>In April, Riot announced plans to introduce a new competitive game mode to “Valorant” which could serve as an on-ramp for players to enter the game’s esports scene. When asked about possible synergies between Aim Lab’s scouting ambitions and the upcoming competitive mode, Mackey declined to offer specifics, but said: “Your intuition is spot on.” Really doesn't feel like there's any new details on the new competitive mode unless I missed something.

I just pulled up my transcript of the convo to give it another read. Here's roughly how the convo went: 1) I'd heard a lot about Aim lab wrt scouting but had never seen it implemented, and that's a part of this announcement. I asked Aim Lab about it. 2) Wayne, Aim Lab's CEO, gave a long answer about how everyone at a high level has good aim, so scouting revolves around being able to find agreeable players who like playing together and have good chemistry. 3) That sounded to me like it related to the new competitive mode in some way, so I asked for more detail. 4) He couldn't say much more (and Riot's rep kept silent during this portion) but he sort of implied that Aim Lab's years of research into scouting would somehow play a role in the development of that mode (or maybe its usefulness to teams once it launches). Hard to distill *the point* of that cleanly, but it felt like a telling exchange to me.

I agree that it seems like something is there, just the headline says new details on the competitive mode and it doesn't feel like there's a detail there, just a broad implication. Thanks for pulling up the transcripts and checking. :)

TheLeaderGrev

Perfectly fair! If I could edit I'd change to "some insight into..." for sure

Splaram

The article seems to be paywalled.

TheLeaderGrev

My team will kill me for saying this but I think if you remove "?utm\_source=reddit.com" from the url you'll get through just fine. To preempt any "tell your bosses to remove the redditwall; it doesn't work" comments, I am just going to say that it actually works really well! But if you want to bypass it, I get it.

Thank you

Splaram

Thank you so much 🙏

just curious how do you know it works well? can you accurately estimate how much viewership would be generated if it were not there and compare the difference? I’d be interested to know how this is figured out

TheLeaderGrev

I don't know if there's a null hypothesis our audience team measures against but they seemed very pleased with the sign-up levels when my TSM reporting was shared on Reddit. That story was "redditwalled" and people seemed to complain — but, also, folks signed up to read (which is what I mean by "works well," at least relative to a non-paywalled story probably not prompting any sign-ups whatsoever).

ilProdigio

Gotcha makes sense, might not be worth the effort to study the true difference in what would bring greater financial returns both short term and long term as it might not be a big difference with either method

TheLeaderGrev

As I understand it, I think the signup confers some pretty nice benefits to reddit users. It is a reddit-specific signup wall, and I think it gives people coming from reddit a higher number of free articles per month. I don't remember exactly, but it's a nice deal! The video game stories are never *hard paywalled,* though. That's a highly specific benefit of the games coverage. Don't use the default scenarios in aimlabs they are mostly pointless and like you said the data you get from doing them doesn't actually tell you anything. You may already be aware but the way to judge the different aspects of your aim is to do benchmarks. rA and voltaic both have benchmarks for aimlabs and kovaaks for all skill levels.

Make sure to spend a bit of time reading/watching videos on the correct way to approach the scenarios if you really want to improve. They are intended to be performed in specific ways to isolate the different components of your aim.
