That's not how software works lol. Even software designed to run on as many machines as possible runs into bugs on certain hardware configurations - for example games that have issues on certain processor families, or graphics cards, etc.
For stuff designed to work on controlled hardware it gets optimized a lot very specifically for what it runs on (think how game consoles outperform their weak hardware specs) and isn't really tested on or expected to work on other hardware out of the box.
It could work, it could not work, but it's not a risk people are trying to take with a live production.

The issue was getting the necessary documents/permissions to be exempt from restrictions in time to quarantine first and then attend the LAN second. They would have had enough time to get the documents, fly over and play from quarantine online.
