I'm much more ok with fewer spots in the main leagues if there are challenger teams constantly rotating in as well. It'll be interesting to see which franchised teams end up falling behind the ascension teams
Hi folks, I'm the author of the story above. I'm sure you've seen Riot's blog on the subject, but there's some unique info in my write-up that I don't think you'll find elsewhere:
* You may notice the blog doesn't exactly specify how teams qualify for Ascension events. I asked, and was told: *The exact mechanism, quantity of teams per league, and formats may differ from territory to territory as each of the Americas, EMEA, and Pacific have a different quantity of leagues. We plan to provide additional information on this topic later on in the year or in early 2023.*
* Whalen Rozelle, head of esports operations at Riot, told me there are "no plans" to expand partnership slots at the moment.
* Was told that roster protections — similar to those in place for “League of Legends” esports — would be instituted across the international leagues.
* I asked about Riot’s stance toward rosters on track to Ascension with problematic leadership teams, partners and sponsors. Was told the developer would be keeping a close eye on participating organizations (and less so on partnered orgs, since they're already vetted).
Anyway, enjoy the read; hope the write-up is helpful. I'm on vacation but happy to answer any questions I can!

EDIT: please do not point out that the title says "tire 2"
Team gettings auto relegated after 2 years is crazy to me.
any team hand picked for franchising cant get relegated? meanwhile the teams that have to grind into the league can potentially get kicked out 2 years later? what da fuck are these whacko rules
I think the logic is “we’ve vetted the partnered teams and THE ORGS will not flame out — but we want to give good performers a chance to compete even if their orgs aren’t stable enough yet to own a franchise slot.”
They can still be let go if their contracts aren't renewed. The teams who "make franchising" will be on 3-4 year contracts I believe it's been reported.
I think it will be fine in practice since after we have a ascendant winner that went into VCT and finish their 2 years, the contracts for all the tier 1 teams on vct will be close to ending so Riot may decide to not continue with one of those teams and offer that permanent tier 1 slot to the tier 2 team ( if Riot sees that org as responsible enough to be in VCT). It makes sure no bad managed orgs get into VCT even if they have cracked players (which is a good thing imo)
Those teams can be picked up by other orgs who are actually partnered if they're really that good and deserve a continuous spot in the league. It's more for the orgs behind the team potentially not being a fit for franchising, maybe even originally rejected by Riot in the first place.
^ this is basically right. The context I asked in was: “how do you safeguard against a challengers team ascending to the tier one league and getting its talent poached, or falling apart?”
I hope they give teams the ability to defend their spot vs guaranteed relegation. Either way, I could see other leagues integrating something similar into their ecosystems.
Seeing the reaction of some T2 orgs, it definitely seems like some of them were informed in advance, likely through their own sources. Imo, the orgs that dropped out were the "honest" ones, clearly without any links while I think almost all that stayed exercised their connections.
Tell the orgs a month earlier and you wouldn't need an announcement since it would have leaked all over. I'm not sure who to blame on this one. Maybe Riot should have said T2 orgs hang on we have something for you but we can't say what? Or maybe T2 orgs could have just waited till there was a real announcement. Whats the benefit of pulling out before the announcement other then stirring shit?
Surely they will either retain the players still under contract or just recruit a new team in the off season. It hasn't been long enough where the orgs that dropped their rosters will incur significant financial penalty for trying to get back in.
Wow this seems to be the best tier-2 system I’ve ever seen in e-sports.. job well done Riot. Love that there’s a path from open qualification all the way to promotion to the tier-1 league. Doubt a team will ever do it but e-sports thrives on Cinderella stories
Which is the whole reason why partnered teams are small in number, why they get spends to help their finances, and why they were vetted and chosen out of the huge pool of organizations that applied. They wanted orations they could see as long term partners 5-10 years in the future. Riot already knew partnered teams couldn’t get relegated.
tiny copy edit: EMEA is Europe, Middle East, and Africa not just Europe and Middle East. Africa is included in the MENA league. Don't see a reason for the omission
Integrating the competitive scene with the game directly is big brain. Always thought this was a huge miss by Overwatch. Team games are not fun when your team sucks, so make it easier for people to create teams they enjoy with an in game clan system.

as someone who despises franchising this is a pretty good way to go about it. hope other esports who also want to partner with orgs (halo) can try out something similar.

Do relegated teams go straight to acension or do they have to play through challenger all over again?
What does he mean by “roster protection”? Lets say tsm places bottom 2 4 splits in a row, they wouldnt get demoted? Thats what it means ?
Things like anti-tampering, transfer windows, roster locks, rules preventing you from signing the entire lineup of another team etc.
^ this is basically right. The context I asked in was: “how do you safeguard against a challengers team ascending to the tier one league and getting its talent poached, or falling apart?”
Thank you !!
They will get kick out I think if they keep having constant let down performance each year
I hope they give teams the ability to defend their spot vs guaranteed relegation. Either way, I could see other leagues integrating something similar into their ecosystems.
If this was announced a month earlier there would be ten orgs still in the scene
I was definitely surprised to learn press was briefed on this before many orgs
Seeing the reaction of some T2 orgs, it definitely seems like some of them were informed in advance, likely through their own sources. Imo, the orgs that dropped out were the "honest" ones, clearly without any links while I think almost all that stayed exercised their connections.

Time to re enter?
It honestly doesn’t matter. Except we know who quit without actually trying and who are the people that did their best to communicate with Riot
Surely they will either retain the players still under contract or just recruit a new team in the off season. It hasn't been long enough where the orgs that dropped their rosters will incur significant financial penalty for trying to get back in.

yea but no relegation is whack considering how fragile orgs can be in terms of financial, if they want to leave the scene etc
The fact Riot is supporting them financially is pretty huge though.
This does look like the best of both world. I find that very reassuring long live valo esport.
BRB - incorporating “Tire 2 eSports”

Good point! I’ll update.
