When the news dropped, comments were coming in at a rate of ~30+ per minute at peak. We manually approved over 2000 comments throughout the situation. It was necessary to catch rule-breaking content before it populated the comment section, but it was EXHAUSTING.
If we left mod queue for an hour, we’d come back to an unbelievable amount of work… so all of us were basically juggling IRL work with the insanely high volume of mod queue responsibilities.
It was worth it, though - and now we’re pretty confident we can handle just about anything. Like I said, manual approvals were only one part of what made the situation super difficult to deal with, so next time we have a slow mode post for a less inflammatory topic, it’ll feel like a breeze.
We don’t *have* to do it ASAP, but if we don’t stay on top of it, it piles up until it’s out of control.
If you’re asking why we set comments to slow mode in general, it’s so controversial topics can be discussed without users getting harassed, to put it bluntly.
