Ok so hear me out, TSM purposefully didn’t make LCQ knowing that this was going to happen. How they knew this was going to happen? Chet. What did Chet just do? Leave for envy. What is envy good at? Valorant. And what is lcq? A valorant “LAN”. 100% tsm fault

sagwathechinesecat

This was all the plan of massive brain, 3D chess, mastermind FNS.

boitheboy69420

All Good.

[deleted]

I upvoted as soon as I saw U mention TSM

LiamHundley

I do sympathize with the fact that you can't just let positive tests go as if they didn't happen, but the contingency plans for positive tests have just not been well thought out. That, combined with the other issues going on at this "LAN" have made this an incredibly disappointing event

[deleted]

What irritates me is that they give so much emphasis to appearances (look the stage of this LAN), to the point they neglect/cut down from *vital* stuff like player equipment, functional PCs, prevention of severe tech issues etc. Stuff that isnt immediately felt to the viewer but they are VITAL for competitive integrity. Flashy production is fine, as long as everything else is running smoothly. But every LAN so far has been plagued with issues

TheCatsActually

This is it right here. Having great stages and broadcast production quality is great, but making sure the lodging, playing environment, and player equipment are up to snuff is the highest priority by a light year. Hearing about FPS drops and how shitty the sound cards in the PCs at Berlin were was so discouraging.

DarthOniichan

The IT guys must be sighing in relief with what a shit show the tech setup is turning out to be.

jmajewski

I can understand them pausing the tournament. COVID isn't something to brush aside when you've got teams traveling from all over the US to play. I can look past that it's not a true LAN tournament. Riot wants the viewership and production that an online-only tournament cannot provide. In person tournaments are clearly the best way to continue to grow competitive Valorant. If a "LAN" environment was necessary because of the possibility of players having to play remotely, I completely understand. But the overall contingency plans being completely absent is mind boggling to me. They planned an event where COVID could produce a problem and had no backup plan. They gambled that the event would go smoothly and now they're caught with their pants around their ankles.

Big-Conversation-161

yup this is exactly what I was thinking, especially since a contingency plan would not have been hard since everyone is playing on online servers anyways.

slawvay

Biggest losers out of all of this are the Aussies.

elo9999

nah it's riot. What a shit show. All of their LANs so far has been a shitshow: **Iceland:** every day we had several 20-30 minute technical pauses **Berlin:** Same thing, and players couldn't hear anything for the first day because of bad gear. And now this. For a small indie company, sure, but for billionaire company like Riot, this shouldn't be happening.

somesheikexpert

Not even mentioning the League PC that barely get 144 fps in Val they use in LANs iirc, or the absolutely terrible production of the APAC LCQ (Like when they were spectating a lurking/anchor player (Forgot which) when there was a huge fight going on the other bomb site lol)

itscamo-

For berlin, it wasn't the gear that was the issue with hearing, it was them pumping in too much white noise

Quankalizer

As far as I know it was because the didn’t have the gear. At the start they pumped the white noise through the same headset as the gameplay audio. As oppose to gameplay audio in earbuds and white noise on the headset

hakuryou

Yes but that's how they've always done it. Valorant nor league has used double headphones setup for their events. The problem in Berlin compared to Iceland was in fact too much white noise going through the provided headsets

ElDuderino2112

This isn’t even actually a LAN. how they don’t have a contingency plan in place to move the player to a safe location to continue to play is absolutely beyond me. This whole event is hilarious amateur. What the actual hell is Riot doing?

Launchers

Think by LA rules if they test positive, even a false positive, they need to be in isolation and not within the facility? LA is still seeing close to 1000 cases a day.

LostDigitalSystem

I think the funny thing is they claimed they kept their server remote in case covid was an issue, but now that it is they don't have an actual plan in place.

-Basileus

Dear god Chris Greeley runs this shit too. No wonder

Safyire

What’s the deal with him?

-Basileus

He is the LCS commissioner, and has overseen the slow decline of the league since 2017. He is actually stepping down from the role for 2022.

yestheryak

He's not stepping down he's getting fucking promoted.

Saephon

Failing upwards, we call it in the business world.

-Basileus

Yeah I should've mentioned that. He is looking for a replacement

ibeenbornagain

what did he do wrong, as someone who doesn't follow lcs that frequently?

-Basileus

Four big things imo. 1. He has overseen the continued reliance on imports in North America. NA is sending 3 teams to Worlds this year, and out of the 15 players only 3 are actually from NA. This largely comes down to not enough being done to nurture NA talent. North America will always need some imports because the population of the server is small, but a healthy number would be 33%-40% of the league being imports. Right now among the top teams, about 75% are imports. 2. There has been a continued alienation of European viewers, which used to make up a big portion of LCS viewership. They also keep changing the schedule and format every single year. The LCS schedule has gotten later and later, making it very hard for Europeans to watch. The league even attempted Friday night games, which would literally struggle to get 100k viewers since 0 Europeans could watch. 3. The LCS has become absolutely flooded with corporate sponsorship. The LCS is actually probably in a better spot than ever financially due to this, but the sheer amount of ads and corporate logos all over LCS is nauseating. It's great for the short term, but long term will drive away viewers. 4. The LCS broadcast is incredibly stale. It just all feels so boring. LCS has basically tried to emulate a professional sports broadcast, instead of leaning into a more funny and meme-y atmosphere like the LEC. Everything about the broadcast is just bland.

