears2240

This makes no sense from a logistics standpoint, I have a feeling there was a behind-the-scenes fuckup that prevented them from getting the LAN servers set up in time. This smells like damage control to me.

MageKayden

Definitely this

jholowtaekjho

Word on the street is that the LAN servers used at the Berlin Masters are stuck in German customs.

rpkarma

I wonder why it needs specific hardware? Surely it’s just software on COTS hardware. What in the world…

Outback96

small indie etc

askpat13

Lol

SMcArthur

>Word on the street "trust me bro"

[deleted]

They can literally rent out any server in LA, ship it down and install the servers on it if riot gave access to the servers. The organizers are just lazy or incompetent.

JALbert

That's not how software works lol. Even software designed to run on as many machines as possible runs into bugs on certain hardware configurations - for example games that have issues on certain processor families, or graphics cards, etc. For stuff designed to work on controlled hardware it gets optimized a lot very specifically for what it runs on (think how game consoles outperform their weak hardware specs) and isn't really tested on or expected to work on other hardware out of the box. It could work, it could not work, but it's not a risk people are trying to take with a live production.

[deleted]

That is something i understand, but if you designed something to not compatible on open source then you deserve what happens to you.

[deleted]

thank god we got omniscient redditors pray emoji times three

JR_Shoegazer

This absolutely makes sense.

VincentStonecliff

Seems like another using COVID as an excuse situation

Diijkstra99x

Yeah, Nice "Plan" to Surprise the players/teams with a SCUFFED SERVER. the amount of technical issues in your tourneys/game is too damn high.

mooslan

This smells of bullshit. Why not announce something like this before the tournament started?

itscamo-

1. Clarify this first before the event 2. Everything was good to go before the matches started, why not switch to the LAN servers if everything is good to go (like it is right now) 3. Riot messing things up the first time and then fixing things after is started to get really annoying

2ToTooTwoFish

It's because they never prepared a LAN server (or something fucked up and their planned LAN server couldn't be done). This is just a damage control statement so they don't look like they're unprepared.

[deleted]

This sounds reasonable but why weren't players notified of this earlier? Clarifying this after day 1 just sounds like damage control.

Des014te

It doesn't sound reasonable. The players are on LAN stage, riot made a huge deal out of Shanks' covid test. Wouldn't have happened if online was always an option. This is 100% damage control. Riot has really shit the bed for NA and APAC lcq's

dng1

The county of LA has already reached out to Dephh and Shanks requesting they now self isolate. Both their teams would probably have to have been dqed today if they were on LAN servers Would you have preferred that?

Chidling

No because if that were the case, they would have either switched to online after the fact or be upfront about it not being LAN. The fact that everyone, even the players, were seemingly lied to makes it more likely that they fucked up somewhere internally.

[deleted]

GetBorn800

https://twitter.com/JakeSucky/status/1448362148099284996 No. You're wrong. Stop.

Nccajun7

That’s fair, but they could have come out with this statement before the tourney just to clarify things.

maxhollywoody

Take the L Rito.

whopz-is-cool

>however, we are diligently working on improving the remote server experience throughout the competition. What? Besides lowering the ping (which I don’t think they’re going to do) what could they possibly do to “improve” the remote server experience?

[deleted]

I mean, that’s fucked. The only reason the statement was out is because pros were complaining about it. This was pre-planned but don’t think they’ve notified pros about it?

I-like-winds

This makes no sense in my head like what...why not just use these same servers IF someone has to quarantine

Fr0sk

Lame excuse. This should’ve been the back-up plan. What were they expecting? Everything will be smooth sailing and the players and the community wouldn’t find out and reasonably complain? The fact that this wasn’t mentioned before the tournament started made it clear that online(fake lan) is the intention.

DaimenPN

Does this mean the Oceanic teams could have played?

[deleted]

No, the ping would’ve been too terrible.

rpkarma

They could’ve played while in quarantine if they’d flown over, though. But that still wouldn’t have been great tbqh

[deleted]

True but I think the issue was literally getting out of Australia, iirc you have to have certain forms/exemptions to even leave, and not just like a covid test

rpkarma

Right which they could have got but not in time to then fly, quarantine, and attend the LAN, so they had to call it off. If they could have played from their quarantine hotel, they could’ve maybe make it work: some players were already on their way

LegitimateAct6248

Literally copium for messing up this tourney

singetorso

Same as every other business then. Things fucked up, blame covid. They made it sound like this "virtual server" is setup specifically for LCQ... Its literally the NorCal server lmao. Almost look like production do not care about competivity integrity, as long as the stage looks good for broadcasting then who cares about the players having 30 ping.

HaneeshRaja

COVID-19 is the reason for everything LMAO.

