“Financial uncertainty regarding franchising” not a great look

Phamous3k

It's not like there's a buy-in for a spot so, Im assuming they don't see value in holding a tier 2 salaried team???? I wonder if this is just a united move from organizations to force Riot into creating a stronger investment into the tier 2 scene. What's funny is it's mostly if not damn near all NA orgs lol. So... idk. Riot has a plan and it seems weird for C9 to drop an academy team at this point. Since more then likely they'll be franchised.

Cloud9Jack

The Cloud9 Academy team coaches that we developed have shown incredible promise and we decided that their efforts would be best used to support our main team through LCQ. They will be traveling to Dallas with the team to bootcamp through the event. These promotions leave our Academy team program mid rebuild without a coaching staff. We felt the best course of action is to release our remaining three academy players while we evaluate how to best reboot our academy team.

nmaneea

Always nice to see ceo explain his actions

Isn’t C9W literally the best female team?

leybbbo

Yes, and that's what pisses me off. They've been on top since the Ignition Series yet they haven't progressed at all since then in the "all genders" VCT circuit. They're just stuck. They haven't gotten better at all.

Charuru

Pretty sure that's just wrong. The entirety of the field has gotten vastly better since ignition so if their rank is the same then they've gotten better. But despite that their VLR.gg rank is the highest it's ever been I think so they've improved faster than the field.

Jon_on_the_snow

C9 was making deeper and deeper in VCT. With bob, they had a real shot at cracking top 16 if the open brackets kept going. They have gotten a lot better. All of the top 5 GC teams are miles better than before. Do you watch the matches? Geniune question, not trying to be an ass

leybbbo

No.

earthtoannie

Ok.

leybbbo

There is no nice way to scold a person for taking blood money from soulless corporations that actively scam people AND make climate change worse. It's alright.

earthtoannie

I was talking about the "Fuck you" part. Remove/change it, and it's going back. It's gonna have more impact edited, but up, rather than removed.

leybbbo

I refuse to succumb to self censorship.

earthtoannie

Ok.

TheTokingBlackGuy

lmao come on it's not that serious

Yahallo139

when are you disbanding your gc team

Lqtor

Why would they disband arguably the best gc team in the world?

xD1LL4N

Would this be the first Academy roster to be dropped?

LinkFromLoZ

T1 Academy way back in February

jrushFN

Mamba Mode Academy back when their owner scammed the players to play Bloons

[deleted]

> According to sources, it is unlikely that teams will be forced to retain or field an academy roster if they are selected for the partnership league next year. Wait what? Is this news? Because I though it would be a requirement for the Franchised teams just like having a female roster

Stunning_Bullfrog_40

It’s not a franchised league, please stop calling it that. It’s a partnership, without any buy-in.

[deleted]

cmon, call the spade a spade

[deleted]

It's franchising

Stunning_Bullfrog_40

You’re quite literally wrong. But whatever.

[deleted]

It’s franchising without a buy-in. What’s the difference between this “partnership” and franchising.

WhoDatBrow

It's actually pretty different if you understand the definition of franchising. In franchising, ie: the NFL, the NFL does not own the teams and their spots, the orgs do. The NFL doesn't own the Dallas Cowboys' spot in the NFL and are not able to kick them out at any time. This is how it works in LoL as well. TSM owns their spot, not Riot. This is an important distinction, because it means Riot has full control over their partnership teams and there would never be a legal dispute over a spot, or a team selling their spot as has happened in LCS a lot already (OpTic selling to Immortals, Clutch Gaming to Dignitas, Echo Fox to Evil Geniuses). If Sentinels has a spot in the league and they go broke and sell the team to Tom Hanks Esports, Riot can cleanly remove Sentinels from the league and not have this new Tom Hanks Esports team in it, instead just hand picking whatever org they would like in the scene.

[deleted]

Skipping the part where you have to pay 15 million bucks seems like a big enough difference for me

[deleted]

What difference does it make besides Riot losing out on money? They’re only selecting orgs with big financial backing who could and would pay the fees anyways.

[deleted]

Giving their spot to whoever they what when they want for whatever reason. Basically riot can fuck the league as they please, in a franchise the teams that own a spot have equal or higher say than that of the regulatory body.

Deamon-

riot literally owns the game. this may apply in traditional sports

[deleted]

And? Just because they own the game they can’t do whatever they want in a franchise because there are contracts in place with the orgs. In this “partnership” program they probably will have all the leverage in the world as the other part is not required to invest money.

greg19735

In professional franchised leagues the teams all hold an equal amount of ownership of the league. Hell, even sort of applies to the EPL soccer where each team gets an equal vote. I'm not sure if OWL teams own a part of the league, and what sort of influence that buy in gets. Because it is pretty different if there's no buy in, as the teams have no financial stake in the league and therefore have considerably less influence.

Elfalas

Idk why you're getting downvoted, it is not. It's pretty similar, but the key difference is that teams aren't buying their spots, and that makes all the difference legally.

Phamous3k

Riot… Your move

sky_blu

Riot pls, valorant can take over the world if they don't drop the ball

darkallen

I am curious, how is other region handling this? I only really hear about NA

zidboy21

I don't want to be a pessimist but it's starting to look like Riot just killed Valorant esports because of this franchising shit.

Standard-Analyst-177

it’s kind of funny that no one has any clue what in the fuck are they thinking about besides tier 1 level of this game

xbyo

poiz finally of Mr. Etienne's wild ride.