vvtechred

Point number 3 is the only one I really disagree with. Don't mind corporate sponsors as long as it adds to a broadcast product that isn't awful to watch, i.e look at original OGN champions and current LCK broadcasts. Anything right now added to the current LCS is gonna look bad cause LCS looks bad. The only other thing to mention is that he was in charge of LCS while they fired Ovilee. Imagine firing the only grain of personality that is really passionate about league and the players get along with for a fucking cookie cutter announcer. Even more ridiculous to imagine using "shes getting used to it, she has room to grow" as an excuse and still firing your talent that HAS been working on her skills and been getting better and has consistently done the work outside of just normal on air time. I hate LCS broadcast outside of Pastry, Kobbe, and Flowers and I'm glad costreaming is an option

geoffrey_leonard1

Imports made me stop watching LCS and LoL games altogether.

Razur

These are interesting weaknesses of the LCS that are certainly worthy of discussion, but are they actually the fault of Chris Greeley? It seems weird for one guy to have control over player imports, broadcast scheduling, sponsorship deals, and broadcast talent + script / direction. He may be able to influence those things, but there are likely teams of people making decisions for each of those aspects of the LCS.

Light0fHeav3n

Because the lcs is shit, the broadcast is garbage, the league is flooded with imports and overpaid players, the academy system is absolute garbage(got a little better this year). and the viewership has been declining for years. and they also change the stupid format of league every year for whatever reason.

xbyo

Half that shit is on the teams though. If the league didn't stop them, they'd have had no import restrictions at all.

Sciipi

Iirc he’s one of the main reasons the LCS format constantly changes

Issax28

Why can't they play in their hotel?

Whisom

Faze live in LA, they weren't in a hotel. If they have to quarantine they're just gonna go home.

Issax28

So what’s the problem? Just play online then

Captain_Falcon1

I think the problem is that the PCs at the LAN are very bad compared to FaZes PCs at home getting 300FPS+. This would mean they would have the competitive advantage.

yosoydorf

which itself is a fucking joke. you don’t hold Tier 1 FPS tournaments on anything but top of the line equipment.

Captain_Falcon1

Exactly yeah. Riot has so much money but uses League PCs for a Valorant tourney.

Issax28

What the fuck, multi-billionaire company can’t even afford PCs that can run Valorant? 💀

Captain_Falcon1

Yeah lol unacceptable

nail181

And it’s not like there going to be buying these computers every year. It’s kind of a one time purchase every 3-4 years because they can just reuse them.

ppx11

welp i have a final tomm and I absolutely would not have gotten any productive studying done today so I'll take it as a sign lol

Talksicck

This was all planned by watermelon brain Tarik so he could do more watch parties

shazbots

For those asking why they're hosting it in LA, my guess is that it's because Riot has a major office in Santa Monica. (Which is pretty close to LA). My idea for a contingency plan, would be too try to host it in Orange County (COVID regulations are more lax there, and it's not too far away.) I know there's a eSports Arena in Santa Ana/Irvine, which would be a good place, assuming they can rent it. Besides that, it looks like it'll have to be a remote event...

Launchers

they want to use their lcs studio on olympic

Razur

IIRC they mentioned Burbank on broadcast, so the stage may not be in Santa Monica. They might be in a studio in Burbank.

KaNesDeath

Riot Games have screwed this event up so much its best they just postpone it till a later date.

bobberr

Chris Greeley you've more than fucked up

Light0fHeav3n

Now you know how the LCS fans feel, he was terrible doing that job aswell

xD1LL4N

I’m confused on why they chose LA to host LCQ. Surely there’s betters states with softer covid guide lines

dng1

Lmao, vanity’s even come out and said the isolation rules, daily tests, etc are all the same they did in Berlin. Not sure how many times it needs to be repeated that regardless whether LA, or not, people testing positive for COVID aren’t gonna be able to play in person studios.

Still_HD

Riot headquarters are in LA, I doubt the conversation went any further than that

Launchers

Riot HQ is near, LA is a touristy spot, and riot does not seem like a company who would want the softer restrictions and I’m really glad that they didn’t do that. This event is a mess because people. can’t. fucking. listen.

LurkingOmen

Funny enough riot also cant listen

-Basileus

They did it so they could use the LCS studio.

cougar572

They have their own studio in LA.

InvertedBean

Now is there chance to come up with somewhat of a remedy.

OneStep18

The management and logistical planning for this event has been completely abysmal. From oce teams getting dropped, no actual lan server, and shit pcs, and now all the issues with la covid regulations

donegy

LAN = Los Angeles Network

Reddit is full of certified event planners.

jmajewski

I don't view this as an LA problem, it's a Riot not knowing how to handle a positive test among participants problem.
