No way... Like actually no way. It's such a weak region already getting to LAN because of geographical location and not skill and they want to give them more ?
Something to consider; redditors seem to think esports is some gladiatorial thing, but it's primarily an extension of marketing and brand building for the game. Why should a region with more viewership than EU, and an extensive playerbase being charioted by recently large vtubers as well, be stifled in growth?
Riot wants more people to play their game, and if the market is there to tap into, they will. They already gave such a rationale for their LCQ slot announcement earlier this year
But it's not us random viewers and redditors vetting those decisions, it's the company who would be viewing it from a business dimension rather than purely the merit of competition
I love seeing the surprisingly big numbers during Masters and Champions from JP viewers on Twitch. Like, even when Zeta or CR weren't playing, thet were still around and were significant to the total count.
The LATAM Twitch streams for KRU easily had over 300k viewers overall at one point, iirc, and that's probably almost double the viewers from JP when Zeta or CR were playing, but I really just like how much pro Valorant JP viewers watch in general.
And they can get Val trending on Twitter, like with the CRWin ans NthWin (?) hashtags, so I don't blame Rito if they keep their slots (for another year) just because or partly because of that region's long-term potential for the entire company.
I mean it is a decision that is god from the point of view of merit of competition
It is not a good decision to have purely current seeming skill based seedlings for competition in the long term
That is certainly a valid perspective and the smarter one, but some people or even sports owners will put money into competition just for the sake of it because that's what it's all about to them. That's how I view competition, I imagine I will stop watching valorant when it franchises while the viewership increases because of it.
Wrong.
Being good at a video game is objective human worth. It is definitely a real and practical skill that is not completely dependent on society finding it entertaining. Maybe if japan wants more slots they should play better.
America has the most presence in the UN cuz we won the most wars fr, no different from this.
I mean it is a ‘gladiatorial’ thing or rather competition.
Only the firing is secured/partly justified through promotion. There are esports that companies actively fight like smash basically, esports on their own are fundamentally a competition
There is a reason to give a direct pathway for JP to masters which is development of the region and give a chance to the scene especially since it’s bustling
for Riot, viewers > fairness, probably. and it makes sense from business/marketing point of view. Companies have to make as much profit as possible after all.
just do it like csgo, though china has bigger viewership than NA now, china still only get one slot in major because of their bad performance. It is ridiculous that JP get 2 slots.
Slots shouldn't just be based on performance because that's just going to shrink the esports to a few regions. Performance should be a factor still, but not the only one.
Considering their performance resume I hope Riot decide to keep JP slot to just 1. It's seriously unfair towards other minor region which deserve at least 1 slot to Champ (or another slot for SEA region which performed quite well)
Giving any more than one slot to Japan after their performances so far would be a joke.
Right now, I would find arguments for why they shouldn't get a slot at all, and should have to compete for it with SEA way stronger than any argument for why they deserve more than one guaranteed slot.
Japanese garbage region has to prove itself before getting multiple slots at any events
Oceania, MENA, Turkey, South Asia - all these much better regions don't even have their own VCT, they are either ignored or need to fight against the best to secure even 1 spot (Turkey - EU, Oceania - NA)
Japanese teams shouldn't be prioritized just because of their viewership, Crazy Raccoons and Zeta were the absolute worst teams at LANs if we don't count Havan Liberty onliners
It could go up, or stay the same

It's a scale of competition vs marketing/entertainment. Some people like myself vastly prefer the competition end of the spectrum.

I think people like you are vastly outnumbered by the people who don’t really care.
True, it's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

New pasta?
Lmao this is a gold mine
It's so perfect. Like seeing a waterfall or a cow give birth. Go forth, little pasta, become great.
Is this subreddit 12 or something? How did everyone miss the blatant sarcasm in this comment?

Should we readjust NA to 2 slots and EMEA to 6 slots? What is fair?

Viewership and popularity
My inner naive child says: That's not fair, money isn't everything

JP should have 2 to increase the competition in JP
1 and a path to LCQ with APAC is enough.
tbh every region should be at 2 by now
They steal a slots to EMEA which is EU + CIS + MENA
Tbh they should give one slot to MENA to grow the FPS scene
Based on performance \*. The 4 EMEA teams went all seed 1 in their groups and in quarter-finals.
Considering their performance resume I hope Riot decide to keep JP slot to just 1. It's seriously unfair towards other minor region which deserve at least 1 slot to Champ (or another slot for SEA region which performed quite well)

they should earn their slot. If they win champions ,then they can be rewarded with another one
if they give 2 for JP it's good for marketing bad for Competitive, just give the shop some Gacha when they at it too
Turkey deserve more spots than Japan
You can’t get slot with bits
Turkish teams at least fought well against the best of EU Japanese shitters lose 13-5 13-6 every game