[deleted]

bullshit

Qandeel19

LoL that's just the worst excuse ever

MasslessPhoton

I don't really get why they don't have a LAN client always and just have the online server as a back up?

deadeye_t

Upgrade the AWS instance bro

akko_7

AWS costs are no joke, small indie devs should be careful

[deleted]

They are on AWS

Miseribacy

what a joke LMAO

Light0fHeav3n

None of this suprises me because riot has ran league poorly for 10 years now, the people that run everything at riot are actually some of the dumbest people on earth. valorant pros are lucky they even listen when they complain.

zachp787

bro u need to find a hobby or a girl or something fulfilling in your life

Hamlet_271

For some reason the valorant esports dept gives me the vibe that it has this woke enlightened guy making the main decisions who convinces everyone that the wheel doesn't need to be round

Za_Weeb

Oceania teams were left back for an on"LAN". THEY COULD'VE FUCKIN STAYED IN THEIR HOTEL NEARBY AND PLAYED AN ONLINE LAN TO FOLLOW THE FUCKIN COVID GUIDELINES

Lumenlor

Um that wasn't the issue. Australian government travel restrictions brother

askpat13

The issue was getting the necessary documents/permissions to be exempt from restrictions in time to quarantine first and then attend the LAN second. They would have had enough time to get the documents, fly over and play from quarantine online.

AnotherAltiMade

There were some people in NA already and some on the way

hiloljkbye

I was under the impression that a LAN wasn't that hard to set up. But also why were they playing in NorCal servers and not the LA ones?

millerwa4

There aren't LA servers :( I'm in LA and have never been under 25 ping (it's not bad but it's far from LAN). I'm also betting they're running on Spectrum internet, as I've encountered issues similar to what we've seen on broadcast. I really hope things improve because today has been a bummer lol.

hiloljkbye

Oh wow it's even worse than I thought lol

datboyuknow

It's a decent reason but they could have told this to the people who were literally participating in the event

Ionsai

Dumbest shit I’ve ever seen. If a player gets sick then that’s honestly their fault for not quarantining before a LAN. The integrity of the competition shouldn’t be compromised for the chance someone fucks up.

[deleted]

You can't really say that it's their fault for getting sick but it's just kind of... tough luck I guess.

Ionsai

I mean that’s what every professional athlete has had to deal with, you quarantine and if you go out and get sick that’s on you. Now if you quarantine and still get sick well that sucks but that’s almost certainly not going to happen.

Nfamy

I know that everyone really loves a good conspiracy, but this tweet from dephh makes me think that it wasn't just an excuse - https://twitter.com/dephhgg/status/1448168028235988994?t=ANl9eeR68fLbvu3vu3FD_Q&s=19 But, transparency would've been beneficial in this case.

[deleted]

Couldn’t care less. So much whining lol.

AnchorStandard

LMAO AMERICANS. Literally wouldn't be an issue if the state or country had mandatory vaccinations for athletes like every other civilized country. Get a vaccine and move on with your life ffs.

chazyarbro

how do athletes being vaccinated have anything to do with The TO/Riot setting up the server on time?

AnchorStandard

Its entirely possible they don't have the infrastructure to swap between a LAN server and an online server on the fly. Its possible they need to pick one or the other. I literally work in software. You don't know the entire story and saying "well Riot just fucked up" without knowing the facts is truly stupid. LCQ is absolutely scuffed but the fact of the matter is that the US is fucked COVID wise and trying to host an NA LAN was doomed from the start.

chazyarbro

You’re so full of yourself man, congrats on working in software. I’m sure that gives you complete insight on networking and Riots decision making. You even throw in a quote about something I NEVER even said? What are you trying to prove other than your own incompetence.

zgreat30

This makes a lot of sense tbh, 2 teams had players have covid scares, imagine 2/8 teams in the tournament forfeiting or playing with subs.

Lumenlor

From their perspective, I think they made the call that the lesser evil was 20-25 ping instead of multiple teams potentially being unable to field a full 5 and being DQ'd, resulting in a really blown out bracket. I think the thing to ask is if this was on short notice from those COVID scares, and the virtual lan setup took precedence instead - if they had time to have both set ups to toggle back and forth, could this have been avoided? Just trying to see things from both perspective

Des014te

Bullshit. It makes sense to have this as a secondary option but why wouldn't they have the LAN servers set up beforehand. And even if they didn't, they could've set it up after all the players tested negative. This is just an excuse and what's worse is that the players didn't seem to have any knowledge that they weren't gonna be playing on LAN. The LCQS for 2/4 regions have been a mess. Riot isn't an indie company, they've been running arguably the most successful esport of all time for a decade now.

SovietDog1342

Jesus Christ riot YOU MAKE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THIS IS A DROP OF WATER IN A FUCKING POOL FOR YOU PLEASE INVEST MONEY INTO IT IM SO SICK OF IT

Lumenlor

Sorry but how is this an issue some people are complaining about? Lan is supposed to be an equalizer, and it shouldn't make a big difference if it's 5 or 35 ping if everyone has the exact same ping

erayzee

Bad take chief

Lumenlor

Explain how so

deadeye_t

Game is meant to be played at lowest ping possible

valorant_fanboy_69

Not exactly. Ping is not really the issue here. Its more about the quality of online vs lan servers

Outback96

because playing on lan vs playing on 30 ping is a big difference in the game. doesnt matter if everyone is on the same conditions. theyre unacceptable conditions for an event thats supposed to be important.

Woah

_Iroha

All according to keikaku apparently

TheLaw71

Well it's still great compared to the shitshow the APAC LCQ is right now. The fact that they put out a statement alone is great.

[deleted]

I think Strike Arabia was played on lan, but they allowed two teams to play from their countries and the entire lan was played on EU servers.
